    Chapter 94: A Last Letter

Chen Su took a deep breath. On the endless sea, many white dots appeared as rescue boats rushed toward him at top speed.

"The alpha secondary differentiation agent never succeeded. I'm not an alpha either."

"I invented a formula that releases a special pheromone similar to alpha gland fluid. I inject it into my glands periodically to disguise myself as an alpha. I developed the first formula in high school. The side effects were severe, causing immense harm to my body. Over time, my glands were completely destroyed."

"I never injected those test subjects with the alpha differentiation agent. I gave them my invented formula, which made them appear like alphas temporarily. After they stop taking it, they gradually return to normal without lasting damage."

"Han Yu, two months ago, the doctors gave me a terminal diagnosis. I won't survive."

    "Take him and leave."

"Go! Go!" Chen Su pushed Han Yu.

Han Yu left with Jiang Minglang.

Chen Su had no strength left. He collapsed onto the deck, weightless, tilting his head back to look at the sky hidden behind dark clouds. Rain poured down. Chen Su slowly closed his eyes, feeling defeated and drained.

He knew he would die in Antarctica. He had known since before he set out.

Chen Su's body, withered like dead wood, was rotten inside; only the surface remained intact.

He traveled to Antarctica to do one last thing for Zhao Jinzong, to make Zhao Jinzong hate him a little less.

Chen Su pulled a green apple–flavored candy from his pocket and popped it into his mouth.

    ...

The rain grew heavier. The rescue boat was still kilometers from the yacht where Chen Su stood.

"Faster," Zhao Jinzong said, his brow furrowed.

Helicopters roared past the rescue boat. Worry was impossible to hide on Zhao Jinzong's handsome face.

A deafening explosion erupted on the calm sea, blast after blast.

The helicopter circled, not daring to approach.

The rescue boat fell into a dead silence.

Someone grabbed binoculars and looked. "There! A lifeboat! Survivors!"

    ...

The rescue boat advanced slowly. Amid the shockwaves of the explosion, the helicopter flew in cautiously, dropping lifebuoys onto the sea.

Half an hour later, most survivors had been rescued. Zhao Jinzong still hadn't seen Chen Su.

The alpha secondary agent, Wei Cheng's subordinates who attempted to overthrow the International Federation's authority, the villains who experimented on omegas, the old cases that resurfaced—all were buried in the sea along with Zhao Jinzong's beloved, Chen Su.

    Chen Su was gone.

    Zhao Jinzong received a medal.

All the survivors identified Chen Su as the mastermind. Tanzhou sent the survivors to the Special Zone for full-body examinations, detecting pheromones similar to those of alphas, but no trace of the alpha differentiation agents linked to the Huai City case. Chen Su committed no crime. He did not disappoint Zhao Jinzong.

Chen Su had promised Zhao Jinzong he would stop researching alpha differentiation agents.

    Chen Su kept his word.

The case was closed. Zhao Jinzong reported to the International Federation and returned to the capital.

Meng Suizhi's face had also been identified by survivors, fully clearing his name. He was reinstated.

Zhao Jinzong hadn't returned to the General Bureau for a week. He didn't answer any calls, emails, or messages. He wasn't even at the Zhao family home. He stayed at Chen Su's home.

On the eighth day, Meng Suizhi found a letter in a folder—to be precise, a farewell letter:

    Suizhi,

I once thought the Drug Supervision Bureau had long since forgotten the Huai City case from years ago. Your persistence changed my impression of the bureau. I don't know many people, so I have no choice but to entrust Xiao Li to you.

Please take good care of Xiao Li. He is very well-behaved, just in poor health and a bit stubborn. He loves architecture. He's grown up now; I want him to finish college.

    Thank you.

    —Chen Su, May 7th

In addition to the one for Meng Suizhi, Xiao Li also received a suicide note from Chen Su, left under his pillow.

Xiao Li had been staying at the Zhao residence temporarily. He wanted to return to the Chen home, but he knew Zhao Jinzong needed that place more. He gave Zhao Jinzong that space. On the seventh day, after receiving a call from Meng Suizhi, he brought dinner and returned to the Chen home.

While packing his things, Xiao Li found the suicide note:

    Xiao Li,

Brother can't be with you anymore. From now on, listen to Deputy Meng. I've entrusted him to take care of you. I bought accident insurance, with you as the beneficiary. The contract is in the bottom right drawer of my study. The key is in the pocket of the second-to-last coat (the second from the right end of the row).

In the drawer, there's also a letter for Zhao Jinzong. Give it to him. You don't have to associate with him anymore. If he is harsh with you, don't take it to heart. It's Brother's fault; he's just taking it out on you.

I regret that I can't celebrate your birthday with you anymore.

Trust the Drug Supervision Bureau. Live well. May your future be bright.

    —Chen Su, March 8th

Xiao Li found the key and opened the drawer. His pupils trembled.

The drawer was filled with green apple–flavored candies.

He moved the candies aside. Inside was a belt—a gift from Zhao Jinzong, which Xiao Li had accepted on his brother's behalf.

There were also two wedding invitations, carefully preserved, both for Zhao Jinzong's own wedding. It was then that Xiao Li realized that three years ago, before marrying Sheng Beiqing, Chen Su had already received an invitation to Zhao Jinzong's wedding.

Chen Su had kept them all this time. Had his brother known Zhao Jinzong since then? Had he liked him for that long? Then why did he marry Sheng Beiqing?

    Xiao Li couldn't understand.

He took the letter and knocked on the door of the master bedroom. "Chief, Brother left a letter for you."

    The locked door opened.

Light from the hallway spilled into the dark bedroom. Zhao Jinzong extended a hand. A strong smell of smoke wafted out, and Xiao Li coughed. He handed over the envelope.

"Chief, I brought dinner and left it downstairs. Please eat some." Xiao Li paused. "If Brother did something to upset you, you can blame me, take your anger out on me. Don't hold a grudge against him."

Xiao Li didn't understand why Chen Su married Sheng Beiqing.

All he knew was that Zhao Jinzong was the person his brother loved most. He didn't want the person his brother loved most to resent him after his death.

    That would be too cruel.
