Chapter 79: Shall We Go? Putting Glass on the Roof
by 良桃Chapter 79: Shall We Go? Putting Glass on the Roof
"Damn it, why is it raining again?"
"Is there something wrong with this rain? Why does my arm itch so much?"
"Damn, could this be acid rain?"
...
Meng Ci had actually woken up around nine today but had stayed in bed playing games. Fortunately, his blanket was large enough that no matter how he turned, not much cold air got in.
The fly surveillance camera, which Meng Ci had placed outside last night, was already on when he heard voices outside. There were about a dozen people, three assault boats, and five rubber dinghies gathered together.
At first, they were laughing and joking, saying things like "We've been through thick and thin together; surviving this long means we're destined for good fortune." They also talked about getting together for drinks and barbecues once everything returned to normal.
But soon after the acid rain started falling, these people hurriedly paddled their rubber dinghies and drove their assault boats back into their buildings, cursing all the while.
The acid rain grew heavier, and one of the rubber dinghies fell behind. The man on it rubbed his eyes, irritated by the acid rain, and the dinghy quickly began to corrode.
"Help! Help me!"
The air in the rubber dinghy was escaping faster and faster, and the man fell into the water.
He flailed his arms in the water, but the people who had earlier talked about meeting up regularly did nothing to save him, allowing him to be swept away by the floodwaters.
Seeing everyone leave, Meng Ci rolled over, turned off the fly surveillance, put down his phone, and slept for another hour before getting up.
After washing up, Meng Ci took out a can of eight-treasure porridge and a pancake from his storage space.
He had grown tired of eating meat every day, so having some lighter food was quite nice.
After finishing his meal, Meng Ci threw the packaging into the stove to destroy any evidence.
He continued playing games.
Even inside the house, Meng Ci could hear the sound of acid rain pelting the roof.
Right!
Meng Ci suddenly remembered something, tossed his phone onto the sofa, grabbed a glass cup, and used tongs to hold the handle as he extended it outside the window.
Once the cup was half full of acid rain, Meng Ci brought it inside and placed it on the balcony floor.
Looking at the cup of acid rain, Meng Ci felt conflicted.
In the novel, the zombies and humans with special abilities in the later stages of the apocalypse mutated because of exposure to acid rain.
Meng Ci stretched his right index finger into the cup of acid rain.
"Ouch!"
Just touching the acid rain made his finger hurt intensely. If his entire body were exposed, the pain would be unbearable.
Moreover, even if he were exposed to acid rain, he didn't know whether he would turn into a zombie or gain special abilities.
After a short moment of deliberation, Meng Ci made up his mind.
With so much food in his storage space and the ability to grow crops, he could be self-sufficient, so there was no need to expose himself to acid rain.
When the zombies arrived, he would need special abilities mainly to find food and fight them.
Meng Ci thought about finding a tall building to hide in permanently, avoiding going out to search for food.
Opening the window, Meng Ci threw the glass cup and tongs into the floodwaters and continued playing games on the sofa.
An hour later, Meng Ci heard footsteps on the roof.
His alarm bells went off, but he quickly relaxed.
The alarm at the stairwell hadn't sounded, and neither Yun Jingcen nor anyone else had called him, so they must be doing something on the roof.
Still, Meng Ci put on a thick coat and decided to go out and see what was happening.
However, halfway through putting on his clothes, he heard a knock on the door. Opening it, he saw Shen Que wearing old clothes and carrying a pair of gloves.
"What's up?" Meng Ci asked.
Shen Que explained, "Professor Yun and the others are removing the glass from downstairs to lay it on the roof to reduce damage."
"I'm going to help. Are you coming?"
Meng Ci shook his head vigorously, "No."
Initially, Meng Ci had been considering whether to find an excuse to make Shen Que and Yun Jingcen get exposed to the acid rain.
If they survived until the later stages of the apocalypse and evolved special abilities, it would provide some security.
Now that they were voluntarily exposing themselves, Meng Ci didn't need to waste his brainpower on it.
Hearing this, Shen Que was surprised but still pressed, "Are you really not coming?"
"You can help lay the glass near the entrance; there's less acid rain there."
"No, I'm not going." Meng Ci found it odd that Shen Que seemed so insistent on making him go out today.
Shen Que saw that Meng Ci really wasn't going to join them. He gave Meng Ci a deep look before saying, "Alright, I'll go then."
Meng Ci thought about it and felt that since everyone was working hard to prevent the roof from being corroded, it wouldn't be right for him not to do something.
"Shen Que, tell Teacher Yun and the others that they should come here for dinner after they're done."
Shen Que turned around and said, "Okay."
Then he opened the door and walked out.
Since he was inviting them over for dinner, it wouldn't be appropriate if the meal wasn't lavish. So, he took out two fish and prepared them as boiled fish slices.
He also took out a piece of pork and made a large pot of braised pork.
He sliced some potatoes and made a dish of vinegar-fried potatoes.
He picked some vegetables from the flower pots, chopped a few sausages, and made sausage stir-fry with the vegetables.
He chose two of the largest clay pots and placed them on the stove to cook rice.
These were all things Yun Jingcen and the others knew about, so there was no fear of arousing suspicion.
He put a can of beer and five cans of cola next to the stove to warm them up.
He kept all the dishes warm on the stove and then put on his coat to head upstairs.
"Brother, you came!" Ruan Qing was coming down the stairs when he saw Meng Ci, his eyes lighting up.
He had originally wanted to pull Meng Ci but didn't extend his hand when he remembered his acid-rain-corroded hands.
"Mm, why are you moving glass up there?" Meng Ci asked curiously.
After all, given how much Yun Jingcen and the others doted on Meng Ci, they would never have let him get caught in acid rain.
Ruan Qing explained, "I insisted on going."
"More people mean more help. We can finish sooner and rest earlier."
"Oh, by the way, Brother, I heard the big guy say you're making us dinner."
Meng Ci nodded.
Ruan Qing's eyes sparkled. "Wow, Brother, you're amazing! You can even cook."
"I'm definitely going to eat three big bowls."
Saying this, Ruan Qing held up three fingers.
Meng Ci smiled lightly. "Sure, as long as you can eat it."
When Ruan Qing saw Fang Shurui and Cheng Yu carrying glass up, he quickly bid farewell to Meng Ci.
"Brother, I'm going to move glass now. See you later." Ruan Qing said, then hurriedly went downstairs.
"Okay, see you later."
"Teacher Fang, Teacher Cheng."
Meng Ci greeted the two teachers and then stepped aside to let Fang Shurui and Cheng Yu go up to the rooftop.
Without hesitation, Meng Ci followed them up to the rooftop.
