Chapter 170: Birds of a Feather

The young couple, who had another wild night until dawn, spent the day like usual—one sleeping in, the other heading to work all bright-eyed.

Qin Shuyi had mentioned last night that she wanted him to have Caesar sent back today.

She figured she'd walk the dog every night before bed to burn off some of his endless energy.

Sure enough, around noon, a servant showed up with the dog.

Clearly, they'd been told to knock on Qin Shuyi's door if Ling Jue wasn't home.

They just crashed wherever now. If it weren't a pain, he'd have knocked down the wall between their places.

The visitor was someone Qin Shuyi knew.

Back when they lived in the Qingcen Road apartment, there was this nanny who'd come by to clean and cook—an old-timer from the family estate.

When she saw Qin Shuyi, the woman broke into a huge grin.

"Miss Qin, I've brought Caesar back."

Ah, she'd always known these two would go the distance.

Sure, their personalities were total opposites, but she'd seen them together and always thought they fit.

Neither was hard to get along with. Money meant they didn't sweat the small stuff, but the real thing was how they put up with and respected each other's quirks.

    That's rare.

Even married couples have their rough patches, let alone young lovers.

But these two really made it work.

Eventually, she didn't even have to cook for them. Miss Qin could cook okay, but Master Jue got even better and actually enjoyed it.

Thinking about how he'd told her to bring the dog back "home" today, her smile got even bigger.

Back in the day, he'd just say "the estate," "XX Road," or "XX Villa"—addresses, not a real home. He didn't even have a permanent place, so calling it "home" was a big deal.

Now they really seemed like a married couple.

"Miss Qin," she said before leaving, "the stuff from the Qingcen Road apartment wasn't thrown out. It just got moved to another house."

She'd handled the cleanup back then, packed everything up, and asked Ling Jue what to do. He didn't say a word.

After he shot down "toss it," "donate it," and "recycle it," she cautiously suggested,

"These little things, like the cushions and blankets Miss Qin liked, how about we store them at the villa?"

The villa she meant was the one where Qin Shuyi had thrown Ling Jue's birthday party and built a snowman.

On the other end, Ling Jue finally spoke, all cold and indifferent: "Do whatever you want."

She got it right away—he was just waiting for an out.

    Stubborn as always.

Having worked for Qi Manjun for years, she knew Ling Jue pretty well.

She said yes right away and sent it all over.

Sure enough, Ling Jue didn't say a word.

But those things—Qin Shuyi liked them, but they weren't irreplaceable, and pretty much every house had the same stuff.

Most of it Ling Jue had bought for her, not stuff she'd brought from home.

Maybe that's why Ling Jue redecorated the apartment later without using the old stuff—just filled it up with the same vibe.

Qin Shuyi paused, then smiled. "Thanks for letting me know."

The nanny waved it off. "No biggie. Long as you two are happy, that's all that matters."

She said goodbye, and as she turned the corner, she glanced back to see Qin Shuyi still standing there with Caesar, watching her go.

    Pretty and polite.

    She smiled to herself.

    How nice.

Miss Manjun had a rough life, but her son wouldn't go down that same road.

Ling Jue probably forgot, or maybe he was too embarrassed to bring it up—when they broke up, he said he'd get rid of her stuff but just went through the motions.

Of course, when Qin Shuyi found her turtle cushions and dog cups still sitting in his other houses, his face was already toast.

Qin Shuyi stroked Princess's fur and laughed. "Don't you think your brother's got a mouth like a duck?"

Ling Jue had demoted himself from Princess's dad to just a buddy.

Princess meowed and rubbed against her hand.

Qin Shuyi scooped her up and gave her a kiss.

The afternoon went by easy. After playing with Princess and walking Caesar, Qin Shuyi checked the time—almost five.

Remembering how someone always wanted her to come to work with him but never made it because he couldn't keep his hands off her the night before, Qin Shuyi grabbed her keys.

She couldn't go to work with him, but she could pick up Ling Jiao Jiao from the office.

Just as she walked out, Ling Jue called.

"Babe, you might wanna come to the office."

In the security office at Ling Corp, a middle-aged woman was being held. She put on a brave face, yelling and demanding to be let go, but fear was all over her eyes.

The person who sent her to stir up trouble didn't warn her they'd be this hardcore.

She bluffed, "My husband's your boss's girlfriend's uncle! You better let me up to see him!"

The security guards looked at each other and blew her off like she was full of it.

Not that they didn't believe her—everyone in the building knew the future boss's lady was named Qin Shuyi.

The name checked out, but the woman had a nasty mouth and didn't seem like a good person.

    "Bring her up."

The intercom suddenly rang, with Ling Jue's voice coming through.

The security chief glanced at the sour-faced woman. "Let's go. You're gonna see who you wanna see."

    Zhang Meiyue's heart was pounding.

    ...

By the time Qin Shuyi showed up, Zhang Meiyue had already been upstairs for a while.

Everyone downstairs knew who Qin Shuyi was. Hearing her name and seeing that unforgettable face, they didn't even need to double-check before letting her up.

This gorgeous woman had to be their future boss's wife!

When Qin Shuyi stormed in, pissed off, the huge CEO's office only had Ling Jue behind his desk.

"Baby~" He walked over to her.

"Where's Zhang Meiyue?" Qin Shuyi's face was grim.

Ling Jue guided her to the sofa, pulled her onto his lap, and gently rubbed her back to calm her down. "Don't get mad. I sent her to the meeting room."

Zhang Meiyue was there for Ling Jue.

When she ran into him at the supermarket that day, he looked familiar. Back at the hospital, she spotted that handsome, charming face in a financial magazine another patient was reading.

Seeing the profile on him, she felt resentment crawling through her like ants.

Not only did Zhou Tinglan remarry someone better than Qian Shu, but even her niece had shot up in status.

Ling Jue—someone of that caliber—had been snatched up by them.

She even had the crazy thought flash through her mind: if only Zhou Tinglan never divorced Qian Shu.

But the head of the Ling Group was way out of her reach. She had complaints but no way to act on them.

Then, that day in the elevator, He Haokun gave her an out.

He eyed the fussy, sickly little boy in the hospital bed with malice and deliberately told her how powerful Ling Jue really was.

He also had her and her family pretend to be Qin Shuyi's relatives, come to the Ling Group building at closing time to cause a scene.

They'd broadcast Qin Shuyi's "ingratitude" toward her uncle to everyone, while threatening Ling Jue into helping treat their son.

He said someone like Ling Jue hated trouble more than anything and cared about his reputation and public image. Saving her son would be as easy as snapping his fingers.

If he wanted to settle this, he'd have to give in—either with money or by curing her son to make them go away.

She wouldn't have to do anything but kick up a fuss to get what she wanted.

At worst, He Haokun had even put up 200,000 yuan as a fallback for them.

He looked at their down-and-out family, gloating inside.

Tao Wangxi looked down on him as a brother, thinking he was dead weight. But didn't Qin Shuyi also have annoying relatives?

Dating a woman was one thing; dealing with her annoying relatives was a whole other thing.

The more trouble they stirred up, the sooner their relationship would fall apart.

He wanted Zhang Meiyue to make Qin Shuyi look bad.

After this, they could also cause trouble at Qian Youyou and Jiang Yuzhou's school. A daughter latching onto a rich stepdad and ditching her real dad and sick brother—that'd be juicy gossip, right?

Besides, he'd heard Qian Shu had been good to them all. That was all fodder for gossip.

Zhang Meiyue might not have been clueless about his intentions.

But the bait he was dangling was too tempting.

Not to mention the possible deals Ling Jue might offer to appease them, just pocketing He Haokun's 200,000 yuan was a win in her book.

And there was a hidden motive too.

She wanted to ruin the good luck of Zhou Tinglan's niece and Zhou Yunhe's daughter.

    The two of them clicked.

Ling Jue could have dealt with the trash himself, but knowing Qin Shuyi hated being left in the dark—and since it was about her aunt—he obediently told his baby.

Listening to Ling Jue lay out what he'd found out, and hearing Zhang Meiyue's shameless demand that Ling Jue get her son a new heart, Qin Shuyi laughed angrily.
