Chapter 19
byChapter 19
Although the imperial capital, Beckland, possessed a highly capable security force that patrolled day and night to maintain the city's safety, robberies still couldn't be completely prevented. In this complex city, there were always some lawless individuals attempting to get rich through illicit means. For his own safety, Evan, after careful consideration, chose the public carriage of the Wellington Carriage Company.
"To Academy Street." Evan glanced at the fare chart posted on the carriage door, handed over 10 Copper Huote, and steadily took his seat in the carriage. The driver appeared to be a retired soldier, his face bearing the marks of time and a resolute expression. The driver's right hand was missing several fingers, perhaps a mark from his time on the battlefield. Yet, despite his physical disability, he handled the carriage with remarkable steadiness. His skilled movements and focused gaze made Evan feel secure.
Perhaps in any world, drivers seem to have a knack for conversation. Although it was an open carriage without a compartment to hinder communication, the coachman could still chatter away while driving. His words flowed like a river, full of life and stories.
"First time in Beckland? Haha, our Beckland is a wonderful place. Of the empire's top ten theaters, four are located in Beckland. Those theaters are magnificent and exquisitely decorated, staging various splendid plays and performances. Six of the empire's top ten five-star restaurants, as ranked by magazines, are in Beckland. These restaurants offer delicious cuisine and excellent service, a paradise for food lovers. Furthermore, the empire's top five higher education institutions are also in Beckland. It gathers the empire's finest students and scholars, a hub of knowledge. Here, even if you only have 1 Copper Huote, you can find a place to rest for the night, though the conditions might be modest, it at least provides a place to lay your head. As long as you are willing to work hard, you can get by here and pursue your dreams.
However, never go to the West District after dark. It gets somewhat chaotic there after nightfall, and public security is relatively poor. The slums are also in the West District, though on the outskirts. If you live in the slums, the rent is very low, but it also has the most thieves and robbers. Before going out during the day, it's best to carry your valuables with you, carefully protecting your property. It's advisable to return before sunset, barricade your doors and windows to increase your sense of security. At night, no matter what sounds come from outside, do not open the door to avoid danger.
Ah, you're going to Academy Street, that's in the East District. The empire's top five higher education institutions are all there. Besides that, there are many hotels, restaurants, clothing stores, and general stores of various grades. These shops cater to students from the five major institutions, who come from diverse backgrounds, meeting their various needs. Of course, it's also the area with the best public security in all of Beckland. Not only is there a security bureau, but also Night Watchers and Order Keepers. The three Orthodox Gods also have churches on Academy Street, their presence adding a touch of sanctity and solemnity. In terms of crime rate, it's arguably even lower than the Central District, making one feel safe and comfortable."
The coachman's few minutes of conversation painted a vivid picture for Evan, giving him a general understanding of Beckland. Without a detailed map or introduction to Beckland beforehand, having such a talkative coachman was undoubtedly both a comfort and a guide for a newcomer from out of town. His words were filled with love and familiarity for the city, filling Evan with anticipation for the journey ahead.
Evan suddenly began to understand the reason for Beckland's establishment of public carriages. These carriages not only provided convenient transportation but also, to some extent, ensured passenger safety. They were part of urban management and a reflection of the city's civilization.
Twenty minutes later, the carriage slowly arrived at Academy Street. After Evan explained his purpose for coming to Beckland and his budget, the carriage stopped directly in front of a small but clean and cozy-looking inn — the Violet Inn.
"Welcome." As soon as Evan stepped through the inn's door, he was greeted warmly by the middle-aged proprietress behind the reception counter. Her face beamed with a warm smile, making one feel at home. Evan immediately noticed the violets in vases on the reception counter, small tables, and elsewhere. The elegant purple flowers bloomed in the sunlight, emitting a charming fragrance. This seemed to be the origin of the inn's name.
"I'd like a single room, for ten days." Evan took out his identification. In some inns in chaotic areas, naturally, no identification was needed as long as one had money. But in Beckland, even fake identification needed to be registered because the security force conducted regular inspections. Inns that allowed guests to stay without checking identification faced hefty fines. This regulation reflected Beckland's strict requirements for public security management and also provided a safeguard for travelers' safety.
The proprietress took the identification, carefully making an entry in a handwritten register while explaining, "A single room is 10 Copper Huote per day, including one breakfast. However, you must come down to the first floor to eat. Breakfast consists only of milk, bread, jam, and apples. Although simple, these foods are nutritious and can provide guests with energy for the day. Meal time is from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.; we hope guests can dine on time. The inn is open 24 hours, but please try to be quiet when returning after 10 p.m. to avoid disturbing other guests' rest. We aim to provide a comfortable living environment for every guest."
After registering, the proprietress handed back the identification card and a key. Evan took them, seeing '302' engraved on the key. This small key would unlock a new chapter of his journey in Beckland.
Going up to the third floor, he found room 302. Using the key to open the room, Evan saw a ten-square-meter space. Although not large, it was arranged very cozily. There was a single bed with a soft mattress and clean sheets that felt comfortable. A modest-sized wardrobe could accommodate his clothes and luggage. A desk and a chair provided a place for study and work. Opening the window revealed the street opposite. Sunlight streamed in, warm and bright. Although there was no private bathroom, the room was cleaned very thoroughly, with no dust even in the corners. A vase on the desk also held a violet, its faint floral scent permeating the air, refreshing the mind. The bedding carried the scent of sunshine, as if speaking of warmth and comfort. Getting such a room at this price on Academy Street in Beckland could be considered quite a bargain.
Hanging the clothes from his suitcase in the wardrobe, Evan took his wallet and went out. He couldn't wait to explore this vibrant city.
