Chapter 20: Brother Jie, Blame Me If You Must
byChapter 20: Brother Jie, Blame Me If You Must
The book clearly stated that on the third day of the torrential rain, the government started sending volunteers to distribute food and water.
There were no restrictions like requiring IDs; they gave out as much food as possible, fearing any panic.
Even after half a month of rain, when most grain warehouses were flooded and roads blocked, food distribution was based on population.
Why is the food distribution four days later than described in the book? And why is it based on population from the start?
This is quite different from what the book described.
Perhaps because I came into this world, some changes occurred.
I wonder how significant these changes are and if they will prolong the apocalypse.
Meng Ci began to calculate. If the apocalypse lasts longer, the food he stored might not be enough.
So Meng Ci planned to find an opportunity to stock up more.
Entering the house, he closed the outer metal gate tightly and locked the security door.
The TV surveillance was always on, so upon his entry, he heard cheers from inside.
"Dad, Mom, we finally have food."
Li Xiaoya almost cried with excitement.
The rain had been falling for six days, and she hadn't felt full for a single day.
Thinking about having food tomorrow, Li Xiaoya ran into her locked bedroom and took out three packets of instant noodles hidden under the quilt.
"I'm never going on a diet again."
Li Xiaoya boiled water while saying this to Li Shanyang and Zhang Lu, who also brought in instant noodles.
They naturally shared the same sentiment.
Each took a bowl for soup, boiled two pots of water, and prepared the instant noodles.
Li Shanyang, with a big appetite, quickly finished a bowl of noodles and lay contentedly on the sofa.
Li Xiaoya and Zhang Lu, despite being hungry for a long time, usually ate less and couldn't finish even half of their bowls.
If it were a few days ago, they would have forced themselves to finish.
But now that the government was distributing food, they wouldn't bother.
"Dad, Mom, the announcement said food would be distributed according to population. Should we bring Liu Jie back?"
Li Xiaoya suddenly remembered Liu Jie, who had been sent to the fat guy's place for two days.
Of course, Li Xiaoya wanted to bring Liu Jie back not out of kindness but because she felt uncomfortable without a sycophant around.
Zhang Lu nodded, "Of course!"
"That fat guy has hoarded so much food; we can't let him get more."
Li Shanyang also nodded.
"Liu Jie still has some use, unlike Meng Ci, that worthless scum."
At the mention of Meng Ci, Li Shanyang gritted his teeth.
Of course, Meng Ci had heard plenty of insults from them over the past two days, so he was used to it.
Hearing Meng Ci's name, Zhang Lu also clenched her teeth in anger.
"Hmph, with how he looks, he's probably already dead from being played with."
"Good riddance; at least he won't be alive to annoy us."
Li Shanyang patted his pocket; without cigarettes, his nicotine craving was unbearable.
Meng Ci touched his heart, which throbbed painfully upon hearing those words.
"What's the pain for!" Meng Ci rubbed his chest.
"You knew what kind of person Li Shanyang is. Why should you feel hurt?"
Meng Ci remained expressionless, waiting for the pain to subside. Then, he took out a strawberry cake from his space and made a cup of green tea, sitting on the carpet to enjoy his afternoon tea.
On the surveillance, Li Xiaoya slipped out while Li Shanyang and the others were arguing.
Meng Ci guessed she was probably going to find Liu Jie.
Sure enough, half an hour later, Meng Ci saw Li Xiaoya helping Liu Jie, who looked pale, walk in.
Zhang Lu pretended to help Li Xiaoya.
Liu Jie pushed Zhang Lu's hand away and glared resentfully at her and Li Shanyang.
It's all her fault!
If not for Zhang Lu, how could he have suffered such humiliation?
What's the point of pretending now!
Zhang Lu spat on the ground.
"If it weren't for Xiaoya getting tired, do you think I'd bother helping you?"
"You're just some guy with a ruined ass, what do you have to be proud of!"
"Once this storm is over, stay away from our family."
At first, Zhang Lu agreed to let Li Xiaoya play with Liu Jie simply because of his good family background.
Now, Meng Ci might already be dead, so wouldn't his company and assets belong to them?
Zhang Lu was already fantasizing about how she would become rich once the storm ended.
Liu Jie certainly wasn't worthy of their family.
It was only her kind-hearted daughter who hoped he would leave on his own after the storm.
Otherwise, don't blame her then.
Li Xiaoya supported Liu Jie, "Mom, don't talk about Brother Jie like that."
Zhang Lu snorted coldly, "Do you really want to be with someone who sells his ass?"
"If you dare, watch me break your legs."
Li Xiaoya pursed her lips, feeling wronged, "Mom, please stop talking."
"Brother Jie, at least he fed you for several days, didn't he?"
Then Li Xiaoya helped Liu Jie into her bedroom.
Zhang Lu continued to berate her, "Our status has changed now, don't waste your thoughts on him."
"You need to learn how to act like a proper lady in high society, or you'll embarrass yourself."
But Li Xiaoya had already helped Liu Jie into her bedroom and slammed the door shut.
Zhang Lu fumed and pushed Li Shanyang.
"Aren't you going to do something about her!"
"What's the point!"
Li Shanyang yawned, adjusted his position, and went back to sleep.
Meng Ci found it laughable that these people still dared to dream of taking the Meng family's assets, not realizing if they even had a chance to inherit anything.
Meng Ci pressed the remote control, switching the surveillance to Li Xiaoya's room.
Li Xiaoya helped Liu Jie onto the bed.
"Brother Jie, my mom has a sharp tongue but a soft heart, don't take it personally!"
Liu Jie lay face down on the bed, silent.
"Brother Jie, blame me instead; I couldn't stop their behavior."
"It's not your fault!"
Liu Jie shook his head, knowing how strong-willed Li Shanyang and Zhang Lu were, while Li Xiaoya was too gentle to stand up to them.
"Brother Jie, you're so nice!" Li Xiaoya smiled in relief.
"Brother Jie, rest for a bit, I'll heat some water to clean you up."
Seeing Liu Jie's expression, it seemed he was deeply grateful to Li Xiaoya, probably considering her his white moonlight and red mole.
Li Xiaoya busied herself cleaning Liu Jie's body and applying medicine from the fat man.
After Liu Jie took off his upper clothes, bruises of various sizes covered his front and back, extending down to his waistband.
That fat man must have been brutal.
Thinking about how Meng Ci was sent to the fat man for five days, returning as skin and bones before being thrown off a building and swept away by the flood, Meng Ci felt Liu Jie deserved it.
The alarm clock rang at 5 PM, and Meng Ci stopped watching the surveillance, cooked a pot of rice, and fried two dishes, leisurely eating at the table.
At 8 PM, when the alarm rang again, the entire city plunged into darkness.
Soon, people who were already scared and hungry due to the storm began shouting and making noise, even breaking things.
Meng Ci, wearing a diving suit, silently descended the stairs.
Ele morreu cedo, pensei que tinha sido depois.
