He knew full well that once the Mo brothers arrived, his little nephew would no longer be his alone.
Though he felt a sense of reluctance, he wouldn’t neglect the necessary courtesies.
“Greetings to all Elder Brothers.”
The Mo brothers were all older than him, so he simply followed his sister-in-law and her husband in calling them Elder Brothers.
“We’re all family here, Master He doesn’t need to be formal,” Elder Brother Mo said, before rushing over to the baby.
Although He Ziming was reluctant to hand his little nephew over to others, he understood that these men were the baby’s uncles, and it would be improper not to let them hold him.
With some reluctance, he handed the baby to Elder Brother Mo.
“Big brother, be gentle,” He Ziming couldn’t help but remind him. The Mo family men were all martial artists with great strength, and he worried they might accidentally hurt the baby.
Did he need to remind them?
Elder Brother Mo, aware of his own strength, was even more careful than He Ziming when he held the little nephew.
The other brothers, seeing Elder Brother Mo bring the baby over, crowded around quietly.
From their movements, it was clear that they were all being very gentle.
“Big brother, our little nephew is cute,” Mo Zhongyuan said softly, his tone filled with doting.
“Yes, this child is indeed handsome, far more so than Ninth Brother was at birth.”
Elder Brother Mo looked at the peacefully sleeping baby in his arms, then turned to Mo Jiuya. “Ninth Brother, Father has already given both babies their milk names.”
Mo Jiuya wasn’t particularly surprised by this. It was an age-old tradition that the elders of the family would give the formal name, and giving a milk name was even less unusual.
“Big brother, what milk names did Father give them?”
The second brother sighed.
“Sigh... I really don’t know what Father was thinking. The little niece’s milk name is ‘Mingzhu’ (Bright Pearl). It’s a lovely name, both in sound and meaning—she’s the precious pearl of the Mo Family.”
As he spoke, he gave the baby in Elder Brother Mo’s arms a sympathetic look and couldn’t help but gently touch the little hand that was sticking out.
“Such a fine child, but they had to call the boy ‘Zhuer’ (Pillar). This milk name is really too common, just like the kids from Xiling Village.”
After all, they had grown up in the Imperial City and mostly interacted with children from wealthy families. None of them had ever heard of a family giving their child such a milk name.
Fearing that Ninth Brother might feel upset, Elder Brother Mo quickly explained, “Ninth Brother, Father believes that First Treasure will be the pillar of the family in the future, which is why he chose this milk name.
“A milk name is just for the family to use. Later, you and Ninth Sister-in-law can choose a more elegant formal name.”
Mo Jiuya hadn’t really thought much about the milk name.
In his heart, he felt that it didn’t matter what the child was called, as long as they were all healthy and safe.
“If Father thinks it’s good, then it’s fine. A milk name is just for everyday use.”
The elder brothers exchanged glances upon hearing Ninth Brother’s response.
Ninth Brother was genuinely straightforward—he didn’t realize that Father might be showing favoritism towards the girl.
It's alright, the little nephew still has his uncles to dote on him.
Realizing he wasn't needed here, Mo Jiuye headed back to his room to stay by He Zhiran's side.
He Zhiran had always been a light sleeper. Just now, if not for the exhaustion from childbirth, she wouldn't have drifted off.
The moment Mo Jiuye approached the bed, she opened her eyes.
"Ran Ran, are you awake?" Mo Jiuye quickly leaned in.
He Zhiran pushed herself up with her hands, and Mo Jiuye swiftly moved to support her.
"Ran Ran, do you feel any discomfort? Are you hungry? Shall I ask Yu'er to prepare something for you?"
He Zhiran shook her head and leaned into Mo Jiuye's arm, her eyes scanning the surroundings.
"Where are the children?"
"Mother took Mingzhu to show Father, and Zhuer is in the side room with your mother," Mo Jiuye replied.
"Mingzhu, Zhuer?"
Mo Jiuye smiled. "Mingzhu and Zhuer are the milk names of our children."
He Zhiran couldn't help but chuckle. She had only been asleep for a short while, and the children’s milk names had already been decided.
"Did you come up with them?" she asked.
She was aware of the customs of the Great Shun Dynasty, where formal names were given by the elders, but milk names were usually chosen by the parents.
However, the milk names did sound quite natural, and she found nothing wrong with Zhuer’s name.
"Father chose them. He said Zhuer is the first grandson of the Mo family and will be the pillar of the family, so he gave him that milk name."
Mo Jiuye, worried that his wife might be unhappy about their son's milk name, quickly explained.
He Zhiran didn’t think there was anything wrong with her son’s milk name. When she was young, she often heard the elders say that giving a child a simple milk name would help them thrive.
Besides, Zhuer wasn’t too rough and sounded quite smooth.
Thus, she didn’t realize Mo Jiuye was trying to reassure her.
At that moment, all she wanted was to see her children. Several hours had passed since she gave birth, and the babies hadn’t eaten yet.
Thinking about the babies eating, He Zhiran felt her chest and realized she hadn’t experienced the expected engorgement.
Fortunately, she had already purchased infant formula on Taobao.
"My lord, the children must be hungry now."
Mo Jiuye looked at the sky. Indeed, it had been more than two hours since the babies were born, and they hadn’t eaten yet.
"Alright, I’ll bring them back."
Thinking that his son and daughter were still hungry, he felt a father’s urgency.
However, as soon as he opened the door, he heard faint cries from the courtyard.
It was Madam Mo carrying Mingzhu as she rushed back.
"Jiuye, has Ran Ran woken up? Mingzhu hasn’t stopped crying and is probably hungry."
Meanwhile, Mrs. He emerged from the side room carrying Zhuer.
"I think Zhuer is likely hungry as well; though he hasn’t cried, his little mouth keeps moving."
Mo Jiuye’s original plan was to carry one baby in each arm and then enter the space with his wife to feed them milk powder.
But as soon as he took Zhuer from his mother-in-law, he became nervous.
The baby was so small and soft, and he feared he might accidentally hurt the baby if he wasn’t careful.
If he had to carry Mingzhu as well, he probably wouldn’t even be able to walk.
With no other option, Mo Jiuye let his mother continue carrying Mingzhu as they returned to the room.
Coincidentally, Mrs. He also wanted to check on her daughter, so she followed them inside.
At this moment, Mingzhu was still crying incessantly, and upon seeing He Zhiran sitting up, Madam Mo quickly handed the baby to her.
"Ran Ran, Mingzhu is probably hungry. Please feed her."
In fact, a month before He Zhiran’s due date, Madam Mo had suggested hiring a wet nurse.
However, He Zhiran declined.
The reason was simple: she hoped to feed her two babies herself, and if that wasn’t possible, she could always buy infant formula from Taobao Mall.
