Chapter 505: Day 33 in the Alien War Novel

An Yi was sitting at his desk reading when he heard the noise. He looked up.

His eyes crinkled when he saw An Cheng.

"What are you doing up here?" An Yi asked, closing his book.

"Brought you something." An Cheng placed the cake box on An Yi's desk. "I made it myself. You'll probably like this flavor."

He added, "It's light, not too sweet."

As he spoke, he reached out and straightened An Yi's collar, casual as anything—it was slightly crooked, probably from him hunched over his book.

His fingers were long and slim, and his touch was gentle. His fingertips grazed the skin of An Yi's neck. An Yi didn't pull away. Instead, he tilted his head up a little, eyes half-lidded, making it easier for him.

Then An Cheng did something that made the whole dorm go dead silent.

He gently wiped the corner of An Yi's eye with the pad of his thumb. It was a tender move—his thumb brushed the corner of An Yi's eye twice before he pulled away.

An Yi smiled, easy and relaxed, like he was used to this kind of closeness.

Then An Cheng took An Yi's hand, brought it to his lips, and pressed his nose lightly against the back of it. Affectionate.

"Don't read too long," he said, voice low and soft. "It's bad for your eyes."

Chen Heguang's jaw dropped. This... was this okay?

Shi Luo's hand froze halfway to his glasses.

Zhang Yuankai almost dropped the cup in his hand.

Do brothers... really act like that?

Wiping the corner of someone's eye with your thumb? Pressing your nose against their hand? That kind of look? That kind of tone?

The room went dead silent for at least five seconds.

Then An Yi laughed, pulling his hand back like it was no big deal. "Got it."

After An Cheng left, the dorm went quiet—the weird kind of quiet.

The three of them just stared at each other, nobody daring to speak first.

Finally, Chen Heguang broke the silence, voice dry: "So... An Yi, you and your brother... you two are pretty close, huh?"

He wanted to slap himself the second it came out—what a stupid thing to say.

One look and it was obvious they were crazy close! So close... it was way beyond normal brother stuff.

An Yi turned and looked at his three roommates, all wearing the same look—hesitant, shocked, curious, but too scared to ask. A smile tugged at his lips.

"Ask whatever you want," he said, spinning his chair around to face them, looking totally relaxed.

Chen Heguang swallowed, looked at Shi Luo, then at Zhang Yuankai, and finally worked up the nerve: "So... An Yi, you and your brother..."

He froze, not knowing how to finish: "No no no! Nothing!"

He waved his hands quickly, forcing an awkward smile: "I was just... talking out of my ass!"

"Really?" An Yi asked, his tone calm, but there was a glint of amusement in his eyes.

"Uh..." Shi Luo chimed in, his voice lower and slower than usual: "Nothing, nothing. Just that you two are really close."

He pushed up his glasses afterward, trying to hide how uncomfortable he was.

An Yi looked at him for a few seconds, then nodded. "Mm."

He paused, then said, "He's my boyfriend."

    Chen Heguang: "...!!!"

    Shi Luo: "...!!!"

    Zhang Yuankai: "...!!!"

Chen Heguang's mouth dropped into an O, his eyes bugging out.

Shi Luo's glasses slid down to the tip of his nose. He went to push them up on reflex, but his hand froze halfway there.

Zhang Yuankai's cup actually hit the floor this time—bang—glass shattered, water went everywhere.

But nobody even looked at the cup.

All three of them just stared at An Yi, faces full of shock and confusion.

Holy shit, is this for real?

    Did I hear that right?

What the hell is happening to this world?

    The room went silent again.

It took a while before Chen Heguang found his voice, asking hoarsely: "So... it's not brotherly love like I thought, but... incest... incest..."

He kept stammering "incest" but couldn't get the word out. The word was too heavy, too shocking—he didn't dare say it out loud.

An Yi laughed again, this time out loud, eyes crinkling into crescents, the corners of his mouth lifting even more. He looked completely relaxed and happy.

"We're not blood-related," he said casually.

He paused, looking at the three shocked faces, and went on: "An Cheng and I were both adopted by my mom."

That made the frozen air start moving again.

Chen Heguang let out a long sigh of relief, patting his chest like he'd just dodged a bullet: "You scared me... I thought..."

He trailed off, too embarrassed to finish.

"Thought we were biological brothers?" An Yi finished for him, shaking his head. "No. Mom adopted me when I was six, and An Cheng when he was eight. We're not blood-related."

Shi Luo pushed up his glasses, his face back to calm, but there was still a hint of shock in his eyes: "Well... that's a little better."

Still weird... but at least better than actual brothers.

Without blood ties, at least the relationship wouldn't face such heavy moral judgment.

Though it would still face plenty of criticism and pressure—legally they were still brothers, and society still saw them as family—but at least... it wasn't real incest...

This realization made all three of them feel much more at ease.

Zhang Yuankai crouched on the floor picking up the glass shards, and looked up when he heard this. His expression was conflicted as he looked at An Yi: "An Yi, so were you two having a falling out before?"

He recalled how An Yi had deliberately kept his distance from An Cheng, the pained look in An Cheng's eyes when he watched An Yi, and the subtle, tense atmosphere between the two.

An Yi nodded. "Something like that."

He paused, not going into detail, simply saying, "I had some things I needed to sort out."

Shi Luo held his gaze for a long moment, then lowered his head again.

For a brief instant, An Yi caught a brief flash of disappointment in Shi Luo's eyes.

But quickly, Shi Luo raised his head again, a sincere, well-wishing smile spreading across his face: "Well then... congratulations to you both."

He meant it, every word straight from the heart.

Chen Heguang snapped out of it and quickly added, "Right, right! Congratulations! It's a bit sudden, but I wish you both all the happiness!"

He scratched his head as he spoke, then added, "But An Yi, you've been way too hush-hush about this! We've been roommates for so long and never noticed a thing!"

An Yi smiled but said nothing.

Zhang Yuankai finished cleaning up the glass, stood up, tossed the shards into the trash bin, and walked over to An Yi. He still looked a bit dazed, but his eyes were sincere: "I congratulate you too. I don't get it completely, but as long as you're both happy, that's all that counts."

An Yi looked at his three roommates, watching them go from shock to understanding, from confusion to well-wishes.

"Thank you," he said, his smile genuine.
