    Chapter 136: Lying

Uncle Wen's car arrived at the entrance shortly. Chen Su helped Zhao Jinzong into the car. Time was critical, so Chen Su called the traffic police to clear the way. Along the way, Chen Su held Zhao Jinzong's injured hand high, watching Enigma's face grow paler. His heart pounded with anxiety, like a constant drumming, unable to calm down.

Chen Su's voice trembled: "Zhao Jinzong, what's your blood type?"

Given the amount of blood loss, Zhao Jinzong would definitely need a transfusion.

Chen Su was type O, so he could donate...

Zhao Jinzong's deep voice cut him off: "Chen Su, you lied."

    "Wh-what?"

Chen Su took a moment to react, confused and unsure what Zhao Jinzong meant.

Zhao Jinzong looked at Chen Su, his eyes filled with anger, disappointment... and a mess of other unreadable emotions.

The car arrived at the hospital, and Zhao Jinzong was sent into the operating room.

An ordinary suture wouldn't work; deep-layer stitching was necessary.

Chen Su paced outside the OR, unable to sit still for a moment.

Uncle Wen called Old Master Zhao and, on his way back, bought a bottle of water, handing it to Chen Su. Chen Su shook his head, saying, "No, thanks."

Chen Su's voice was still trembling. After a few steps, he looked up at the red sign above the OR: "Surgery in Progress."

Chen Su waited for a long time. Old Master Zhao too had arrived, but Zhao Jinzong still hadn't come out.

After Old Master Zhao arrived, he asked Uncle Wen about the situation. Uncle Wen filled him in briefly; Old Master Zhao frowned and glanced at Chen Su.

Because of an alpha, Zhao Jinzong had gone too hard on the Sheng family, driving Sheng Beiqing to a point of no return—he was ready to die trying to take Zhao Jinzong down.

Old Master Zhao stood by, leaning on his cane, waiting.

Chen Su kept checking the time. Finally, after two and a half hours, Zhao Jinzong came out.

The doctor said it was a deep stab to the palm that hit a small artery and two flexor tendons. They did a tendon repair and vascular anastomosis. The surgery was successful, but he'd need to stay in the hospital for a week under observation. The next week would be critical: he had to keep his hand raised, no letting it hang down, or swelling could mess with blood flow. If anything seems off, hit the nurse call button.

Chen Su and Old Master Zhao both let out a sigh of relief.

Zhao Jinzong was wheeled into his room.

Old Master Zhao glanced at Chen Su. Chen Su went to buy some fruit first. When he got back, he heard shouting from the room. The second he showed up, the old man stopped in his tracks, then Uncle Wen helped him leave.

Chen Su carried the fruit into the room.

He sat down by the bed and started peeling an orange for Zhao Jinzong. His hands wouldn't stop shaking for some reason.

    Zhao Jinzong said, "No need."

Chen Su put down the fruit and looked at Zhao Jinzong, his eyes wet. "Does it hurt?"

    Zhao Jinzong frowned. "Go home."

    "I..."

"Chen Su, come back when you've thought it through."

Zhao Jinzong's tone left no room for argument.

Chen Su shook his head. "No."

Chen Su wanted to stay. In the past, even if Zhao Jinzong said no, he wouldn't kick Chen Su out when he insisted on staying. But this time it was different—Zhao Jinzong completely shut him out.

Chen Su called out to Zhao Jinzong, but Zhao Jinzong rarely responded. This standoff happened a few times, and every time Uncle Wen had to step in to smooth things over.

That evening, Tan Zhou and Old Master Tan showed up.

Zhao Jinzong told Chen Su to leave, but Chen Su stood his ground.

Tan Zhou smiled. "It's all good. You go on back and get some rest. I've got this."

    "Okay." Chen Su left.

On the way home, he kept going over it in his head.

Uncle Wen asked, "Mr. Chen, what exactly happened at the airport?"

If it was just Sheng Beiqing seeking revenge and stabbing Zhao Jinzong, there was no reason for Zhao Jinzong to treat Chen Su so coldly. Zhao Jinzong would never do that.

Uncle Wen had been with Zhao Jinzong for years. He figured there had to be more to the story behind his anger.

Chen Su frowned and walked through what happened, and then it hit him why Zhao Jinzong was so pissed.

Sure, Sheng Beiqing's taunts pissed Zhao Jinzong off, but that wasn't all. What really got him was that Chen Su had shoved him out of the way. If Zhao Jinzong hadn't grabbed the knife—and he almost didn't make it—then Chen Su would have had zero chance of surviving.

Last time on the yacht, before Zhao Jinzong even got a look at Chen Su, the whole thing blew up right in front of him—Chen Su and the yacht both reduced to rubble.

Zhao Jinzong had already watched the person he loved die once.

No one could handle that happening twice.

And today, it was the second time he had to watch that.

Chen Su had promised Zhao Jinzong he'd take care of himself first, then worry about him.

Chen Su had broken that promise.

Chen Su simply couldn't do it.

There was no way he could just stand by and do nothing. Even if Zhao Jinzong got angry, if it happened again, he'd do exactly the same thing. Chen Su would still shove him aside without a second thought and take it himself.

Chen Su and Zhao Jinzong never saw eye to eye on this.

He always ended up making Zhao Jinzong mad.

Uncle Wen took one look at Chen Su's face and advised, "Wait till the Chief's feeling better, then go to the hospital and sweet-talk him."

Chen Su didn't answer. He knew Zhao Jinzong wouldn't give him the time of day.

With his hand like that, Zhao Jinzong obviously couldn't text back.

When Chen Su got home, he called Tan Zhou to ask about Zhao Jinzong's condition. Tan Zhou said to hold on, and then there was a sound of a door opening—he'd stepped out of the room to take the call.

Tan Zhou said Zhao Jinzong was still pissed, so he'd watch him for now, and told Chen Su to get some sleep.

Chen Su mumbled an "okay." "I'll drop off breakfast in the morning."

Tan Zhou wanted to keep persuading, but Chen Su hung up.

    Tan Zhou: "..."

Why is everyone so hard to please? Why is it always him who has to do the coaxing?

Chen Su barely slept all night, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep. The next morning, he made breakfast and brought it over.

Zhao Jinzong was lying with his eyes closed, his face pale.

Chen Su wasn't able to talk to Zhao Jinzong. He silently set down the breakfast and left.

Uncle Wen escorted Zhao Jinzong back to the Drug Supervision Bureau.

At noon, Chen Su came again.

Zhao Jinzong was still resting. In the evening, Chen Su didn't come.

Zhao Jinzong spent a week resting in the hospital. Over the next few days, Chen Su didn't visit.
