Chapter 14 The Invitation
byChapter 14 The Invitation
Regardless of what his subordinates might think, since General Tang En had given the order personally, the invitation was swiftly sent to Ed's personal optical brain.
Unfortunately, Ed himself was still lying in a treatment pod at the hospital.
His severed right hand had been reattached, but there was still some lingering sadness that hadn't fully healed.
Of this, Ji Jing knew nothing.
He ventured into the underground city several more times afterward.
With the experience from the first time, his disguise skills improved significantly.
For instance, using super-strong pheromone patches to cover his gland on the back of his neck and spraying Beta-scented perfume to mask his gender.
Or, sticking on a fake beard, wearing a wig, and using a silicone patch to create a scar.
—Clearly, this was inspired by the strange man at the café.
With these disguises, Ji Jing didn’t encounter the same situation of being abducted on the street when he entered the underground city again.
Of course, it might also be because the tall man and his group had cleaned up the area last time, taking down the local thug and his hideout, so the remaining troublemakers were keeping their heads down for now.
After blending in with his disguise, Ji Jing began to gather information by talking to specific vendors and shopkeepers.
Naturally, this process involved spending money on some odd items, making him a few times over a sucker.
This further depleted his already meager balance.
Fortunately, after all his inquiries, he finally got results.
It turned out that the illegal drugs and products targeting Omegas were previously sold by the underlings of the local thug.
Now, the thug and his underlings were either arrested or fled, and the shops were closed.
So, Ji Jing finally found the source, but it was too late—the problem was solved, and his credits were spent in vain.
Sucker Ji Jing: ...
After this setback, Ji Jing temporarily lost interest in exploring the underground city and decided to wander around the inner city instead.
What he didn’t know was that his loving husband Ed, having just recovered from his injury, eagerly contacted his lover Carol and asked her to take Ji Jing’s place as his official partner to attend the social gathering.
God knows how excited Ed was upon receiving the invitation; even the lingering sadness seemed less painful.
But to ensure there was no mistake, he proactively contacted the event organizers to ask if they had sent the wrong invitation.
From the staff, Ed learned that his invitation was personally approved by General Tang En.
At that moment, Ed felt a mix of excitement, surprise, and fear.
Excitement because attending the gathering meant interacting with military bigwigs, which would greatly benefit his future development.
Surprise because he never expected to be noticed and favored by General Tang En, proving that true talent always shines through.
Fear because he had heard that General Tang En was very strict, rigorously training his subordinates, especially Alphas, to the point of breaking them. If he were truly chosen, could he endure such hellish training?
Ed never imagined that General Tang En knew him because of Ji Jing.
After the initial excitement, Ed thought about Carol. The invitation mentioned bringing a partner, so giving this opportunity to Carol would help her become familiar with the military bigwigs, ensuring a brighter future for both of them.
And Carol was indeed persuaded by Ed, despite carrying his child and still undecided about whether to keep it.
Compared to having a child, her dream was to become an Omega who could match Alphas, proving that the current military and academies rejecting Omegas were arrogant and wrong.
On the day of the gathering, Ed and Carol attended in formal attire.
Unfortunately, even the receptionists at the event had higher ranks than them, so the anticipated networking with military bigwigs didn’t happen.
The bigwigs barely acknowledged them, treating them like clowns.
However, when General Tang En arrived, he did inquire about Ed.
Soon, a waiter led Ed and Carol to General Tang En. Ed smiled humbly and almost groveled as he offered a toast.
"General, hello! Hello! I am incredibly honored to be invited by you! Here's a toast to you!"
With that, Ed downed the glass of wine, then used his eyes to urge Carol to do the same.
Carol looked uncomfortable, not daring to meet General Tang En’s eyes, and said, "General Tang En, here's to you..."
He drank half the glass.
Seeing this, Ed frowned, about to signal Carol to finish the rest, when General Tang En spoke, "You two are partners?"
Not knowing why the General asked, but remembering he brought Carol as his partner, Ed quickly nodded and smiled, "Yes, General, he is my partner."
General Tang En didn’t say anything else, sipping lightly from his glass and giving Carol a meaningful glance.
The waiter interjected, "General Tang En has to discuss matters with General Varta later. Please feel free to mingle elsewhere."
Seeing General Tang En turn away, Ed felt disappointed, thinking it must have been due to Carol’s lack of enthusiasm.
Feeling a sense of blame, he whispered, "Carol, that was General Tang En. Why were you so cold? You gave him the impression of being ungrateful. I kept signaling you to finish your drink. How can you only drink half? It’s so impolite..."
Ed rambled on, but Carol suddenly teared up, wanting to leave immediately if not for the formal setting.
"Ed, I'm pregnant," Carol whispered, taking a deep breath.
Ed was taken aback, seemingly not understanding what the problem with pregnancy was.
He knew, didn't he? Just a few days ago, he had taken Carol to the hospital for a thorough check-up.
Seeing Ed's bewildered expression, Carol felt like she was about to explode with frustration.
"Being pregnant means no alcohol. Don't you know that?"
"Huh?" Ed looked genuinely confused; he really didn't know.
"This... is this true? Then since you just had some drinks, will it..."
Ed's hesitant tone only made Carol feel even more exhausted.
Her anticipation for this child diminished further, and she couldn't help but wonder:
Is an Alpha like Ed really suitable to be the father of her child?
