Chapter 76 Zhao Jinzong Is Also a Madman
by 红牛地瓜Chapter 76: Zhao Jinzong Is Also a Madman
Uncle Wen placed the medical supplies on the coffee table in the living room. "Get some rest."
Uncle Wen left, and the lights downstairs were turned off. The sound of the car engine started outside, and in a moment, the car disappeared from the entrance. Zhao Jinzong was gone as well.
Chen Su stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the black car fade into the distance, smoking one cigarette after another.
No matter what he did, he could never seem to satisfy Zhao Jinzong.
Satisfying other people was really hard, especially for Chen Su. No one had ever demanded anything from him—what he needed to do to make others happy. When Chen Su was very young, he was already exceptionally pleasing, almost too well-behaved, but as he got older, nobody asked that of him anymore.
He didn't know how to make Zhao Jinzong happy or pleased.
He kept trying, but it never worked out.
Chen Su went to bed very late. In the middle of the night, he got a message from Zhao Jinzong.
Zhao Jinzong: "Asleep?"
Chen Su: "Not yet."
Zhao Jinzong replied with a voice message: "Come downstairs."
Chen Su slipped on his shoes and headed downstairs. The living room lights were off, but the kitchen light was on, its door open. The light spilled out, illuminating the floor-to-ceiling window and the dining table. Zhao Jinzong sat at the table, a bowl of noodles in front of him.
Chen Su stood frozen at the bottom of the stairs.
Zhao Jinzong extended his arm. "Come here."
He pulled Chen Su onto his lap and placed his injured hand on his shoulder. Chen Su's palm rested on the Enigma's silver tassel, and he toyed with it gently.
Zhao Jinzong fed Chen Su, and Chen Su ate every bite.
Chen Su kept staring at Zhao Jinzong's profile, as if lost in thought.
Zhao Jinzong looked up. "What's on your mind?"
Chen Su didn't answer. Instead, he wrapped his arms around Zhao Jinzong's neck, pressing his face against Zhao Jinzong's, feeling his warmth.
After letting Chen Su nuzzle him for a bit, Zhao Jinzong said, "There are plenty of ways to handle the divorce. Since I know what you want, I'll make it happen. You don't need to put yourself in danger. Chen Su, I can't handle it if something happens to you."
"You've already changed your marital status and won't get back together with Sheng Beiqing. It's a special situation. I applied to the International Federation a while back. The letter of intent should come in a day or two..."
"I've already gone to the Zhao family and made my position clear. No one can change my mind."
"I've ordered the rumors in the Four Bureaus to be suppressed."
"As for the Sheng family, I already gave them plenty of benefits a while back. You don't owe them anything."
All the things Chen Su didn't know about—things that hadn't happened yet and things that already had—were being taken care of where he couldn't see.
Chen Su nodded over and over.
Zhao Jinzong patted Chen Su's bottom, signaling him to stand up.
Chen Su stood up, and Zhao Jinzong unfastened his belt, took off his jacket, unbuttoned his cuffs, and rolled up his sleeves. He took a razor blade from his pocket and made a cut on his own arm, right where Chen Su's wound was—but deeper.
Chen Su's eyes widened in shock.
Before Zhao Jinzong pulled out the blade, Chen Su had no idea what he was about to do. Only when blood appeared on Zhao Jinzong's arm did he understand what was going on.
In the dim light, Zhao Jinzong looked Chen Su in the eye and said, slowly and clearly, "I didn't teach you well enough."
"No... that's not true."
Chen Su's voice was hoarse and choked. His eyes welled up. Regaining his senses, he rushed upstairs for the first aid kit and bandaged Zhao Jinzong's wound.
Chen Su stared at the fresh blood and thought, Zhao Jinzong is just as crazy as the rest.
After bandaging the wound, Zhao Jinzong put two candies in Chen Su's hand. "Head back to the bedroom. I'll take a shower first."
Chen Su clutched the candies, tucked them into a drawer in the study, and went back to the bedroom.
The bedroom reeked of cigarette smoke—Chen Su had smoked half a pack. He hadn't expected Zhao Jinzong to come back, so he cracked the window before lying down.
Ten minutes later, Zhao Jinzong came back. He pulled open the drawer, found the half pack, took one out, bit it between his lips, lit it, and turned off the light.
In the darkness, the crimson glow flickered faintly between his fingers.
When he finished, he stubbed it out, tossed it in the trash, lay down, and pulled Chen Su into his arms. His nicotine-stained fingers brushed Chen Su's lips as he warned, "No more smoking, got it?"
"Mm, I won't."
"No matter how late it is, I'll always come back—even if we've been fighting."
"Okay."
Chen Su fell asleep in Zhao Jinzong's arms.
The next morning, Chen Su woke up with a headache. The day before, Sheng Beiqing had someone give him too many pills—probably a side effect or aftereffect.
Before he even opened his eyes, Chen Su called out, "Zhao Jinzong..."
"Headache?"
"Yeah."
Zhao Jinzong massaged Chen Su's temples and released a soothing pheromone. As Chen Su felt better, his forehead gradually relaxed. He opened his eyes and saw Zhao Jinzong sitting by the bed, all dressed.
Chen Su was used to it by now.
Used to looking for Zhao Jinzong first thing when he woke up.
If he didn't see him, he would always feel disappointed and in a bad mood.
Zhao Jinzong pulled him up from the bed and helped him put the monitoring watch back on. "Go downstairs and have breakfast."
"Mm."
Chen Su got up to change clothes. According to the leave slip, he could return to the Drug Supervision Bureau today.
Breakfast was laid out downstairs. While eating, Chen Su noticed that Uncle Lin was absent, with only Uncle Wen attending.
After the meal, Uncle Wen opened the back door and said respectfully, "Mr. Chen, please get in."
Chen Su and Zhao Jinzong got into the same car. After yesterday's events, there was no longer any need to hide their relationship.
Uncle Wen first dropped Chen Su off at the Drug Supervision Bureau. Alighting from the car, Chen Su clocked in as usual before heading to the experimental base. Halfway there, he ran into Meng Suizhi.
Meng Suizhi said Sheng Beiqing was being held in custody awaiting trial.
Yesterday, Zhao Jinzong cut a meeting short, went personally to the Jing City Monitoring Department, and reviewed surveillance footage for a long time. He also had the General Bureau personnel conduct a search in Fucheng District. Eventually, they found two witnesses, which gave them the lead.
Sheng Beiqing is suspected of kidnapping and attempted rape.
Meng Suizhi also said that the Alpha Federal General Administration already knew about this matter and had sent people over; they should deal with it strictly. Crimes committed by Four Bureaus staff are always punished more harshly than those by ordinary people.
Meng Suizhi congratulated Chen Su, saying that divorce should not be too difficult anymore, just a matter of time.
Chen Su nodded, with a look of relief.
The next day at work, Chen Su got a courier call about a confidential document that required his personal signature.
Chen Su signed for it at the security booth outside the Drug Supervision Bureau gate. He glanced at the shipping address—it was from the International Federation.
After returning to his office, Chen Su opened the file. It was a letter of intent, asking Chen Su whether he was willing to terminate his marriage with Sheng Beiqing and marry Zhao Jinzong.
Meng Suizhi came out to get water and saw Chen Su staring blankly at a document. He came over to look and raised an eyebrow, saying, "Strange."
"What?"
"The date on this—when it was mailed, Sheng Beiqing wasn't suspected of a crime yet."
"Hmm." The document was dated a few days ago.
"Sheng Beiqing just performed a meritorious deed. Logically, if you change your marital status during this period, the International Federation won't take it too seriously. Even if you truly want a divorce later, you'll have to go through formal procedures. The Federation wouldn't step in at this critical moment and discourage someone who's done them a service."
"Hmm... Zhao Jinzong applied for this."
"Well, that makes a bit more sense..."
Chen Su flipped through the document and found an attachment. The attachment included Zhao Jinzong's marriage application letter submitted to the International Federation, written in his own handwriting.
Chen Su traced Zhao Jinzong's bold handwriting, looking at the platinum ring on his finger.
He knew that if he just signed, the marital status in the system would be finalized. He didn't even need to go to the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Chen Su put this document in his experimental data, brought it home in the evening, hid it in a study drawer, locked it, and didn't mention a single word to Zhao Jinzong.
— "Have you thought about getting married again?"
— "Mm, let's talk about it after you're done with work."
Chen Su wasn't making a promise—it was coaxing, a lie, an escape.
