Chapter 91
by 常花一笑Chapter 91
Most of their time in the dorm, their interactions were pretty routine—just listening to Bai Xingshu ramble on about the day’s events now and then.
Mostly, the two would read, study, or occasionally jump on the platform for a match. There were very few moments of playful banter.
Shen Geng probably also knew that Bai Xingshu was a real heartthrob.
Sometimes, he could even feel a flicker of that attraction himself—being drawn to Bai Xingshu.
But it wasn’t deep.
So before this, Shen Geng hadn’t really felt that Bai Xingshu’s charm was anything uncontrollable.
But…
Some things could only be truly understood when you were in the middle of it—that completely uncontrollable pounding of your heart.
"Please, just spare me…" Shen Geng sighed, throwing his hands up in surrender to Bai Xingshu.
Bai Xingshu’s expression immediately turned smug, his face beaming with triumph as he grabbed Shen Geng’s arm. "Since you’ve surrendered, you’ll listen to me now! Next destination, charge!!"
Soon, the last few cases were resolved with the system’s help.
Bai Xingshu, who was quite skilled at buttering up the system, showered it with praise until it was eating it up. For a moment, it even forgot all the times it had been thrown in the penalty box, cooperating with Bai Xingshu’s requests with sudden enthusiasm.
By the time they finished, the system even seemed not ready to quit.
It had been praised by its host, after all. Heh heh heh.
After handling all the missing property cases, only a little over an hour had passed. When Wu Jigao received Bai Xingshu’s call, he initially thought they were calling for backup.
Deep down, Wu Jigao felt a little secret satisfaction.
Thinking these minor tasks were simple, huh? While such cases were indeed categorized as low-priority, they weren’t exactly easy to handle.
Wu Jigao answered the call, ready to listen to the two youngsters ask him how to handle it.
But then…
"Brother Wu, we’ve finished everything you assigned us. All the stolen goods have been recovered, and we even sent two thieves to the police station. Should we come find you now?"
Bai Xingshu’s voice came through the communicator loud and clear, but Wu Jigao felt like he couldn’t process what he was hearing.
"All… done?" Wu Jigao couldn’t believe his ears.
"That's right. You can check the case records," Bai Xingshu replied.
In truth, Wu Jigao had already started pulling up the case files before Bai Xingshu even said that.
Police work emphasized thorough documentation, so Wu Jigao reviewed the missing property cases assigned to him that day. Sure enough, every single one was marked as completed.
Clicking into each case, he found corresponding photo records—reports from the complainants, photos of the recovered items, and even proof photos. All the paperwork was there.
Wu Jigao checked the time again, confirming that he hadn’t somehow time-traveled a full day ahead. Only an hour had truly passed.
And now, it was Wu Jigao’s turn to have his world rocked.
How did this happen?
"H-hey, come here," Wu Jigao stammered, at a loss for words.
Soon, Bai Xingshu and his partner arrived to meet up with Wu Jigao.
"Brother Wu, is there anything else we can handle?" Bai Xingshu chimed in eagerly, as usual.
Wu Jigao gave them a conflicted look. This time, he didn’t hand over any more case records and said flatly, "No, the rest are beyond an auxiliary officer’s duties. You don’t have law enforcement authority."
With lost-item cases, the victims only cared about getting their stuff back—everything else was irrelevant. That’s why Wu Jigao had assigned those without hesitation.
The remaining cases, however, required real cops.
"So, what’s next?" Bai Xingshu asked.
Wu Jigao: *Good question.*
"I tracked the stalker’s location—heading there now," Wu Jigao said awkwardly.
Putting it that way made it seem like while Bai Xingshu and the others were away handling their tasks, Wu Jigao had been dealing with the stalking case—but an hour later, they had already finished everything, while he was still halfway through his first task.
But in reality...
Wu Jigao quickly added, "Along the way, I also resolved a pheromone spill, noise complaint, and drunk guy."
Getting other things done on the way showed pretty efficient work.
But next to Bai Xingshu’s pace, it seemed almost insignificant.
He’d never thought his case-handling efficiency was lacking before.
Bai Xingshu didn’t think Wu Jigao was slow—he had system hacks, so of course his situation was different from ordinary people’s.
He didn’t see it as his own ability.
But Bai Xingshu also didn’t think there was anything wrong with using cheats.
Who plays fair with criminals?
Bai Xingshu cut to the chase—after all, it was work hours. "What’s the situation with this stalker?"
From the question, Wu Jigao could tell Bai Xingshu wasn’t overthinking things after returning—his mind was solely focused on handling the case.
A no-nonsense guy.
Instantly, Wu Jigao relaxed and warmed up to him even more.
There was no need to hide this from the two, so Wu Jigao explained, "This happened around 11:45 p.m. last night. Ms. Sun was returning home from Shangcheng Mall when she felt someone following her. At XX Intersection, she spotted another shadow in the streetlight."
"She didn’t dare look back and kept walking until she reached Xinyue Community’s gate. Only after seeing the security guard did she glance back, but she didn’t see anyone."
"However, she swore she saw a figure in the tree shadows. She was too freaked out to check, so she wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination."
"No hard evidence, so she agonized all night and only reported it today after her friend encouraged her."
After briefly summarizing the complainant’s account, Wu Jigao showed them the surveillance footage he had pulled up. "While handling other tasks, I checked the surveillance for these sections. There was indeed a guy, about six feet tall, wearing a hooded sweatshirt, following Ms. Sun."
Bai Xingshu and his companion carefully examined the video.
In the footage, as Ms. Sun slowed her pace, the man also slowed down, and when she sped up, he did the same—it looked undeniably suspicious.
These actions weren’t entirely inexplicable.
But later, before Ms. Sun entered the residential area, the man hid in the shadows of the roadside trees, which was downright inexplicable.
"Based on the trajectory analysis of this person’s movements along the route, combined with his physical data, it’s highly likely to be Yu Heng from Room 203, No. 73 in Ruyi Community," Wu Jigao said before showing them Yu Heng’s basic personal information.
Being new to this world, Bai Xingshu couldn’t form any meaningful conclusions about the person based on these details.
However, after reviewing the information, Shen Geng looked puzzled. "A 32-year-old beta male, working at Junqian Manufacturing with a decent salary, no record of misconduct, and several years of stable holiday hotel registrations… Doesn’t fit the profile…"
In Shen Geng’s understanding, stalkers usually fit the profile of someone down on their luck or chronically starved for romantic attention.
But the hotel records clearly indicated he had no shortage of partners.
Most of the stays were during holidays, with just a handful on weekdays, all out of town—probably work-related.
Overall, he didn’t seem like a troublemaker in that department.
As a seasoned officer in the Shangqing district, Wu Jigao spotted the red flags right away.
"Ask yourself this."
"Why would Yu Heng, who lives in Ruyi Community, be on the road from Shangcheng Mall to Xinyue Community well past 11 at night?"
Wu Jigao brought up a map and pointed out the locations of the two residential areas.
With Shangcheng Mall as the midpoint, Ruyi Community was to the east, while Xinyue Community was southwest.
Moreover, the closest mall to Ruyi Community wasn’t even Shangcheng Mall.
After looking at the map, Bai Xingshu and Shen Geng immediately agreed with Wu Jigao’s assessment—this wasn’t normal behavior.
Soon, they reached Ruyi Community.
It was the weekend, and Yu Heng was home. When he heard the knock and opened the door to see three uniformed officers, he went rigid.
Bai Xingshu and Shen Geng shared a knowing look.
With their extensive combat experience, they both recognized that Yu Heng’s instinctive posture upon freezing was a defensive, almost aggressive stance.
Since when do regular people react like that to cops?
This made me think of real life unfortunately. With the current amount of racism and amount of officers abusing their power in the police force, it definitely does make many people defensive when dealing with them
