Mo Yunfeng glanced around and then at He Zhiran, utterly perplexed.
"Who is this?
And why are you dressed like this, Ninth Brother?"
In Mo Yunfeng's memory, Ninth Brother was someone who cherished cleanliness.
Yet, Mo Jiuya was currently clad in coarse linen, covered in dust. Furthermore, Ninth Brother had never had a maid by his side. Why would this woman be accompanying him?
"Third Brother, this is my wife, Lady He. Our Mo family has been sentenced to exile by the Emperor's decree. We are now at the upper reaches of the Salt Lake, a necessary passage on our journey to the place of exile," Mo Jiuya explained patiently.
Upon hearing this, Mo Yunfeng's eyes widened in disbelief.
All of this was too surreal for him.
When he left home, Ninth Brother was only seventeen, and Mother had urged him to marry He Zhiran soon to bring a child into the Mo family.
But Ninth Brother had repeatedly declined, citing his young age as an excuse.
Now, however, Ninth Brother claims to have already wed the daughter of the He family. What on earth is going on?
Mo Yunfeng was utterly bewildered.
Mo Jiuya, aware of the urgency and Mo Yunfeng's confusion, spoke up once more, recounting the events in detail.
After listening to Ninth Brother's account of the Mo family's affairs over the years, Mo Yunfeng fell to his knees, weeping uncontrollably.
Mo Jiuya and He Zhiran understood that it must be overwhelming for Mo Yunfeng to absorb all these truths at once. Crying was a way for him to release his emotions, so they both refrained from trying to stop him.
When Mo Yunfeng had cried himself out, he looked up at Mo Jiuya.
"Ninth Brother, Third Brother will not make a public appearance for the time being."
"Third Brother, what are your intentions?" Mo Jiuya's question was cut short by Mo Yunfeng.
"Anyway, everyone believes I'm dead, and I'm not accounted for in the Mo family's exile group. This is the perfect opportunity for me to venture out and search for any clues regarding my elder and second brothers' whereabouts."
Mo Jiuya met He Zhiran's gaze, and both of them found that Mo Yunfeng's words held merit.
Let alone the fact that, given their current status, they couldn't go out to search for Elder Brother and Second Brother, even if they managed to reach the Northwest, they would first have to register with the local authorities. Moreover, there was an imperial decree stating that exiled convicts could not step foot outside their place of exile for their entire lives without the Emperor's express permission.
Local officials would regularly inspect the homes of those in exile, and should they find any individual attempting to depart, they were bound to report such incidents to the imperial court.
This way, it would only bring unnecessary trouble to the family.
Therefore, it was best for Mo Yunfeng not to participate in the exile and instead directly set out to search for the person.
Mo Jiuya nodded. "If that's the case, I'll find an opportunity to secretly arrange a meeting between Mother and Third Sister-in-law with Third Brother, so they can have some peace of mind."
"Very well, I'll leave everything to Ninth Brother's arrangements."
Although Mo Yunfeng appeared calm on the surface, the mere mention of his mother and wife had him eagerly longing to see them.
Mo Jiuya looked up at the sky and said, "Third Brother, it's getting late. Wait here for me, and I'll go back and figure out a way to bring Mother and Third Sister-in-law over."
He Zhiran secretly took out some dried food from her space and left it for Mo Yunfeng before following Mo Jiuya back to the camp.
Mo Chuhan was an adept martial artist; he had already noticed their departure from the camp.
Knowing that Ninth Brother and his wife went out due to Third Brother's situation, he grew worried about any potential changes and waited in the direction they left, ready to assist if needed.
Upon seeing them return from afar, Mo Chuhan hurriedly went to meet them.
"Ninth Brother, Ninth Sister-in-law, where's Third Brother?"
"Eighth Elder Brother, Ran Ran and I have obtained some new information. I'll explain everything to you later. Right now, I need to take Mother and Third Sister-in-law to see Third Brother. Time is of the essence, and if necessary, you'll have to help me deal with Brother Peng here."
Although Mo Chuhan was confused by the situation, he could tell how urgently Ninth Brother needed to act.
"Alright, go ahead and take Mother and Third Sister-in-law away. I'll stay here."
The tent where Old Lady Mo and Third Sister-in-law resided was occupied by womenfolk, so it wasn't appropriate for Mo Jiuya to enter. Thus, He Zhiran took the initiative to call them.
Swiftly, she led the two, still somewhat bewildered, away from the officials' sight to join Mo Jiuya.
With time of the essence, Mo Jiuya supported the Elder Madam Mo while He Zhiran took hold of Third Sister-in-law, guiding them towards the woods.
En route, they shared the news that Mo Yunfeng was still alive and that they would soon meet him.
If not for the prior knowledge of Mo Chuhan's resurrection, both women would have found it hard to believe their ears.
Especially Third Sister-in-law, who had been incredibly envious of Eighth Sister-in-law when she saw Mo Chuhan return alive just a few days ago.
Never could she have imagined that her husband would return from the dead...
Overwhelmed with joy, Third Sister-in-law wept tears of happiness. To make sure this was not an illusion, she firmly grasped He Zhiran's arm and bombarded her with questions.
"Ninth Sister-in-law, is your Third Brother also very thin?"
"Ninth Sister-in-law, do you think your Third Brother still remembers me?"
"Ninth Sister-in-law, please help Third Sister check if my hair is a mess?"
"Ninth Sister-in-law..."
He Zhiran empathized with Third Sister-in-law's emotions, patiently answering all her inquiries.
Similarly, the elderly Lady Mo was overjoyed upon learning that her third son was still alive, tears streaming down her face in a torrent.
She softly murmured, "May Heaven bless us, allowing the Mo family's bloodline to continue... Amen... Amen..."
With two additional people in tow, Mo Jiuya couldn't employ his lightness kung fu, thus their pace was inevitably much slower.
After about half an hour, they finally spotted a towering figure standing ahead.
Mo Yunfeng strode forward as he saw them.
He knelt before the elderly Lady Mo, saying, "Yunfeng has been unfilial, causing Mother to worry."
If not for the familiar voice, the elderly Lady Mo wouldn't have recognized this bearded man with half his face obscured by hair as her third son, Mo Yunfeng.
Her hand trembled as she reached out to gently touch the disheveled hair on Mo Yunfeng's head.
"Are you really my Yunfeng?"
Mo Yunfeng brushed his scattered hair behind his ear and lifted his gaze.
"Mother, your unfilial son Yunfeng is here."
With his hair no longer obscuring his face, despite his beard, Elder Madam Mo instantly recognized her son.
"Yunfeng... It's really Yunfeng... My Yunfeng isn't dead... That's wonderful..."
Overwhelmed with emotion, Elder Madam Mo embraced Mo Yunfeng and wept bitterly.
The third sister-in-law also wanted to inquire about her husband's condition, but seeing the intimate interaction between her mother and husband, she held back and didn't rush forward immediately.
She still clung to He Zhiran's arm, tears continuously streaming down her cheeks.
After a while, Elder Madam Mo gently patted Mo Yunfeng's shoulder and helped him up.
"In all the years you've been away, Lady Feng has shed countless tears for you."
As she spoke, Elder Madam Mo had already led Mo Yunfeng to stand before Third Sister-in-law.
Third Sister-in-law's eyes were blurred with tears.
"Dearest husband, I no longer have to envy Eighth Sister-in-law... Sobs... I have a husband too... Sobs..."
Mo Yunfeng strode forward and embraced Third Sister-in-law in his arms.
"I'm sorry, Cuilian. For all these years of sorrow and distress you've endured, it was my fault."
I’m genuinely happy for them
