Chapter 254: Go and Continue Your Studies

"An'an, Aunt asked me to come and help you," Ren San squeezed through the crowd.

Su An quickly handed the bags of detachable collars and nylon socks to Ren San.

"You handle these bags; there are samples outside. Help the customers with whatever they like."

    "Alright."

"Folks, come over here for nylon socks and detachable collars! They're the hottest styles from the south—affordable and high-quality, just like what movie stars wear. Guaranteed to make you the envy of your friends and family!"

Ren San stood in front of the stall and immediately started calling out.

"Limited stock available, so once they're gone, they're gone. If you like them, buy quickly—you won’t be overcharged."

Curious customers, drawn by Ren San's calls, crowded over, immediately reducing the pressure on Su An's side.

People are naturally curious. Seeing Su An's stall surrounded by people, everyone instinctively crowded in to see what the fuss was about.

Soon, Su An's stall was packed with people.

By the time Wang Xiaocui had sold out her goods, the crowd around Su An's stall hadn't diminished. So Wang Xiaocui packed up her things, pushed the cart next to Su An, and squeezed in to help.

Ren San picked up quickly. Managing the two bags no longer required Su An's help. He skillfully pitched, helping customers pick out items, packing bags, then handing them to Su An to handle the money.

Wang Xiaocui could only help pack things under Su An's instructions.

The three of them worked until eight in the evening. By that time, most of the goods were cleared, and Su An called for the stall to be packed up.

Wang Xiaocui, seeing there were still scattered goods on the cart and the occasional customer, was hesitant to call it a day.

Every sale meant more money in their pockets.

Su An, while packing up, said, "I'm famished."

    Wang Xiaocui's hesitation immediately vanished.

"Oh, hurry back! Money isn't everything. Look at me—I was so busy I forgot I was hungry. We haven’t even eaten dinner yet!"

The three of them packed up and headed back. Wang Xiaocui pulled the cart, Ren San hauled it from behind, and Su An pedaled the tricycle home first to whip up a quick bowl of noodles.

Just as they got home, they bumped into Su Ping.

Hearing that Ren San and his mother were behind, Su Ping went to fetch his mother on his bicycle, letting Wang Xiaocui take Ren San home first while he slowly hauled the cart home.

Everyone was exhausted today. Su An whipped up a quick bowl of noodles. After eating, they washed up and went straight to bed.

The next morning, Su An went to the bank to deposit all the money she had collected. She only rode the tricycle to find Wang Xiaocui at noon.

The goods sold more smoothly than expected—not even taking a week, just five days.

Su An calculated. After expenses, she netted thirty-one thousand seven hundred.

That night, Su An instructed Wang Xiaocui to close the stall early.

Su Ping could take two days off each month, and he hadn’t taken any in February. After talking to Cheng Kang, he took a day off.

The family bought plenty of ingredients, planning to have a nice get-together and celebrate.

In less than five months, Wang Xiaocui had transformed dramatically. Reunited with her biological children, along with medical care and good meals, she quickly filled out.

She no longer looked as gaunt and skeletal as before.

"Pingping, today you're in charge of cooking. Let’s taste what our future master chef can do!" Wang Xiaocui teased her son, who was rubbing his hands in anticipation, while chopping bones with a knife.

Su Ping didn’t pick up on the teasing tone in Wang Xiaocui’s voice and nodded earnestly, "Alright, I’ve been watching for so long, I think I can do it!"

"Mom, just help me wash the veggies. I’ll handle the cutting—I’ve got knife skills now!"

Hearing her eldest son’s deep, resonant reply, Wang Xiaocui’s face lit up with maternal pride.

She handed the knife to Su Ping, "Alright, you’ve got knife skills? Show me what you’ve got!"

In the living room, Su An listened to Wang Xiaocui and her brother chatting in the kitchen, a smile tugging at her lips.

Ren San, his eyes twinkling, said, "Sister An, I’ll go check if they need help."

Su An stopped Ren San, "Don’t go. You’ve been working hard—take a break. I’ve got something to talk to you about."

Ren San sat back down, "Sister An?"

Su An said, "We made a good profit from this batch. Thanks for running around with me—it was pretty nerve-wracking."

Ren San smiled, "It’s my duty. Didn’t you say we’re family the other day?"

    Su An nodded, "Exactly."

"You’re still young. Have you thought about going to school?"

Ren San’s eyes lit up, but then he shook his head, "No."

"I’m already thirteen, almost fourteen. Sitting with those little kids just feels awkward."

"Besides, I can study at home. I learn faster than at school—they take four months to teach two books, but I can finish two in a month."

"If I don’t get something, I can ask you and brother. I’ve already finished the books from the Zhao family. Sister An, if it’s not too much trouble, could you help me find the next three volumes?"

Su An worried Ren San didn’t grasp the importance of continuing his studies, so she explained it carefully, but Ren San still shook his head.

"Sister An, I really don’t want to go."

Su An looked at Ren San, "Do you really not want to go, or is there something else bothering you?"

Ren San smiled, lowering his eyes to hide the shadow in them, "What concerns? I just don’t want to sit in class with those little kids."

Seeing his determination, Su An didn’t push further.

"Alright, as long as you know what you’re doing. If you think you’re too old, later I’ll get you all the books up to junior high. With your smarts, the elementary books shouldn’t be a problem."

"If there’s anything you don’t get, just ask me. Once you finish the elementary books, you can move on to junior high."

"After this trip, I’ll set aside some money for you. You’re still too young, so I’ll open a savings account in my name for now. You can use it...."

Su An hadn't finished speaking when Ren San looked up. "Sister An, do you have to draw such a clear line with me? Didn't you say you treat me like a brother?"

    "No, it's not that..."

"Sister An," Ren San interrupted Su An.

"I get what you're saying. You're worried I might feel insecure and want to give me some security. I understand."

Ren San smiled. "I'm still young, and besides, aren't we supposed to be one family? I live here too, eating and sleeping under the same roof."

Su An paused for a moment. "Alright, I'll hold onto it for now. If you need money or want to buy something, just let me know."

As Su An walked into the room, Ren San watched her back and let out a sigh of relief.

He was a coward. Despite the family treating him well, he was still scared—scared of being abandoned.

Finally, he had clawed his way out of the dark muck and into the sunlight...

And then there was the secret buried deep in his heart.
