Chapter 43: General, It Was Him Who Hurt Me
byChapter 43: General, It Was Him Who Hurt Me
"It was him who pushed it; it has nothing to do with me!"
The man being accused started pointing fingers at someone else.
Meng Ci placed the long knife against the neck of the nearest woman.
"Dare to play tricks on us?"
"Do you want to die here too?"
As he spoke, Meng Ci's knife moved slightly.
Meng Ci was not a gentleman and had no rule about not killing women.
The woman felt the blade cut through her clothes, and the coldness of the knife against her neck.
"Yes, yes, it was him. I'm not lying this time." Tears streamed down her face as she begged for mercy.
"I was wrong. Please, spare me!"
"I don't want to die!"
"What do you have to say!" Meng Ci looked at the man with a buzz cut in the middle.
The man gave up resisting and said, "Yes, it was me who pushed the wall."
"Why did you give the rubber boat to others and not to us!"
Hearing this reason, both Meng Ci and Shen Que were puzzled.
"Those people took the rubber boat to find food and didn't share it with us. Aren't they just watching us starve to death?"
"You have a motorboat too. Why didn't you bring it out? Why not!"
Meng Ci couldn't understand their logic. He could give his things to whoever he wanted. Why should he be blamed?
"So what? So you come to bully us?"
"Why don't you go after those people instead?"
"Do you think we're easy targets?"
Meng Ci's knife had already cut the man's neck. It seemed he had been too gentle in the past, which made them think he was an easy target.
There were now four households in the building that had motorboats and rubber boats.
Why didn't they go after those households? Wasn't it because they outnumbered them!
After Zhang Mingtian and a few others brought back the rubber boat, four men went out to find food.
They then decided that living too far apart made them vulnerable to being attacked one by one.
So they all moved to the sixteenth floor.
They forced the residents of apartments 1605 and 1606 to leave and moved in themselves.
With two apartments and six bedrooms, there was enough space for over ten people.
Thus, these five men naturally dared not cause trouble for them.
As for Si Chen and his group of six tall men, they were even more intimidating.
Wei Heng, with his motorboat and diesel fuel, had joined forces with six households on the ninth floor and locked the main stairwell door, making it impossible for anyone to get in.
Therefore, they had no choice but to target Meng Ci and his group.
But they never expected to see them building a wall last night!
If the wall was completed, these two households would become impenetrable, leaving them with no way to get food.
That's why they decided to knock down the wall.
"No, no, big brother, hero, spare my life!"
"I won't dare to do it again!"
The man's legs trembled, but he didn't dare kneel, fearing the wound on his neck would deepen.
Meng Ci withdrew his knife.
"This is the last time. You'd better tell everyone else that if anyone causes trouble for us again, the floodwaters below will be their grave."
"Yes, yes, we understand!" The men hurriedly ran downstairs once they were released.
After they left, Meng Ci sighed.
"If only we hadn't given them the rubber boat. I thought we were solving a problem, but we ended up causing a bigger one."
Shen Que comforted him, "It's okay. Even if we hadn't given it to them, they would still have caused trouble."
"Now there are fewer people to worry about."
Seeing Meng Ci still frowning, Shen Que changed the subject.
"Alright, don't think about it anymore."
"After this incident, I doubt anyone will try to push the wall again."
"I'll help you move the things back. Go home and rest well after that."
Meng Ci shook his head. "No, what if they're thinking the same thing!"
"It's better for me to stay here and keep watch."
Shen Que glanced at the time; it was already three in the morning.
"Don't worry, go back. I'll stay here and keep watch."
"It's just about time for our shift change."
Meng Ci checked the time and saw that it was indeed time, so he didn't refuse.
"Then I'll let you have my lazy boy chair for the night. Remember to treat it well."
"Alright." Shen Que agreed.
Meng Ci handed the keys to both security doors to Shen Que and then went home to sleep.
The next morning, it was time for the military to distribute food again.
Meng Ci and Shen Que decided to go down together to collect some food and see if they could hear any news.
Unexpectedly, as soon as they went down, they heard a familiar voice complaining about them.
"Mister soldier, please do justice for me. Look at the wound on my neck."
"This is trying to kill me!" The woman with the cut on her neck pointed at her injury and complained.
The soldier's face remained expressionless. "If you have evidence, please preserve it. Once the heavy rain stops, report it to the police."
"There's no electricity; how can we preserve evidence? Can't you handle this now?"
"Sorry, this isn't within our jurisdiction," the soldier replied.
In recent days, many residents had come to complain to the soldiers.
However, these were minor issues, and the soldiers had no time to deal with them, so they could only ask them to preserve evidence.
The people behind him were urging him to leave quickly, or else they would delay others from getting their food.
One of his companions, upon seeing Meng Ci and Shen Que, immediately complained to the soldier.
"Mister soldier, it was these two who hurt her!"
The soldier repeated, "Please preserve your evidence. Once the heavy rain stops, contact the police."
The woman, frustrated by the soldier's repeated response, lunged at him to grab his gun.
Since he wouldn't help, she decided to find a weapon herself to take revenge.
However, due to miscalculating the distance, she lost her balance and fell into the floodwaters, quickly being swept away.
"Weiwei! Weiwei!"
The man with the woman shouted her name from the window, but there was no response.
A rescue boat sped out, presumably to save the woman.
The other residents waiting in line pushed the man aside and continued to collect their food.
After a month of heavy rain, they had become accustomed to people being swept away by the floods.
The distribution of food did not stop because of the woman falling in; the queue continued orderly.
When it was Meng Ci and Shen Que's turn, the soldier spoke up.
"Please abide by the laws and regulations. Don't take advantage of the temporary chaos caused by the heavy rain to commit crimes."
Meng Ci took three packets of instant noodles, nodded, and smiled. "Don't worry, soldier."
"I promise, if someone doesn't harm me, I won't even look at them."
"But if someone insists on causing trouble for me, I can't guarantee anything!"
"Self-defense is allowed, but it must not be excessive," the soldier said.
"No problem," Meng Ci nodded.
