Chapter 106 You’ll Never Learn
by 红牛地瓜Chapter 106: You Never Learn
Chen Su arrived at the Zhao family villa. The lights in the house were on. He got out of the car and rang the doorbell; the butler opened the door.
"Mr. Chen?" the butler said with delight.
It had been a while since he had last seen Chen Su.
"Is General Director Zhao home?"
The weather had turned cold, with a chilly wind blowing. The butler opened the door. "He's home. Please, come in."
Chen Su headed upstairs. Halfway, he turned to look at the butler at the foot of the stairs. "Have there been many guests at the Zhao place lately?"
"Huh?" The butler seemed puzzled. "Not recently."
"Thank you."
Chen Su quickened his pace, thumping up the stairs, unbuttoning his collar as he went. It was already winter, and he hadn't worn much when he left. The Zhao family had underfloor heating, making it quite warm indoors.
Chen Su was wearing gloves, and unbuttoning was clumsy. He just yanked hard, and the button popped off and clattered onto the floor. By then, he had reached the study door.
Chen Su didn't knock—he walked straight in.
In the study, a faint scent of incense hung in the air.
Zhao Jinzong had a cup of coffee beside him, a thick stack of documents under his palm. At the rude intrusion, Zhao Jinzong frowned slightly and lifted his gaze.
When their eyes met, Chen Su's eyes traveled down Zhao Jinzong's gaunt face, observing his clean, straight neck and then his slender fingers.
There was no ring on Zhao Jinzong's hand.
Chen Su knocked on the door, realizing he should have done so earlier. "Sorry."
"..."
Zhao Jinzong neither allowed Chen Su in nor drove him away.
Chen Su walked inside and stood before the desk, separated from Zhao Jinzong by it. Under the desk, Zhao Jinzong's leather shoes shifted, the sound unusually clear in the quiet room.
Zhao Jinzong—who had forbidden Chen Su from coming to the Zhao home—slightly raised his head, his expression cold, his silence heavy.
Chen Su asked, "Are you going to get engaged to that alpha with a 99% compatibility?"
"Chen Su, that's my personal business."
Zhao Jinzong meant he didn't need to answer to Chen Su. There was no relationship between them now; if there was any, it was just a superior-subordinate one.
"No." Chen Su drew a quick breath. "If you're getting married, I'll prepare a wedding gift for you and leave the Drug Supervision Bureau. If you're not getting married, I'll keep pursuing you."
Zhao Jinzong gave a cold laugh. "You're pursuing me."
His tone was cold and indifferent, making it hard to tell if it was a question or a statement.
A week without showing up, without sending messages, without calling, without contact—that could hardly be called "pursuit."
Chen Su nodded. "Mm."
"Chen Su, you never learn."
Before withdrawing his gaze, Zhao Jinzong's eyes lingered on Chen Su's gloves for a few seconds, then he went back to work, a clear dismissal.
Chen Su stood frozen, thinking, "Never learn what?"
Chen Su asked, "Is there something I'm not doing well enough?"
"I've already started learning golf."
"I came often to give you gifts recently, but you were always away..."
"And you rarely reply to messages."
Chen Su was met with endless silence.
Chen Su stood there in front of Zhao Jinzong, frustration surging like a flood breaking through a dam. Looking at the cold man before him, he felt an intense sense of abandonment.
Chen Su restrained himself. "Zhao Jinzong, I don't know what to do to make you happy..."
"I have no reason to give you an answer."
"..."
Chen Su's episode flared up. "Zhao Jinzong! I want to know if you'll marry someone else! I just want one answer—why can't you even tell me that?"
Chen Su's voice was loud—accusatory and reproachful.
That was completely inappropriate for someone trying to win him over.
Zhao Jinzong had no obligation to respond to him. It was Chen Su who wanted to pursue someone, Chen Su who insisted on it, and Zhao Jinzong hadn't even allowed it.
Chen Su shouldn't lose his temper with Zhao Jinzong.
Since returning to the capital, Chen Su had run out of medicine and hadn't gone back to the hospital. He had relapsed; when BPD flared, it made him irritable, anxious, triggered extreme psychological reactions, and countless thoughts of being abandoned.
By the time Chen Su realized it, it was already too late.
He had already vented his anger at Zhao Jinzong.
Chen Su lowered his head. "I'm sorry..."
"..."
Chen Su repeated himself. "I'm sorry. I often lose control. I'm sick... I forgot to take my medicine recently. I'll take it properly."
Zhao Jinzong asked, "What illness?"
"Nothing much. I just get irritable and anxious easily, and I tend to lose my temper." Chen Su took a step back. "I'll seriously pursue you. If one day you do get married and have a partner, I'll leave."
Chen Su picked up the coffee from the desk. "Don't drink coffee at night. I'll go now. Tomorrow I'll buy you a gift to apologize."
Chen Su's hand, holding the coffee, trembled. As he neared the door, he glanced back at Zhao Jinzong, who hadn't looked up and was still frowning deeply.
Chen Su promised, "Zhao Jinzong, I'll get proper treatment. Tonight's outburst wasn't intentional. Please don't be too angry."
Chen Su left the room and went downstairs, where he threw away the coffee and reminded the butler, "Don't send General Director Zhao coffee this late anymore. He just got over an illness and needs rest."
"The General Director wants it..." The butler couldn't stop him—didn't dare to.
Chen Su walked to the coffee maker, took all the coffee beans, and left.
The next morning, Chen Su bought a bouquet of flowers, a few vases, and a belt.
The butler was present as Chen Su brought the items into the Zhao residence.
Chen Su trimmed and arranged them one by one at the coffee table.
He had brought three vases—two smaller ones. After he finished arranging all the flowers, he placed the largest vase on the dining table and handed the two smaller ones to the butler.
"Put one in the bedroom and one in the study. They help with sleep. Thank you for the trouble."
"Mr. Chen is thoughtful. I'll make sure to pass on your message." Just as the butler accepted the flowers, Zhao Jinzong came downstairs, fastening his cufflinks and flexing his wrist. The silver tassels on his shoulders swayed lightly.
Chen Su glanced over. "Morning."
Zhao Jinzong gave a small upward glance. "Mm."
"Director, breakfast is ready." A servant brought out the meal and set it before Zhao Jinzong.
The servant glanced at Chen Su in the distance. "Mr. Chen, have you eaten?"
Chen Su came back to himself. "No need. I'll be off soon."
Zhao Jinzong lifted his head and shot the servant a glance.
Chen Su set the gift within Zhao Jinzong's reach. "A belt, by way of apology."
"Mm."
Zhao Jinzong neither discarded it nor picked it up.
Chen Su set the item down. "Do you have time next weekend to play golf with me?"
"No time."
"Then go ahead with your work. Call me when you're free. I'm available anytime." Chen Su was silent for a moment. "I reflected on things after I got home last night. Pursuing you is my own business. I shouldn't demand a response from you, and you don't have to answer my private questions."
Chen Su's conclusion was: "I'll know my place."
Zhao Jinzong's face darkened.
A servant came out with a fresh breakfast. "Mr. Chen, please stay and eat something before you go, or you might get dizzy from low blood sugar."
Chen Su was about to decline when Uncle Wen strode in, holding a gift box.
When Uncle Wen saw Chen Su, his eyes widened slightly. "Good morning, Mr. Chen. What brings you here?"
Chen Su smiled. "I came to apologize."
Uncle Wen looked at Zhao Jinzong, whose face was gloomy. "………………?" Was this really an apology?
Uncle Wen coughed twice, breaking the awkward atmosphere. He opened the box in his hand and set it on top of the belt gift box Chen Su had given.
Inside the box was the monitoring watch he had once given to Zhao Jinzong. After Chen Su got it wet, the screen went black and it was now useless.
"Director, the monitoring watch has been repaired. It can be used again now."
Zhao Jinzong said flatly, "Mm."
Chen Su asked, puzzled, "Monitoring watch?"
Uncle Wen glanced at Zhao Jinzong and explained, "This watch is custom-made. It can detect pheromones near the wearer."
"..."
Chen Su stood frozen in place.
A thunderclap went off in his mind—
If this watch could detect pheromones near the wearer... When Sheng Beiqing was on a mission and came back to find Chen Su, Zhao Jinzong knew, which was why he came back so quickly. While Zhao Jinzong was far away overseas, Sheng Beiqing also sought out Chen Su after completing his mission. Just after Sheng Beiqing left, Zhao Jinzong called Chen Su, asking where he was.
Zhao Jinzong knew that Chen Su and Sheng Beiqing had met late at night.
Yet Zhao Jinzong hadn't asked a single word.
What had been going through Zhao Jinzong's mind at that time?
When Zhao Jinzong called, was he afraid, was he uneasy...
In Zhao Jinzong's eyes, Chen Su had once been deeply in love with Sheng Beiqing.
