Lin Huaiqing: "Enough!"
If you don't erupt in silence, you perish in silence.
At this point, it was clear that if he didn't make himself the target, this whole thing would never blow over.
"Dad, Mom! Are you absolutely sure this thirty grand is for my future bride price?"
Lin's father confirmed, "That's right! It's settled! The day after tomorrow, you'll see Xinxin off to her wedding!"
"Fine! Okay, okay, okay... If that's how it is, then give the money back. I won't need it." Lin Huaiqing laughed bitterly.
Nobody there really got what Lin Huaiqing was getting at.
"What's that supposed to mean? What do you mean you won't need it? Don't you need money to get married?"
Lin Huaiqing knew exactly that what he was about to say would cause a huge scene.
But right now, he didn't give a damn. Let it all burn! Everyone goes down together!
Lin Huaiqing's thin lips parted, and the words that came out were dripping with sarcasm.
"Because... I like guys! I'm gay! Even if I get married someday, it'll be to a guy, and we'll do it abroad. What bride price do you need for marrying a guy?"
Mute the world and listen to his parents' hearts break.
Maybe the words he used were too new for his parents, because they both needed a second to process it.
Then, as if possessed, Lin's mother let out a wail and passed out from sheer shock.
His dad was no exception—the guy who'd been paralyzed for years was so mad he almost stood up.
"You... what did you say? You're lying to us, aren't you? You're making this up to stop your sister from getting married, aren't you?"
Lin's dad still held onto a tiny bit of hope.
But that last shred of hope was quickly crushed.
"Of course not. I've liked guys since I was a kid. That Fei kid, Fei Xiu—Dad, you remember him, right? He lived next door a few years ago. We were together for years. We broke up, though. If you don't believe me, call him."
Lin Huaiqing said it with total conviction.
Besides, he wasn't lying. He wasn't fooling his parents. He even had a witness.
At this point, Lin's dad had no choice but to believe him.
But he just couldn't wrap his head around the fact that the son he'd raised for over twenty years actually liked guys.
Lin Huaiqing looked calm on the outside, but his fists were clenched tight underneath.
He'd been straight for over twenty years, and coming out in front of the whole family was a huge challenge for him.
Lin's mom, whether she really fainted or was faking it, finally crawled back up off the floor.
Covered in dust, hair a mess, she was crying with snot and tears running down her face. She sat cross-legged on the floor and started wailing and carrying on.
But she didn't dare cry too loud, scared the neighbors would hear.
"Oh heavens! What did I do to deserve this! My son! The Lao family must've picked the wrong burial spot for our ancestors! How could you like guys!"
"Mom, Dad, don't take it so hard. Society's moved on—men and women are the same now." Lin Huaiqing poured more fuel on the fire, not satisfied with the chaos yet.
"How can they be the same! Can two guys get married? Can a guy give you a grandson? Are you possessed or something!"
"So what? Marrying a guy doesn't need a bride price! That way my sister doesn't have to marry that old geezer, and most importantly, I like guys. Isn't that killing two birds with one stone?"
Lin Huaiqing caused such a scene at home that it was total chaos.
After a whole morning of chaos, Lin Huaiqing's stomach started growling.
He knew he couldn't count on anyone else—his parents were too busy crying and praying to pay them any attention.
So Lin Huaiqing dragged a totally confused Lin Xinxin to a nearby town for lunch.
"Eat up! Aren't you hungry? What are you staring at me for?"
After something that big, Lin Xinxin clearly wasn't as laid-back as he was. She asked quietly, "Brother... what you said earlier—you made that up to fool Mom and Dad, right?"
"It's true! Don't you ever go online?"
Lin Huaiqing pulled out his phone—the signal was better in town—and scrolled to find photos netizens had posted of him and Qin Song on the show. He handed it to Lin Xinxin.
"See! I wasn't lying."
Lin Xinxin held the phone and stared at it for a long time, her mind going who knows where. When she handed the phone back, her face was a little red.
"Brother-in-law is pretty handsome."
She thought for a long time about what to call her brother's boyfriend, couldn't come up with anything, and just made up a word on the spot.
That accidentally made Lin Huaiqing laugh.
"So you don't have to marry that old geezer after all."
"But... what if Mom and Dad say no?" She was still a bit worried.
Lin Xinxin's worries weren't unfounded.
He could only stay here for a few days. Even if he stopped this wedding, there'd be a next time, and a next time after that.
Besides, his parents hadn't even gotten over the shock of him being gay. What if they did something even crazier once they snapped out of it?
"Xinxin, I haven't asked you yet—do you wanna come to the city with me?"
Lin Xinxin's eyes lit up. "For real?!"
"Of course! The capital is a million times better than this little county town! Tons of good food and fun stuff to do!"
He had some fame now. If he took on a few more roles, supporting his sister would be a piece of cake.
From the sparkle in Lin Xinxin's eyes, Lin Huaiqing could tell she was in.
But Lin Xinxin had her own worries.
"What about Mom and Dad..."
"They're not at the point where they need someone to look after them yet. Once we're in the city, we can keep sending them money. And if they don't give back that thirty grand, I'll pay it myself—consider it their future living expenses."
"Yeah, bro, I get it! I'll come to the city with you! I'll work too and split the load with you!"
"That's my girl!" Lin Huaiqing ruffled Lin Xinxin's hair, but noticed the girl didn't seem to like having her head touched.
She got all pouty after he did that, which was actually pretty cute.
This was his first younger sister, and he was determined to raise Lin Xinxin to be plump and healthy, just as good as any girl from the capital.
The siblings crashed at home for the night, and that evening Lin Huaiqing booked return tickets to the capital. At dawn, they grabbed their bags and IDs and got the hell out of that place.
Since it was Lin Xinxin's first flight, Lin Huaiqing made sure to get her a window seat.
Ever since boarding the plane, the girl's gaze never left the window. She was so hyped she totally forgot about her brother—she was thrilled the whole way.
Lin Huaiqing, however, had been on the go for days and had a huge blowup along the way, which wiped him out completely.
He couldn't help but sigh that youth was truly a wonderful thing.
After getting off the plane, Lin Huaiqing never expected that a busy man like Qin Song would personally come to the airport to pick him up.
As luck would have it, Lin Xinxin got to see the "brother-in-law" from the photo in person.
"Huaiqing! Over here!"
From a distance, Qin Song spotted Lin Huaiqing, who looked pretty rough, and slightly extended his arms, wanting to give him a hug.
