    Chapter 573: Got Any Proof?

"You said you saw Su Jianjun sneaking into Gao Shuibing's house?"

    "Yes."

    "When was this?"

"On the morning of October 21st."

"Why were you near Gao Shuibing's house? What were you doing there? How do you know Su Jianjun? What’s your relationship with him?" The cop glared at Ren Shan.

Ren Shan remained calm. "He’s my aunt’s ex-husband. Recently, he’s been harassing my aunt and my brother, even pushing my grandmother, who’s still in the hospital. Our whole family can’t stand him. If we had time, we’d have gone after him already. Last time I saw him on the street, I followed him to see what he was up to."

"I tailed him into Eighth Alley and saw him enter through the back door of that house, then sneak out again. Today, when I was nearby and heard about the murder, I remembered this and came to report it."

By the time Ren Shan walked out, the cops were already moving.

Su Jianjun was arrested at the People’s Insurance Company. He never thought anyone saw him entering and leaving Gao Shuibing’s house. Though he tried to stay composed, he slipped up.

After they grilled him, he admitted to pouring rat poison into Gao Shuibing’s rice jar.

Su Jianjun got charged with murder.

Though the family tried to keep it from Su An, Su Ping, feeling guilty and worried sick about their grandma, accidentally let it slip during a phone call.

Su An took off right away and boarded a train back to City A.

Zuo Zuying, using the excuse of returning to hand over business to Brother Bao, tied up loose ends in Dongguan and followed Su An onto the train to City A.

By the time they returned, Ren Shan had been summoned again by the police.

She was clearly mixed up in it, and she made no effort to hide it. She had anticipated the police would question her again—it would’ve been strange if they hadn’t.

The same young cop from last time was there.

"Miss Ren, Su Jianjun admitted to putting the rat poison in the rice jar. He claimed he went to see Su Ping earlier but was knocked unconscious. When he woke up, he somehow found himself under the bed in Gao Shuibing’s house. He figures Gao Shuibing dragged him there."

"But when we questioned Gao Shuibing, he had no idea Su Jianjun had ever been in his house."

Ren Shan nodded. "I know what you’re asking. Su Jianjun did go to see my brother. It was dark, and my brother thought he was an intruder, so he punched him and knocked him out. If you’ve investigated, you’d know my brother’s naïve and scares easy. That incident scared him badly. Later, he took me back to check on Su Jianjun. We saw he was just unconscious, so we hauled him to West City and dumped him there."

"The next day, he turned up on Fuqing Street, and then my grandmother got hurt."

The officer pressed further. "Why did you take him to West City?"

Ren Shan didn’t falter. "He’s still Su Ping’s father—we couldn’t just abandon him. Besides, he lives in West City. You accusing me of something? I’m sure you’ve already questioned Su Ping. He’s gullible—wouldn’t lie."

Seeing Ren Shan unshaken, the officer slid an insurance policy across the table. "What about this?"

"Gao Shuibing confessed that he and Ji Qingqing only plotted against Su Jianjun after seeing this. Ji Qingqing had already bought insurance for Su Jianjun. They were plotting, and Su Jianjun saw right through them. When Ji Qingqing suggested buying insurance, it was just what he wanted."

"Though they had conflicts, it wasn’t to the point of life and death. Su Jianjun said it was this insurance policy that drove him to sneak back into Gao Shuibing’s house. He dug out the rice from the bottom, poisoned the water, then started a fight with Ji Qingqing, beat her, and threw her out. He knew Gao Shuibing and Ji Qingqing were also looking for a chance to strike."

Ren Shan tilted her head in feigned confusion. "Officer, what exactly are you asking?"

The officer sped up. "You’re the one who delivered this insurance policy to Gao Shuibing, aren’t you? You also made suggestive remarks to him. You set all this up because Su Jianjun had been harassing Wang Xiaocui and Su Ping, and even pushed Li Yulan down."

"And before that, after Su Jianjun was knocked out, he ended up under the bed in Gao Shuibing’s house—you might’ve pulled that too, huh?"

Ren Shan showed no emotional reaction. She gave an approving look at Chen Hua, who was staring intently at her. "Yes, I gave the insurance policy to Gao Shuibing, and I also told my brother to leave Su Jianjun in West City. As for how he ended up in Gao Shuibing's house, I have no idea. I assume you've already investigated—we left him there and walked away. My brother and I even had sodas at a shop near East City Gate afterward. We had an alibi."

Officer Chen's breathing quickened. "So you admit it? You deliberately gave the insurance policy to Gao Shuibing? And the conflicts between Su Jianjun, Ji Qingqing, and Gao Shuibing—you were pulling the strings?"

Ren Shan put on an innocent face. "Officer Chen, you suspect I was behind Su Jianjun's poisoning case, but I’m not even seventeen yet. How could a young girl like me have such capabilities? And even if I did do it, what law did I break? Was it illegal for me to take Su Jianjun back to West City, or to show Gao Shuibing the insurance policy?"

"Besides, even if I did break the law, Officer Chen, do you have any evidence?"

Officer Chen fell silent under Ren Shan's questioning. Everything was based on his deductions. Even if his reasoning was correct—that Ren Shan had manipulated everything from behind—he had no way to hold her accountable.

Staring at the young girl before him, her eyes shimmering with apparent innocence and her face still bearing youthful features, even Officer Chen—renowned as A City’s most astute investigator—felt a sense of helplessness.

When Ren Shan came out of the police station, Su An, Zuo Zuying, and Su Ping were anxiously waiting at the entrance.

"Shan Shan, you're out! Are you all right? Did they bully you? Did they yell at you? Don't worry, don't worry," Su Ping rushed over, grabbing Ren Shan’s hands, his face full of urgency.

"Shan Shan~" Su An’s worry was also clear.

Zuo Zuying’s arm rested lightly on Su An’s shoulder. "I told you she’d be fine. No need to worry—see, she’s out now, isn’t she?"

Ren Shan smiled at Su An, then glanced at Zuo Zuying’s arm. He instinctively lowered it.

"Sister An, why did you come back?"

Su An hesitated, mindful of their location outside the police station, and pulled Ren Shan away. "If Brother hadn’t let it slip during the phone call, how long were you planning to keep this from me?"

"You foolish child. Come on, let’s go home and talk."
