Chapter 46: In the End Times, Only the Ruthless Survive
byChapter 46: In the End Times, Only the Ruthless Survive
"Spare our lives! Spare our lives! We were wrong."
The people on the two inflatable boats were beaten helplessly and quickly begged for mercy.
But Meng Ci and Shen Que both understood that if they did not kill them, the next encounter might end in their own deaths.
Meng Ci and Shen Que worked well together. As Meng Ci drove the inflatable boat close to the other one, Shen Que thrust his knife forward.
Then both inflatable boats deflated one after another. Those who tried to grab onto Meng Ci's boat were also slashed with knives.
"Help me! Help me!"
"I can't swim! I have a seventy-year-old mother at home."
...
Meng Ci and Shen Que ignored them, and soon the few people were swept away by the floodwaters.
One person clung to a piece of wood in the flood.
Meng Ci and Shen Que did not let him go either.
Driving the inflatable boat over, they injured the man, forcing him to release the wood, and then he was swept away by the flood.
"Are you hurt?" After dealing with the danger, Shen Que asked worriedly.
Meng Ci shook his head. "No, I'm fine."
After just experiencing a fierce battle, neither of them had the mood to speak further. Meng Ci silently steered the inflatable boat back.
Meng Ci got off the boat first, and Shen Que handed him the coal from the boat. Meng Ci took it and placed it on the ground.
The residents of the other buildings and this floor saw them return with only coal and no food, all expressing that they were foolish.
But none of them dared to say it out loud.
After all, they had seen the blood on their bodies and the bloodstains on the knives.
Several people were even scared enough to run away quickly.
Good grief, these two guys actually killed someone.
If they don't like the looks of us, will they kill us too?
Shen Que carried two bags of coal upstairs, while Meng Ci watched over the coal and put the inflatable boat away.
Several people eyed the rabbits in the cage hungrily, unable to resist the temptation.
"Little brother, how much is your rabbit? I'll buy one."
"I won't sell one, but you can buy a leg."
A few people chattered incessantly in his ear, and Meng Ci was getting annoyed.
Gripping the long knife tightly, he slammed it into the wall beside him, fixing it there.
"Not for sale!"
That was a concrete wall, yet he managed to embed the knife so deeply with his bare hands.
If the knife had hit any of them, it would not just be broken limbs.
All the onlookers reluctantly left, still muttering about Meng Ci being unreasonable as they walked away.
Meng Ci paid no attention to their words.
In truth, he was just putting up a strong front.
After all, it was his first time killing someone.
If not for the people watching, Meng Ci would have sat down on the ground long ago.
Now that the onlookers had left, Meng Ci sat on the ground, panting heavily, his hands shaking so much he could not even zip up the bag for the inflatable boat.
"What's wrong?" Shen Que came down at this moment and asked, concerned.
Meng Ci shook his head. "Nothing, just my hands are a bit weak."
Shen Que zipped up the bag and patted Meng Ci's head.
"This kind of thing will probably happen often in the future. You'll get used to it."
"Take your time here. I'll carry the coal upstairs."
"Okay." Meng Ci nodded.
Then he noticed Shen Que's blackened hands and realized he had touched his head with those hands, feeling incredulous.
"Shen Que, your hands!"
Shen Que looked at his hands, which were indeed very dirty, and coughed awkwardly.
"Well, later I'll boil some water for you to wash your hair."
"That's more like it." Meng Ci was satisfied, and Shen Que continued carrying the coal upstairs.
After this brief exchange, Meng Ci felt less burdened.
Although Meng Ci had previously threatened people with his knife, he had never actually harmed anyone.
Today, however, it was twelve people!
But Shen Que was right; one has to get used to such things.
The apocalypse has just begun, and if you don't adapt, only the toughest will survive later on.
Being soft-hearted then would only harm yourself.
Meng Ci reached out to pet the rabbit in its cage.
It was fluffy and truly adorable.
Fortunately, there were plenty of carrots in the space, enough to feed it.
After carrying all the coal upstairs, each person took five bags.
While waiting for Shen Que to open the door, Meng Ci indeed saw that the newly built wall had been hammered several times.
Fortunately, the wall was thick enough, so there was no real damage.
Back home, Meng Ci invited Shen Que to stay for dinner.
Since Shen Que had worked so hard this time, carrying most of the coal, Meng Ci didn't let him help.
Taking out two bags of noodles from the cabinet, Meng Ci stir-fried some shredded potatoes.
Each of them got a large bowl, and Meng Ci also brought out two cups of instant milk tea.
Just as they put down their bowls and chopsticks, the alarm outside sounded again.
Both of them grabbed their knives and went out. Through a ten-centimeter square passage left nearby, they saw Zhang Mingtian.
Zhang Mingtian waved a large plastic bag in his hand when he saw them.
"Brothers, we're back with food!" Zhang Mingtian's face was full of smiles, indicating that they had found quite a bit of food this time.
After Meng Ci opened the door and took the plastic bag from Zhang Mingtian, he expressed his gratitude.
Zhang Mingtian quickly shook his head, saying there was no need to thank him. He then mentioned that during their outing, they had found a supermarket that hadn't been completely flooded yet.
Although much of the food inside had been looted, they still managed to find quite a few edible items and invited Meng Ci and the others to join them tomorrow.
Meng Ci shook his head, "No, we have other things to look for."
"Is it coal?" Zhang Mingtian asked.
"Coal is indeed needed; otherwise, how can we cook?"
When Zhang Mingtian returned, he learned that Meng Ci and the others had brought back a boatload of coal.
Many people found this puzzling, but Zhang Mingtian believed that Meng Ci and Shen Que were not ordinary people and that they must have their reasons for doing so.
Meng Ci nodded and said, "Besides cooking, there's another important reason: the weather is getting colder."
"It's already November, and winter is truly setting in. Without finding something to keep warm, we might not survive the winter."
"If we freeze to death, all the stored food would become someone else's."
Zhang Mingtian agreed with Meng Ci and thanked him for the reminder.
Closing the security door, Shen Que asked doubtfully, "Are you sure that guy is trustworthy, given how kind you are to him?"
Meng Ci replied, "He seems pretty honest."
"Moreover, if only we bring back heating supplies, we'll become a target if it gets really cold later."
Shen Que nodded, agreeing that Meng Ci thought ahead.
Considering there was still plenty of coal, they decided to go back again tomorrow and try to finish transporting it.
