Chapter 110: It’s Cold, Let’s Make Ice Cream
by 良桃Chapter 110: It's Cold, Let's Make Ice Cream
It was only around three o'clock, so Meng Ci wasn't in a hurry to cook.
In the post-apocalyptic world, breakfast was usually eaten around eleven or twelve, and the next meal would be around five.
Besides, they hadn't done any physical labor today, so naturally, they weren't hungry yet.
So Meng Ci entered the space first and planted the eggplant seedlings he had exchanged yesterday.
The bok choy he had previously planted was already ripe. Meng Ci found a plastic bag, picked a large bunch, and put them in the bag.
He then tidied up the ground and scattered some vegetable seeds.
In the space, Meng Ci hadn't been able to buy watermelons before, but now he could plant more to store for the extremely hot days ahead.
Thinking about chilled watermelon made him feel a wave of coolness.
So Meng Ci cleared another patch of soil and planted a packet of watermelon seeds.
After being busy for over an hour, Meng Ci finally came out of the space.
Meng Ci didn't come out empty-handed; he carried a large bag of bok choy and brought out three dishes and a soup.
Salted shrimp, beef with potatoes, spinach with vermicelli, and a pot of lotus seed soup.
These were all pre-prepared dishes that Meng Ci had ordered from the hotel, and there were still many left in the space.
Meng Ci had been thinking for a long time. Since Shen Que had told him about his rebirth and the existence of the space, Meng Ci was considering whether to tell Shen Que about his own book transmigration and the space.
But he was afraid Shen Que might not be able to handle it all at once, so he decided to take it step by step.
Therefore, these days, Meng Ci occasionally added coal to the coal bag and took out instant noodles and sausages.
The supplies seemed to never run out.
Given Shen Que's cautious nature, he might have already noticed something.
But Shen Que hadn't asked any questions.
Meng Ci wasn't worried that Shen Que would do anything harmful to him.
After all, he had grenades in the space, which had a wide range of destruction. If Shen Que showed any signs of trouble, he would just blow him up.
Meng Ci didn't believe Shen Que's speed could match the explosion of a grenade.
Picking up the walkie-talkie, Meng Ci called Shen Que over to eat.
Soon, one person and one wolf walked over.
When Shen Que saw the dishes on the table, his face showed no reaction, adhering to the principle of not asking unnecessary questions.
For Eggplant, Meng Ci gave it some rice, two sausages, a fish, and some blanched bok choy.
Meng Ci also shared some salted shrimp and beef with potatoes with Eggplant.
If others in the post-apocalyptic world saw a wolf eating so well, they would probably be envious beyond words.
The two people and the wolf ate their fill.
As night fell, Shen Que went to heat the bed, while Meng Ci stayed behind to pet Eggplant and soak his feet, waiting for Shen Que to call him over to sleep.
Regarding Meng Ci's idea of opening a door to connect the two houses, Shen Que looked at the wall and said it was a load-bearing wall, so it couldn't be demolished.
Meng Ci had to give up on that idea.
Fortunately, the two houses were close, so it was only cold for a short while each day.
With the weather getting colder and temperatures dropping to minus fifty degrees, the two of them didn't lack food or heating, so they gradually stopped going outside.
Meng Ci practiced with Shen Que for an hour every day, and the rest of the time, Shen Que trained Eggplant.
On the balcony, Meng Ci continued to freeze ice blocks relentlessly.
Without containers for the ice blocks, it didn't matter; Meng Ci simply placed the frozen ice blocks directly in the space.
When it got extremely hot, if air conditioners and other cooling devices couldn't be used, he could take out the ice blocks and place them nearby.
The female rabbit was nearing the time to give birth, so Meng Ci had to check on her several times a day.
Sometimes Eggplant would lie on the fence, drooling at the sight of the rabbits inside.
However, Meng Ci knew this guy wouldn't dare go in to eat them, so he let it be.
Now that the female rabbit was about to give birth, he was worried that Eggplant's saliva might be toxic and affect the baby rabbits.
So Meng Ci beat Eggplant every time he saw it lying on the fence, which helped break this bad habit.
In the morning, Meng Ci took out a large bag of mung beans, which had already been soaking for a few hours.
Since he had nothing else to do, Meng Ci selected a large pot, placed it on the stove, and planned to make mung bean soup.
Once the mung bean soup was cooked, he added a large handful of rock sugar and stirred until it dissolved.
Opening a disposable food box, he poured the soup in and placed it on the balcony to chill for just two minutes before quickly storing it back in the space.
If it chilled for too long, it would turn into ice lumps, making it troublesome to eat.
Stir the milk and glutinous rice flour together until smooth, then pour it into the pot where the mung bean cakes are cooking, stirring until it thickens.
Next, pour the mixture into disposable cups, place a disposable chopstick in the center of each, and leave them on the balcony to freeze for a while. Soon, a mung bean ice pop will be ready.
Boil pears, silver ear fungus, and wolfberries into pear syrup, chill it slightly, and then store it in the space.
Cut strawberries into pieces, mix them with yogurt, and blend them into a smoothie using a blender.
Arrange slices of strawberries, apples, blueberries, and other fruits around the edges of a disposable cup, then pour in the smoothie.
Place the cups on the balcony to freeze for a bit, and a strawberry yogurt ice pop will be ready.
Mangoes, peaches, blueberries, green grapes, bananas...
Meng Ci took out one-third of every fruit available in the space and painstakingly turned them into ice pops.
Fortunately, he had bought plenty of dairy products; otherwise, there might not have been enough for his indulgence.
Meng Ci remembered that the extreme heat would last for half a year, with temperatures reaching up to seventy degrees Celsius, so he was always worried about having enough ice in the space.
When busy, time seemed to fly by quickly.
During the day, Meng Ci made various fruit ice pops, and at night, he fooled around with Shen Que.
During the day, Shen Que was busy training the eggplants, but at night, he still had to join Meng Ci in his antics.
Before they knew it, the New Year arrived.
"Attention all residents, attention all residents."
"Tomorrow is the twenty-ninth day of the twelfth lunar month. The government will distribute one pound of rice, two packets of instant noodles, one pound of potatoes, and two cans of meat to each person at the trading point."
"Residents who need these items should queue at the trading point at eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
"Residents who need these items should queue at the trading point at eight o'clock tomorrow morning."
As the announcement outside faded away, Meng Ci suddenly realized that the New Year was approaching.
Today was the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, which corresponded to February thirteenth on the solar calendar.
The extreme cold began on December twenty-eighth last year and would continue until July.
Although the extreme cold had only lasted a little over a month, Meng Ci felt as if several centuries had passed.
"Should we go out tomorrow to see what we can exchange?" Shen Que asked.
Meng Ci nodded. The cold-resistant eggplant seedlings developed by the government were impressive; they bloomed within fifteen days in the space. If they could buy more, they wouldn't have to worry about running out of vegetables.
After breakfast, Shen Que continued training the eggplants.
Meanwhile, Meng Ci took out some yogurt, bananas, blueberries, raspberries, and various other fruits.
He first froze them on the balcony for a few minutes, then brought them back inside to blend them into a puree.
After letting them soften for a bit, he transferred the mixture into disposable cups, creating individual servings of ice cream.
Before storing them in the space, Meng Ci froze them on the balcony again.
This was to prevent the ice cream from melting too quickly during the extreme heat.
There’s a question: when eggplants ripen, there are definitely seeds in them. So why bother buying more seeds?
Certain fruits/vegetables when you buy seeds don’t bare seeds themselves. This is due to the fact most governments want you to buy more seeds, so they genetically alter them so they can’t. Even farmers in America have to repurchase seeds if they want to plant stuff. Idk if that’s the case with the story though.
