    Chapter 546: The Makeup Mishap

Su An reluctantly sat on the stool as instructed by Zuo Zuying, who then proceeded to meticulously lay out the items.

The first step was eyebrow grooming, something he was good at. "Hold still," he said.

"Here, take this mirror. Check out how they look now, and we’ll compare it later," Zuo Zuying handed Su An a large plastic-framed round mirror.

With a few swift strokes of the eyebrow razor, two clean brows emerged. Zuo Zuying passed the mirror to Su An.

    "See? Way better, right?"

Su An held up the plastic mirror and examined her face. "Huh, it really does. It feels completely different."

Zuo Zuying took the mirror from her and placed it on the table. "Hold up, I’ve got more tricks."

He slapped on white foundation—ugh, this stuff’s too dry and hard to blend.

Wait, should’ve washed her face first and applied some moisturizer.

    Do-over!

Moisturizer on the face, then foundation. This time it blended, though patchy. More patting and blending.

Su An kept her eyes closed, feeling her face getting manhandled.

Finally, the foundation was on. Zuo Zuying examined it—she looked ghostly.

Su An, eyes still closed, asked, "Is it done?"

Zuo Zuying quickly grabbed the blush and swept it across her cheeks to balance the whiteness. This old-school makeup was trash, nothing like the BB creams of the future that glided on like toothpaste with just a dab. This crap just clumped.

No highlighter? Seriously? He glanced at the eyebrow pencil on the table—maybe if he applied it lightly and blended it, it would work like one?

After some more fumbling, Zuo Zuying was breaking a sweat. Was it his technique or Su An’s face?

Why was the lipstick so red? And her face was corpse-white.

He’d totally followed the steps from those short videos he’d seen—how’d it go this wrong?

"How’s it going? Done yet?" Su An opened her eyes.

"Whoa, eyeshadow’s next! Keep your eyes closed," Zuo Zuying hurriedly said.

"Give me the mirror. I want to see," Su An reached out.

"Chill, it’s a process! Wait till it’s all done."

Su An closed her eyes again, soon feeling Zuo Zuying brushing something onto her eyelids.

Zuo Zuying stared at her upturned face, sweating bullets now. He glanced at the tools—this dollar-store makeup’s sabotaging me!

Su An, sensing he’d stopped, asked, "Is it done?"

Zuo Zuying hesitated. "Uh, I didn’t quite get it right this time. Maybe we should wash it off and start over?"

That tone said it all. She immediately opened her eyes.

"What’s wrong? What did you do to me? Give me the mirror—I want to see."

Zuo Zuying grabbed the mirror and hid it behind his back, "Don't look, just wash your face. I promise it'll be fine next time. This was just an accident; I wasn't at my best."

Su An tried to snatch the mirror from behind him, "What do you mean 'not at your best'? Give me the mirror!"

    "No."

    "Give it to me now!"

    "No way!"

"An An, let's agree first—you can't get mad."

Su An had a bad feeling. "Fine, I won't get mad. Even the best horse stumbles sometimes."

"Really, no anger?" Zuo Zuying hesitated.

Su An looked sincere. "Relax, since when do I lie? If I say I won't get mad, I won't!"

Without waiting for Zuo Zuying to react, she darted around and grabbed the mirror from his hands.

Zuo Zuying prepared to bolt like his life depended on it, but the expected scream never came.

Su An stared at her reflection in the mirror, stunned.

Her face was chalk-white like a corpse, with flaming red splotches on her cheeks. Black lines were smeared over the white foundation on her nose and the sides of her face—likely meant to be blended but just smeared, leaving dark, dirty streaks. Her lips were blood-red, like she'd been chewing on bloody meat, and her eyelids were a clownish mess of greens and reds. Her eyebrows were the only passable feature...

This was horrifying. Was this her?

She looked like a ghost from a horror movie—no, even movie ghosts look prettier.

Su An slowly turned to Zuo Zuying. "This is what you meant by making me look like the beautiful Gong Xue?"

"You said you could make me pretty! You were so confident! Is this your idea of beauty? Do I look stunning to you now?"

Zuo Zuying, guilt-ridden, avoided her gaze. "Listen, it was an accident. I didn't have my groove earlier. If we try again, I promise—"

    "I'LL KILL YOU!!!!!"

    "AHHHHHHH~"

"I told you it was an accident! Calm down, I can fix this!"

"I don't believe a word you say. DIE!!!"

Su An grabbed a lipstick from the table, lunged at Zuo Zuying, pinned him down, and started drawing curses on his face.

Zuo Zuying whipped his head side to side, trying to dodge the lipstick, while gripping Su An's wrists. "Su An, are you insane?! If you keep this up, I'll fight back! Don't think I can't fight you!!!"

Furious, Su An saw Zuo Zuying holding her arms and sank her teeth into his arm.

    "AAAAAAHHHH~"

Zuo Zuying's screams were so loud that people on the street craned their necks toward the second-floor window in alarm.

The worried landlady fretted, "Are they fighting? Those screams... Is something wrong?"

She hurried out of her shop and shouted up the stairs, "Xiao Su, Xiao Su, are you okay?"

The only response was Zuo Zuying’s howl of pain.

"Su An, what are you, a dog? Let go already!"

"Ahhh! It hurts, it hurts! My bad, okay? I said I'm sorry!"

The landlady sighed in relief and said to the onlookers, "It's fine, they're just messing around."

Upstairs, after going at it, Zuo Zuying and Su An finally separated.

Su An sat on the floor, leaning against the wall, panting heavily. Her smudged zombie makeup couldn't hide the death glare she shot at Zuo Zuying.

Zuo Zuying sat on the floor, leaning against the door, half his face smeared red with lipstick. One hand clutched his chest as he looked pitifully at Su An, embodying utter helplessness. He even got lipstick in his eye, making it tear up.

"Su An, you... you went too far."

Su An was stunned when she saw Zuo Zuying wipe away tears.

    He was crying.

She had bitten him until he cried.

    All her anger instantly disappeared.

"You... fighting is one thing, but you're a big guy. Why are you crying?" Su An's tone was full of guilt. "Does it hurt that bad?"

Zuo Zuying kept his head down, refusing to respond or look at her.

Su An moved closer. "Here, let me see. Is it that bad?"

When Zuo Zuying saw Su An's face approaching, he frowned, squeezed his eyes tight, and turned away. "Can you just stay away from me?"

Su An grew uneasy. "I swear, I didn't mean to—"

Before she could finish, Zuo Zuying opened his eyes briefly, then shut them again, his voice trembling. "Oh my God, you look so scary right now. Get away from me!"
