Chapter 7 Tempting Fate
byChapter 7 Tempting Fate
It wasn't just the inhibitor; Eugene had plenty of other "good stuff" in his possession.
The Omega Shanyan Xiangsha was one of his victims, tortured to death with these illicit substances.
Unfortunately, like Ji Jing, Shanyan Xiangsha had no background and was initially deceived by the seemingly respectable Eugene.
She thought that although he was a Beta, coming from the Grace family, marrying him would be a step up for her.
Little did she know that within half a year of their marriage, she couldn't bear Eugene's torment and chose to end her life.
Eugene, the scum that he was, managed to wriggle out of blame with various excuses. The Graces, while not fond of their Beta son, didn't want him to suffer too much.
They hired the best lawyer in Imperial Star to defend him, and he ended up serving only a year in prison, but was released after just eight months.
Those eight months were the most peaceful days Ji Jing had ever experienced in the Grace household.
After Eugene's release, his family forbade him from interacting with other Omegas, so he turned his attention to Ji Jing.
Ji Jing was of pure ancient Huaxia descent, with black hair and eyes, a slender figure, smooth fair skin, and delicate features. Even among the generally high-standard beauty of Omegas, his looks stood out.
Sadly, his parents died when he was very young, leaving him without any other family.
Under the arrangement of community workers, he was adopted by a Beta couple.
However, this couple already had their own child. They adopted Ji Jing not because they genuinely loved children, but because of his good looks and his status as an Omega.
They intended to raise him and marry him off to a wealthy family in exchange for resources.
Under the strict upbringing of his adoptive parents, Ji Jing grew up obedient and compliant.
Later, at the Royal Omega Academy, he learned how to please and serve his Alpha.
In the societal structure, weak Omegas must live under the protection of Alphas, so they should be gentle, obedient, compliant, understanding, and caring...
In essence, Ji Jing became a model Omega by societal standards.
He met Ed through matchmaking and married him after just three meetings.
There was no wedding ceremony; after obtaining the marriage certificate, Ed fulfilled his familial obligations and promptly returned to military service.
His adoptive parents severed ties with Ji Jing after receiving a substantial dowry from Ed.
Thus, Ji Jing became part of the Grace family. He worked tirelessly for them for three years, but even as a model Omega, he never gained their approval.
Now, he faced the prospect of being cast out.
However—
For the little succubus Ji Jing, none of this mattered.
He wanted to trace the source of Eugene's substances not only to gain leverage against him but also to address the root of the problem.
He couldn't prevent all Omegas from being harmed by psychopaths, but if he could save even one Omega and prevent another tragedy like Shanyan Xiangsha's, it would be worth it.
The hovercar stopped a kilometer away from the underground city. When Ji Jing got out, he had changed his appearance.
Wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, khaki cargo pants, a baseball cap, a mask, and black-rimmed glasses, he almost completely concealed his good looks.
With a slight hunch, he looked like a socially awkward shut-in.
Compared to the orderly inner city, the outer city was chaotic.
The buildings looked old, there was minimal greenery, garbage littered the streets, and the air carried a faint sour smell.
Ji Jing walked toward the entrance of the underground city, head down, passing people of all sorts—some numb, some shifty-eyed, some menacing, but mostly wary.
After a ten-minute walk, he reached the entrance, where stairs led downward, reminiscent of subway entrances on ancient Blue Star.
This underground city had a history. When humans first occupied the planet, the surface environment was unsuitable for habitation.
So the pioneers who developed the planet dug a large underground cavern as a temporary shelter. After several years of development and construction, the planet became habitable.
During those years, the underground cavern evolved into a small underground city with basic amenities, albeit with less-than-ideal conditions.
When the pioneers left, the underground city was abandoned.
As Imperial Star rapidly developed, the abandoned underground city was repurposed.
Here, illegal transactions flourished, and many undocumented immigrants from other planets mingled.
In short, the underground city was home to all kinds of people.
Due to poor ventilation, the air inside was murky. As soon as Ji Jing entered, the mixed stench overwhelmed him.
He adjusted his mask's smart filter mode, pulled down his cap, and stepped inside.
Unbeknownst to him, two men nearby, seemingly smoking and chatting, kept glancing at the entrance.
One of the taller men, upon seeing Ji Jing, narrowed his eyes, a glint of interest flashing in his gray-green eyes.
"Boss, that guy has black hair and eyes too. Do you think he might be the Gray Wolf?" the other man asked in a low voice, noticing his companion's gaze.
The tall man watched Ji Jing disappear into the dimly lit entrance, as if watching a naive lamb walking into a predator's lair.
"He's not," the tall man shook his head, leaving the rest unsaid—
That was just a curious Omega who had come to the underground city to court death.
The dimly lit underground city was still relatively orderly, with shops lining both sides of the streets and many street vendors selling all sorts of goods. Most of the vendors were cloaked in black robes, making it hard to see their faces.
The pedestrians on the streets were of various races, and there were also some non-humans wandering among them. Ji Jing saw a bird person with wings and a lizard person covered in dark green scales mingling within the crowd.
Occasionally, he would encounter a few Omegas dressed provocatively soliciting customers on the street, and not far from them stood guards.
Ji Jing did not rashly ask questions but instead walked while observing his surroundings. He avoided anyone who approached him to strike up a conversation.
But he forgot that people in the star system identified one's gender more through pheromones than appearance.
So even though Ji Jing had wrapped himself up tightly, he had already become a fat sheep targeted by others.
