Chapter 14 Is the Princess Ill?
byChapter 14 Is the Princess Ill?
Hongmei stormed in from outside, visibly upset.
"What's wrong?" Xiaoyue was watching her son put something in his mouth, and her heart felt lighter. She knew her daughter was like a little fairy who could help cure Lin'er, so she trusted whatever her daughter gave to her son without any worry.
"General couldn't wait to leave," Hongmei said through gritted teeth. "Before he left, he went to Old Lady Hu's room with a large bundle. I suspect it's those clothes the steward ordered for our little princess."
"Hmph!"
A wry smile appeared on Xiaoyue's lips. Even when she was pregnant with her first child, Old Lady Hu had never been this attentive. Back then, she thought it was because Old Lady Hu knew she came from the palace and brought fine silks, so she didn't prepare much.
Now it seemed that in their eyes, she was just a vault they could exploit and a puppet to help their family gain power and wealth.
"Princess, I'll send someone to keep an eye on things," Nanny Jin said before turning to leave.
Xiaoyue nodded, trusting Nanny Jin's abilities.
In recent days, Nanny Jin had quietly placed many people throughout the General's residence.
It wasn't until late at night that someone reported back.
"Good!" Nanny Jin dismissed the person and turned around.
Xiaoyue had just woken up to feed baby Ruo Xi. Nanny Jin entered the room and said, "Princess, it's a girl. The Prince Consort stayed in the courtyard the whole time until the birth."
"I see," Xiaoyue nodded.
Baby Ruo Xi was feeding, thinking nothing of that scoundrel father.
Compared to poisoning his own son, having a mistress and a daughter outside was insignificant.
"Just have to be wary of him plotting against Great Wei. Sigh, what does my uncle look like? I wonder if he's fierce. They say he's a tyrant who rose to power on the blood of his father and brothers. If he's reckless, we're doomed!"
"The Prince Consort is outrageous. He didn't even act like this when the princess gave birth to the little prince, let alone the little princess," Dong Ju said angrily, stomping her foot.
"Dong Ju!" Nanny Jin softly reprimanded.
"It's true. He doesn't seem to care about me or the children," Xiaoyao said with a bitter smile.
From the beginning, he only cared about his own power and status, taking advantage of the Empress's favor and her brother's trust. Now, he holds the military power.
As for money, there's no need to mention it.
"Since the child is born, I doubt the Prince Consort can hide it forever. I imagine he will take some action," Nanny Jin said as she helped the princess hold the little princess and pat her back.
"Burp~" Baby Ruo Xi let out a loud burp, rubbing her mouth with her tiny hand. She thought, "Sigh, such a scoundrel. Since he treats us like this, there's no need to give him any respect. My mother is a strong woman; let's fight back and get rid of them!"
Xiaoyao, while adjusting her clothes, heard her daughter's thoughts and her lips curved slightly.
Where did that mischievous little girl go, the one her brother used to pat on the head and call naughty?
When it comes to palace intrigues, does she not know how to handle them?
Even a stick leaning against a door for three years would gain some spirit, let alone a living person in the cutthroat imperial harem.
"Dong Ju, go to the front yard and tell them I'm ill!" Xiaoyao looked at Dong Ju and said.
Nanny Jin paused, then gently patted the little princess in her arms and said, "Dong Ju, go crying!"
"Yes!" Dong Ju, a quick-witted maid, pinched her arm and cried out, then rushed out, "Waaah... Someone, come quickly!"
Dong Ju's cries alerted all the servants in both the front and back yards.
Old Lady Hu sighed, "Sigh, next time, try harder to have a boy. If possible, have two more. Our Shangguan family needs some excitement!"
"But if they find out at Mozhu Garden, it won't be good!" Steward Lai Fu whispered.
"They must be feeling quite neglected being outside. Once the month is over, I'll claim her as my distant niece and raise her under my care. This child will bear the Shangguan name!" Old Lady Hu said.
"Yes, that's a good idea! In a few days, Lai Fu, you'll change their household registration!" Lai Fu immediately stepped forward to massage Old Lady Hu's legs.
Just as Old Lady Hu was enjoying herself, a loud cry startled her almost off the couch.
"Old Lady, it's terrible!" Dong Ju ran in, crying. "Our princess, she, she vomited!"
"The princess vomited? Did she eat anything unusual tonight?" Old Lady Hu asked, trying to calm herself.
"She didn't eat anything special tonight. The general was there, eating together. There was a mushroom soup. Maybe the mushrooms were poisonous. Those vendors pick them from the mountains. Perhaps the kitchen didn't notice when buying them!" Dong Ju's eyes darted, concocting a story.
"What? How can this be?" Old Lady Hu stood up. "Lai Fu, hurry, get the carriage ready and check on Hong'er, uh..."
She paused mid-sentence, suddenly realizing something and stared at Dong Ju.
"Dong Ju, you said the princess vomited? Was it because of the mushroom soup or something else?" Lai Fu asked.
"She just vomited, she's sick and uncomfortable. Where's the general? I didn't see him in the study just now!" Dong Ju stomped her foot.
"The general... he's busy with official duties!" Old Lady Hu suddenly changed her tone and scolded Dong Ju. "The general works hard for Great Wei, often staying out late. When the princess is ill, you should find a doctor, not the general. What can he do? He can't treat illnesses!"
"Alright, I'll go find a doctor. If the doctor talks, and word gets out that the princess is ill but the general didn't return all night, the emperor and empress dowager might blame you, Old Lady!" Dong Ju said, turning to run out the gate.
"Come back, come back quickly!" Old Lady Hu panicked. This girl was unpredictable. Ever since Xiaoyao gave birth, everything had changed. Not only was Xiaoyao uncontrollable, but the maids were also acting up.
But Old Lady Hu couldn't deal with Dong Ju, so she turned to Lai Fu and said, "What are you waiting for? Go stop her and inform the general!"
