Chapter 79 I Have No Family Left
by 红牛地瓜Chapter 79: I Have No Family Left
Han Yu is a complete lunatic; nothing he does would be surprising.
Meng Suizhi will never forget September 13th two years ago. He had just finished work at the Drug Supervision Bureau and arrived home at midnight. He was about to take a shower and go to bed. As soon as he entered the bathroom, took off his clothes, and was about to shower, the bathroom door was yanked open.
Han Yu burst in. With one hand, he pinned Meng Suizhi in front of the sink, facing the mirror. He squeezed Meng Suizhi's chin, his thumb rubbing it gently. "Brother, why are you back so late again..."
Meng Suizhi looked up, about to ask Han Yu why he was still awake.
But then—he saw a face in the mirror that was very similar to his own!
Meng Suizhi froze.
Han Yu said, "I wanted to see you, but you were never around..."
Han Yu wanted to see Meng Suizhi, but Meng Suizhi was never there, so he had gotten cosmetic surgery to look like him!
Han Yu is really capable of anything!
Meng Suizhi had drunk wine the night before and still hadn't slept well. Fortunately, he hadn't driven to Rongcheng. The next morning at checkout, he asked the front desk about the waiter who had delivered the wine the night before. The staff said Han Yu had just arrived yesterday and left last night.
Meng Suizhi furrowed his brow, then left again...
Chen Su came out of the elevator, dragging his suitcase to check out as well. Meng Suizhi didn't see Zhao Jinzong. "Where's General Director Zhao?"
"He took an early flight back to the capital for some business."
Chen Su put the suitcase in the trunk and drove to the hospital to complete Xiao Li's discharge procedures. On the way back to the capital, Meng Suizhi's expression was unusually serious.
Chen Su first went home to pick up a few clothes for Xiao Li, then received a call from Uncle Wen, who gave him a hospital address, saying Zhao Jinzong had already arranged everything. He was waiting for Chen Su on the first floor of the inpatient building.
Chen Su took the clothes and went to the hospital. Uncle Wen had called ahead, so he was allowed in without any trouble. He soon entered the ward, where there was also a special caregiver. Uncle Wen said he would take care of things here. Chen Su nodded, said goodbye to Xiao Li, and then left.
In the car, Meng Suizhi said, "I saw Han Yu yesterday."
"Where?"
"At the hotel. He knew I came for Xiao Li. I'm afraid... I'm afraid he'll go crazy and hurt him. We need to be more careful around the hospital."
"Okay, I'll talk to Uncle Wen."
"Yeah." Meng Suizhi sighed. "I didn't expect to cause you this sort of trouble."
"It's no trouble. I'll be relying on you in the future too." Chen Su said with a smile.
Instead of going straight back to the Drug Supervision Bureau, Chen Su said he wanted to go to the Special Zone to see Jiang An. They bought some fruit on the way. After getting out of the car, Chen Su went to see Jiang An, while Meng Suizhi went to fetch Jiang An's recent test reports.
Jiang An always smiled when he saw Chen Su. "Engineer Chen, good morning."
"Good morning. How have you been feeling recently?"
"Pretty good."
"Any fainting episodes?"
"No... except that I get drowsy after taking medicine."
"That's normal, nothing to worry about."
"Okay."
Chen Su chatted with Jiang An for a while. When Meng Suizhi arrived with the test results, he greeted Jiang An, and Chen Su got up to leave with him.
Back in the car, Chen Su reviewed the reports.
Chen Su said Jiang An had received the injection slightly later than Xiao Li. So far, their physical conditions are similar. Jiang An's gland was severely failing a long time ago; he had undergone two gland replacement surgeries.
Chen Su took the test results back to the lab and buried himself in work again. Lunch and dinner were brought by Meng Suizhi, but Chen Su only took a few bites, in a very perfunctory manner. He didn't leave after work but instead stayed in the lab.
Uncle Wen called to check in, but Chen Su just said, "A little later."
A little later till when?
Uncle Wen didn't know.
The first day, Chen Su left the lab at ten. Uncle Wen drove him to the hospital and accompanied Xiao Li for an hour.
Xiao Li knew he needed a gland replacement. He also knew it was hard to find a well-matched gland; maybe he didn't have much time left. Afraid that Chen Su would be very upset, he smiled and said, "Brother... It hurts too much. I'm afraid of pain... Let's not do this anymore, okay?"
Chen Su stroked Xiao Li's head. "Can you endure it for a while?"
His words were like a plea.
Xiao Li nodded, then shook his head.
"It really hurts. Can I go home and stay with you instead?"
"No." Chen Su refused, but promised Xiao Li, "You haven't participated in architectural design, you haven't seen the Colosseum in Rome, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, or the Taj Mahal... You're still young. The journey of life is still long."
"I don't want to go there anymore."
"I have no family left. Can you stay with your big brother a little longer?"
"..." Xiao Li was silent for a long time. Then he looked up, his eyes shining. "Okay."
Chen Su had planned to go home, but after seeing Xiao Li, he didn't. Instead, he asked Uncle Wen to go back to the lab. Uncle Wen tried to talk him out of it, but Chen Su then said coldly, "I'll take a cab myself."
Uncle Wen: "..."
Uncle Wen didn't dare say anything. He drove Chen Su back to the lab, then called Zhao Jinzong, but couldn't get through. Zhao Jinzong was on another call.
A while later, Uncle Wen tried again, but the line was still busy. He sent Zhao Jinzong a text message.
After returning to the lab, Chen Su called Zhao Jinzong. The call connected quickly.
Under the fluorescent lights, Chen Su was changing into his work clothes, his phone on the table. He stared at the name on the caller ID, not knowing how to start.
Zhao Jinzong asked, "What's wrong?"
"I'm not coming home tonight."
"Hmm?"
"I want to stay and work in the lab."
"All night?"
"I'll sleep a little in the office." Chen Su asked, "Is that okay?"
Zhao Jinzong took a shallow breath. "Alright, I'll have Uncle Wen send a blanket over. Don't catch a cold, and don't smoke."
"Okay."
Chen Su hung up the phone, finally feeling a bit more at ease.
Meng Suizhi didn't know Chen Su would be staying up all night. The vast experimental base was left with only Chen Su and the cold, mechanical instruments.
Chen Su pulled an all-nighter.
The next morning, when Meng Suizhi arrived, he saw Chen Su dozing off at his desk. He stepped out quietly, bought him breakfast, and when he returned, Chen Su was no longer in the office—he had already gone to the lab.
Meng Suizhi called out from the door, "Have something to eat first."
"Okay." Chen Su came out half an hour later, his breakfast already cold.
Chen Su ate while walking to clock in. He finished eating on the way back, washed his hands, and returned to the lab.
Meng Suizhi studied Chen Su's face. "You stayed here all night?"
"Yeah." Chen Su said, "I didn't dare sleep. He's the only family I have left."
Chen Su was afraid that if he woke up one day, he would be alone again.
The next day, Chen Su still didn't go home.
Lunch and dinner were delivered by Uncle Wen.
At nine o'clock, Uncle Wen called to check on him, and Chen Su said he wasn't coming back, then hung up.
He didn't answer any subsequent calls. His phone was on silent, and he didn't even look at it.
Zhao Jinzong had sent him many messages today, but Chen Su didn't reply to any of them.
At midnight, Zhao Jinzong finished work, closed the file, rubbed his brow, and personally went to the No. 5 experimental base. Meng Suizhi really couldn't hold on any longer; he went downstairs to buy some cigarettes, cooling balm, and instant coffee—all to stay alert.
Meng Suizhi ran into Zhao Jinzong and bowed his head in greeting. "General Director Zhao."
"Mm."
Zhao Jinzong went upstairs and reached the lab door. Chen Su, thinking it was Meng Suizhi, didn't look up. He kept his head down, recording data, his face haggard beyond recognition.
"Chen Su."
Chen Su looked up at the sound. "Huh?"
He saw Enigma standing at the door and froze for two seconds. Chen Su knew that Zhao Jinzong must have called and messaged him, telling him to rest. Chen Su didn't want to lie to Zhao Jinzong, nor could he refuse any request from him, so he simply ignored his phone to avoid the issue.
Zhao Jinzong said, his voice deep, "It's been two days."
"I did sleep last night. I'm not sleepy now... Let me work a bit longer, then I'll... go back to the office and rest, okay?"
Chen Su asked tentatively.
He didn't have time to go home and rest; the round trip takes too long.
Chen Su was reluctant to waste time on the road.
