Chapter 59: Into a Post-Apocalyptic Superpower Novel, Day 11
by 三根木Chapter 59: Day 11 of Transmigrating into a Doomsday Supernatural Novel
"Watch out!" Ji Zishi growled low, and in an instant, fine arcs of electricity leaped across his body, illuminating the surroundings with a pale white glow.
The next moment, from several corridors, countless fist-sized creatures that looked like mutated beetles surged out like a tide.
Their shells were a similar dark green to the bacterial mat, with compound eyes blood-red, and they screeched with a hiss, like a pissed-off swarm of bees, charging madly at the four of them!
They were so numerous they almost filled the entire field of vision!
"Move! Fight our way out of here!"
Ji Zishi roared, and violent lightning shot out like silver serpents, instantly turning the dozens of mutated insects in the lead into charred corpses!
Old Cat slammed his foot down hard, and an earthen wall rose with a rumble, barely blocking the entrance to a corridor from which the most insects were pouring!
Dingzi moved fast, lobbing a few high-explosive micro bombs into the densest cluster of insects!
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The blasts echoed, and the fire and shockwave temporarily cleared a small area, sending broken limbs and shells flying in all directions!
An Yi's eyes went cold, and he swung his hands, conjuring countless sharp ice spikes out of thin air, shooting them like a storm of arrows at another group of insects, instantly pinning large numbers of them to the ground. The cold radiating from the ice spikes spread outward, freezing the surrounding bugs into ice cubes!
However, these bugs seemed endless; for every batch killed, more immediately surged forth from behind. They even began to spit out corrosive mucus, causing the earthen walls and ice shields to sizzle and erode.
"No way! There's too many of them!" Old Cat shouted, his earthen wall getting eaten through fast.
The four of them fought on the move, swift and in sync.
During the retreat, several fast insects with see-through wings on their backs suddenly swooped down from the shadows on the ceiling, breaking through the line of lightning and ice spikes, heading straight for the back of An Yi's neck!
"Watch out!"
Ji Zishi caught sight of them from the corner of his eye, and his heart almost stopped!
Without thinking, pure instinct, he reached out and grabbed An Yi's arm, yanking him behind him!
At the same time, without looking, he swung his other hand back, lobbing a highly compressed explosive thunderball, precisely hitting those flying insects!
Boom!
The insects were blown to pieces.
But that sudden burst and the yank, Ji Zishi lost his balance and stumbled back!
An Yi reacted fast, grabbing his arm to steady him: "Careful."
He steadied himself and jumped back in: "I'm fine! Move!"
"We can't keep this up!" Dingzi yelled as he changed his magazine, almost out of explosives.
And they had only moved less than a hundred meters.
Old Cat's earthen wall was faltering under the constant assault of corrosion and bugs; his face was pale, and pushing his power too far left him barely able to stand.
The lightning around Ji Zishi was still violent, but its frequency had already decreased, and his breathing had become heavy.
As strong as the thunder was, facing this endless sea of bugs, it was also showing its limits.
An Yi's eyes were cold and focused. The normal ice spike attacks were too slow; he had to get to the root of the problem!
His eyes locked onto the weird fungal carpet on the ground, which kept writhing and served as a breeding ground and signal source for the bugs.
An Yi pondered, then suddenly stepped forward!
He pressed both hands onto the ground covered with the fungal carpet!
Holding nothing back, the immense ice power inside him burst out like a broken dam!
Vrrrrm—!
Centered on his hands, a visible white shockwave of cold erupted like an ice ring! Everything it touched froze instantly!
Crack-crack-crackle—!
The extreme cold spread wildly!
The slippery, sticky fungal carpet on the ground lost moisture and vitality at an astonishing speed, going from a sickly dark green to a dry, brittle gray, covered with a thick layer of crystal-clear ice!
The countless beetles that had been crawling on it were frozen solid in that instant, becoming lifelike ice statues, maintaining their ferocious postures of a moment before!
The cold surged through the hall, roaring into the passages behind, turning the cloying, rotting air into a biting chill, even the walls and ceiling grew a thick coat of frost!
The hair-raising rustling and hissing sounds abruptly stopped, as if someone had pressed the mute button.
"No way... did it actually work?!"
Old Cat was gasping, staring in disbelief at the suddenly frozen icy ground.
Dingzi stopped too, his jaw dropped.
They knew An Yi was strong; after months of getting along, that was something everyone acknowledged.
But they never expected him to be THIS strong!!
Ji Zishi dialed back the lightning around him, staring at An Yi's back in shock. The power of this strike far exceeded anything he had seen before.
So... so awesome!
His heart was pounding so hard it sounded like it was echoing.
Just as he stepped forward, he suddenly noticed that An Yi's face was frighteningly pale, and his body gave a barely noticeable wobble.
"An Yi!" He stepped in and caught An Yi. "Let's get you up, you need rest."
He turned and crouched down. "I'll carry you."
However, before An Yi could react—
"Crack... crack..."
A faint cracking came from under the ice.
From deep in the corridor, the dark green fungal carpet, as if alive with endless energy, swarmed up again!
It writhed and pushed, even started oozing a corrosive slime, slowly eating away the ice on top.
"Shit! Can't this thing be frozen dead?!" Dingzi cursed in despair.
An Yi's heart sank.
The low temperature could only temporarily suppress and destroy the surface layer of the fungus carpet and insect swarm, but it could not completely eradicate the roots deeply embedded underground!
Their regeneration rate was too fast!
No wonder this thing could wipe out an entire base in the original story.
The chance of humans being overrun by the fungus was low, but definitely not zero.
Ji Zishi wrapped an arm around the exhausted An Yi and quickly retreated: "Move!"
No further words were needed. The four of them immediately turned around and sprinted back along the path they had come at full speed.
They wished they could fly.
An Yi, supported by Ji Zishi to conserve his strength, was suddenly struck by inspiration!
Space! His spatial ability!
Since low temperature could temporarily render them inactive... what if he completely isolated them?
With that thought, he didn't hesitate. While the fungus carpet and insect swarm hadn't yet fully broken through the ice, and the others weren't watching what he was doing, he focused his mental energy again.
He locked onto an area ahead—a patch of frozen fungus and insect corpses that had just been frozen and was not yet covered by the advancing fungus carpet.
— Store!
With that thought, the frozen patch of fungus and insect corpses vanished instantly, as if they had never existed.
It worked!
An Yi immediately sank his awareness into that vast space.
There, the frozen fungus and insect corpses floated silently in a corner of the space, still in their frozen state without any sign of melting. More importantly—they had completely stopped squirming, losing all vitality, as if they had become a true, lifeless specimen.
