Chapter 10: The Wind Rises, the End Comes at Last
byChapter 10: The Wind Rises, the End Comes at Last
Meng Ci thought for a moment. After all, the man had saved his life, so giving him a slight warning should be fine.
He ran over to stop him.
"Um, I heard that October is the rainy season. You might want to buy more food and stay home."
Meng Ci couldn't be too explicit but tried his best to give a hint, as a way of thanking him for saving his life earlier.
Whether he listened or not was beyond Meng Ci's control.
The only regret was that such a compatible man would now only appear in his dreams.
"Okay." The man agreed, and they said their goodbyes again.
Meng Ci carried his things up to the fifth floor, where Li Xiaoya and the others were already inside the house.
Liu Jie saw Meng Ci come in and spoke rudely.
"Why are you here so late? Making us wait so long."
"Don't you know we're hungry?"
Zhang Lu quickly came over to take the things from Meng Ci, smiling and saying, "Xiaojie, how can you talk like that?"
"Xiao Ci, don't be angry; he's just like that."
"You guys sit here nicely while Auntie makes something delicious for you."
Meng Ci didn't want to talk much with this person; it wasn't worth it.
Li Xiaoya happily pulled Meng Ci to see her bed. Meng Ci touched the mattress but didn't find any difference from what he had bought.
The only difference was that the bed was too princess-like.
Then Li Xiaoya started showing off her new dress.
"Big brother, do I look good in this?" she asked, twirling around with a happy smile on her face.
"Beautiful," Meng Ci praised sincerely.
Li Xiaoya had a classic oval face, an S-shaped figure, and fair skin. It was no wonder she could attract Liu Jie; she had the capital.
"It's just a pity that the wardrobe I liked costs over a million, and I don't have the money to buy it."
"Ordinary wardrobes aren't even worthy of holding my dresses," Li Xiaoya hinted.
Meng Ci responded half-heartedly, "It's okay."
"After tomorrow, big brother will have money, and then I'll buy one for you."
"Great, big brother is the best."
Li Xiaoya happily grabbed Meng Ci's arm, calling him "big brother" sweetly.
Meng Ci followed Li Xiaoya around the house.
A princess bed, two princess dresses with little warmth, a sofa costing over a million, and a fully equipped kitchen with expensive pots and pans.
They probably didn't have much money left, which pleased Meng Ci.
Yes, adding the food he bought, they should be able to last three days.
But unexpectedly, Zhang Lu wasted most of the materials, throwing away a significant portion.
When Meng Ci saw this, he almost laughed out loud.
Really, he wanted them to eat well for the last three days, but if they didn't want to, then so be it.
After all, the ones scavenging through garbage wouldn't be him.
At the dinner table, no one noticed that Meng Ci had blocked Li Shanyang and the others.
But then again, these people only called when they needed money.
Otherwise, they probably forgot who he was.
After dinner, Meng Ci said he would go back to school in the afternoon to get something and promised to bring lobsters later for them to eat.
After the gathering, Meng Ci would drive them back.
With delicious food, Li Xiaoya was naturally happy and nodded eagerly, even insisting on having the biggest shrimp.
Meng Ci left and went straight to the rooftop. As he entered the house, he heard sizzling sounds from next door and wondered.
Could this family be renovating?
Ignoring the neighbors, Meng Ci opened the door and lay down on the bed, setting an alarm for six o'clock.
When Meng Ci woke up, the alarm hadn't yet gone off. He moved a chair to the balcony, brewed a pot of green tea, took out a box of Spicy Prince snacks, and ate leisurely.
September 30th, Thursday.
The sun was setting, but the heat remained oppressive.
Meng Ci hadn't installed air conditioning in the house, as it would be useless in less than half a month when the power would cut off.
Besides, the space he had was temperate, and if it got too cold, he could always enter the space.
While thinking about things, Meng Ci saw a man in a black short-sleeved shirt downstairs, pushing two large suitcases.
Although the distance was considerable, Meng Ci could imagine the bulging muscles on his arms.
This man was the one who had grabbed Meng Ci that morning and saved his life.
And now he had entered the building where Meng Ci lived.
Meng Ci licked his lips. If he were to save this man when he was in dire straits, he wondered if the man would repay him with his life.
Of course, Meng Ci was just daydreaming.
After all, having a space filled with so many supplies in the apocalypse would make anyone envious.
What if the man repaid kindness with betrayal?
As Meng Ci pondered these thoughts, he suddenly heard the sound of the door next door opening.
A sudden idea struck him, and he picked up half a bag of garbage and walked towards the door.
After all, they were only separated by a wall, and the balcony of his living room was adjacent to theirs. If anything seemed off, it was best to be prepared early.
In the apocalypse, only the ruthless survive until the end.
If something felt wrong, Meng Ci wouldn't hesitate to strike first to protect himself.
Opening the door and holding the garbage, Meng Ci took a step out, and the door beside him opened again.
"It's you!" Meng Ci exclaimed in surprise.
This person was the one who had saved Meng Ci that morning.
The man held a suitcase in each hand and, after a moment of surprise, said, "Hello."
"Hello," Meng Ci replied with a smile. "I didn't expect us to be so lucky."
Then he shook the garbage in his hand and asked, "I'm going to throw this away. What about you?"
Meng Ci glanced at the two new suitcases in his hands.
The man explained, "I recently moved, and I still have some things left to pick up. I'm planning to go back for them."
"Oh."
Meng Ci nodded and threw the garbage into the trash bin in the hallway. As the man was about to enter the elevator, Meng Ci suddenly spoke up.
"If it's not too important, maybe you shouldn't go."
Seeing the man's puzzled look, Meng Ci explained, "I forgot where I saw the weather forecast earlier, but it said there would be a heavy storm in about half an hour."
"If you don't need to go out, it's better not to."
"Thank you for the warning." The man lifted the two suitcases, not taking his advice.
"I still need to go. Otherwise, I won't have anything to use tonight."
"Oh, okay."
The man entered the elevator, placed the suitcases on the ground, and put his hands in his pockets, accidentally meeting Meng Ci's gaze as he closed the door.
Meng Ci smiled at the man, and as the elevator doors closed, he shut his own door.
He then leaned against the sofa, feeling troubled.
Knowing that the neighbor was the one who had saved him, and judging from his appearance, he probably wouldn't attack him.
But if a fight did break out, Meng Ci doubted he stood a chance.
He opened his phone and scrolled through it casually.
Meng Ci saw a post from Li Xiaoya: a beautiful dress, delicious crabs, and a large hand holding hers.
The caption read: Thank you for spending the weekend with me!
Meng Ci rolled his eyes.
"Ring... ring..."
"Rumble... rumble..."
Along with the sound of the alarm clock came the rumbling of thunder. Meng Ci rushed to the window.
He watched as the sky changed color right before his eyes.
A bolt of lightning echoed in the clouds, and a fierce wind started blowing. Passersby hugged their arms and hurried along.
White clouds turned dark, lightning flashed, and dust rose.
All of this happened within just five minutes.
Meng Ci could almost hear someone cursing at the heavens.
But then the person fell silent, followed by a barrage of curses.
It seemed the heavens were displeased with being cursed, and the wind howled fiercely, sending sand and stones flying, even knocking down a small girl.
