Chapter 123: My Dear Master, Sweet Dreams

After a long pause, Shang Xu finally called out softly:

    "Cheng Feng."

Cheng Feng kept his eyes shut, pretending to sleep, but his lashes fluttered uncontrollably. After a few minutes, he couldn't keep it up and slowly opened his eyes, meeting Shang Xu's gaze.

The man's brows were creased with a deep weariness, faint dark circles under his eyes, making Cheng Feng's heart clench.

He twitched his fingertips, wanting to reach out to Shang Xu: "Master, why are you here this late? Don't you need to rest?"

"Not tired yet," Shang Xu said softly, opening the food container he'd brought, "You slept all afternoon and barely ate. Eat something first, then go back to sleep."

Cheng Feng looked at his weary face and took the container. The soup inside was still warm, with a few light side dishes. He ate slowly, bite by bite, feeling Shang Xu's gaze on him the whole time—gentle, like moonlight in the night.

Setting down the empty container and chopsticks, Cheng Feng looked up at Shang Xu: "Let me rub your temples."

Shang Xu was tidying up the container and looked up: "No need, you rest. I'll leave after you fall asleep."

Cheng Feng wasn't about to be polite with his master right now.

He was injured. Even if he got a little bold, his master probably wouldn't mind. So he grabbed Shang Xu's wrist, gently pulled him closer, and pressed his hands to his temples, massaging with a soft touch.

Shang Xu was startled and instinctively tried to refuse: "No need..."

"Master, don't talk," Cheng Feng cut him off, his fingertips moving in steady circles, "You haven't been resting well. Your dark circles are almost down to your chin. Keep this up, and you'll look like you're in your thirties. It'll ruin your looks."

    He was totally bluffing.

Even tired, Shang Xu's handsome features were undiminished, instead gaining a fragile vulnerability that made him even harder to look away from.

Surprisingly, Shang Xu took it seriously and stopped moving, obediently letting him massage, his eyelids slowly drooping.

"Shang Xu, get on the bed," Cheng Feng said softly, "It's awkward with you sitting there. My arms are getting sore."

He knew this was crossing a line, blurring the boundary between servant and master.

But he just wanted to call him by name, and he genuinely thought this position made massaging awkward. No ulterior motive at all.

Shang Xu seemed too sleepy to think much. Without hesitation, he climbed onto the bed, sat down in front of Cheng Feng, and leaned back against his chest.

Cheng Feng looked at the man so close and softened his touch even more. His arms gradually ached, but his heart felt sweet, like it was soaked in honey.

Shang Xu, probably having gone too long without good sleep, soon had steady, deep breaths, clearly asleep.

Cheng Feng looked down at the peaceful sleeping face of the man in his arms, wrapped an arm around his waist, pressed his cheek against his shoulder, and whispered in a breathy voice:

    "My dear master, sweet dreams..."

He carefully laid Shang Xu flat beside him, quietly slipped out of bed, endured his own discomfort as he slowly moved to the door, and locked it.

After a quick wash in the bathroom, he climbed back into bed, carefully wrapped his arm around Shang Xu's waist, buried his head in the crook of his neck, and fell asleep to the rhythm of his steady breathing.

The next morning, when Cheng Feng woke up, the spot beside him was empty. On the nightstand sat a steaming breakfast, clearly just set down.

He got up, washed up in the bathroom, ate the breakfast clean, then sat on the bed, rubbing his phone screen, his brow slowly furrowing.

That car accident was definitely not an accident.

    His gut feeling was sharp.

Someone must be out to get him.

Though he didn't know who yet, anyone capable of orchestrating something like this had to have power and influence.

He'd made plenty of enemies over the years. It could be a relative of some foe looking for revenge.

During this time, using his accumulated connections, he'd contacted a few well-informed people.

Their ability to dig up info was sharper than professional paparazzi.

He'd already asked them to secretly investigate the passerby and the truck driver from that day.

He couldn't stay in this hospital anymore.

The people sent by the other side might already be lurking around.

Cheng Feng walked to the hospital room door and suddenly noticed two tall bodyguards at the end of the hall. His heart skipped a beat.

So Shang Xu had already arranged for guards. No wonder nothing had happened these past few days.

Had the other side lured the guards away last night, or had the guards only shown up today?

Either way, this place wasn't safe. Despite the doctor's repeated advice to stay for observation, Cheng Feng insisted on being discharged.

Back at Shang Xu's villa, Cheng Feng felt dizzy and weak. He collapsed onto the bed and fell asleep almost instantly.

When he woke up again, he opened his eyes to see Shang Xu sitting on a chair by the bed, watching him quietly.

Seeing him awake, Shang Xu frowned slightly, his tone a bit displeased: "Why didn't you stay in the hospital?"

Cheng Feng didn't want Shang Xu to worry about his problems.

He knew Shang Xu was already overwhelmed with his own affairs, exhausted from dealing with the broken engagement. He couldn't add to his burden.

Besides, all of this was just his speculation. There was no solid evidence that someone was truly trying to harm him.

So he forced a smile and said lightly, "I don't like the smell of the hospital. Home is more comfortable. I can't sleep in the ward."

Shang Xu didn't press further. Instead, he arranged for a family doctor to visit regularly.

Cheng Feng recuperated at home for nearly two months. His body gradually recovered, but the shadow in his heart grew heavier.

He heard that Shang Xu was going to marry Ye Ximo.

What could he do? And what could he do?

Over the years, he had worked hard and saved up over forty million in assets. But this fortune, huge in the eyes of ordinary people, was nothing more than pocket change to a wealthy family like Shang Xu's.

He couldn't help Shang Xu in any way. The gap between them had never been something money could bridge.

During this time, Cheng Feng developed severe insomnia, with heavy dark circles under his eyes, looking haggard.

Shang Shaohao saw him like this and grew worried: "What's wrong with you? Can't sleep? Should we have the doctor take another look?"

"I've already seen the doctor. It didn't help." Cheng Feng forced a smile, "The doctor said it's caused by too much psychological stress."

"Stress?" Shang Shaohao asked, totally confused. "Your career is on the rise, and you even got a scholarship for your studies. You're doing so well—what’s there to worry about? If I were half as awesome as you, my parents would lose their minds."

Cheng Feng smiled but said nothing. The finish line he'd fought tooth and nail to reach was merely the starting point that Shang Shaohao and others were born into.

What was such "excellence" worth, after all?

    Finally, the investigation yielded results.

A friend sent him a message:

The truck driver had indeed been drinking that day, but according to insiders, he could put away a case of beer without even flinching. Yet that day, he only had two bottles, which was nothing to him. He was definitely sober at the time of the incident, and crashing into Cheng Feng was no accident.

As for the passerby who happened to be there, surveillance footage showed that he had been lingering in that area for a long time before the accident, looking shady, clearly waiting for something on purpose.

Cheng Feng speculated that the passerby was either there to save him or to "finish the job." If not for another person passing by at the time, Cheng Feng would've been a goner.

Having confirmed that someone was deliberately trying to harm him, Cheng Feng kept his mouth shut and tracked down the truck driver's address on his own.

As he left, he felt like someone was following him. He pulled out a small mirror he carried and glanced behind him—sure enough, there was a shifty-looking man pretending to take a stroll, but he had appeared nearby several times already.

An idea hit Cheng Feng. He deliberately acted as if he hadn't noticed, continuing toward the driver's home while secretly keeping an eye on the man's movements.

Taking advantage of the moment when the man wasn't paying attention, he suddenly ducked into an alley, circled around behind him, and swiftly grabbed his wrist.

Without giving the man a chance to resist, he shoved him into his own car parked by the roadside, tied him up with rope he had prepared, and stuffed a cloth strip into his mouth. Then he started the engine and drove toward a remote, desolate area on the outskirts of the city.

Outside the car window, rows of abandoned buildings gradually came into view, with no one around—the perfect spot for a little chat.
