Chapter 115: CEO Shen Wants to Go to Work

Lu Lin lay in bed, blinking while staring at Shen Qingci.

His face was ice-cold, his brows devoid of any warmth, yet it was impossible to look away.

Sunlight streamed in through the window, falling on him, casting a soft halo around him, but it could never warm away the deep-seated aloofness.

He stood there, looking down on him like a jade statue untouched by the ordinary world.

Lu Lin’s heart skipped a beat.

    He obediently lay down again.

But his eyes were glued to Shen Qingci, unblinking.

His cheeks were slightly flushed from the fever, yet his eyes were unusually bright, as if to etch that face into his very bones, into the depths of his soul.

When Shen Qingci saw him lie down, he turned to get changed.

    He’d barely taken a step.

    His hand was suddenly grabbed.

The grip was fierce, as desperate as a drowning man clutching at a piece of driftwood.

Shen Qingci turned back, meeting Lu Lin’s urgent gaze.

    He followed his arm down.

The needle on the back of his hand had been yanked crooked, and blood started backflowing, a thin line of red traveling up the transparent tube.

    He frowned slightly.

Lu Lin followed his gaze, saw the startling red, and let go as if burned.

    Shen Qingci looked at him.

Lu Lin had already shrunk back under the covers, leaving only his eyes visible, watching him cautiously.

Those eyes held fear, pleading, and a deep, bone-deep attachment.

Shen Qingci withdrew his gaze and called for the doctor stationed at the door.

The doctor readjusted the needle and quietly withdrew.

    Shen Qingci turned again.

This time, Lu Lin didn’t reach out to grab him.

He just muttered in a hoarse, aggrieved voice:

    "Brother... can you not leave?"

    Shen Qingci’s steps paused slightly.

He had just turned his head when he heard Lu Lin’s choked, pitiful voice again:

    "Can you... stay with me..."

Shen Qingci looked down at the person in bed.

Lu Lin lay there, his eyes red and watery, tears shimmering in his beautiful eyes, but stubbornly refusing to fall.

He stared at him like a wounded beast, begging for warmth.

    Shen Qingci sighed silently.

He spoke, his voice still cold, but a little softer than usual:

    "I’m going to get changed."

Lu Lin murmured a soft "mm."

His voice was soft and whiny, laced with cautious obedience.

At the sight, Shen Qingci reached out and ruffled Lu Lin’s hair gently.

The movement was light, meant to comfort.

Then he turned and walked towards the dressing room.

    ---

In the dressing room, Shen Qingci shed his clothes and changed into a silk shirt.

The shirt was thin, with a subtle sheen, fitted his form, outlining a slim but upright silhouette.

He tucked the shirttail into his suit trousers, his movements elegant and composed.

His waist was faintly visible through the semi-sheer silk, and with each movement, the pale jade-like skin revealed lingering marks from the night before.

He emerged from the dressing room.

Lu Lin’s eyes were locked on him.

Watching him walk to the balcony, pick up the financial magazine on the table, sit in the sunlight, and start flipping through it.

He sat there, a meticulously painted classical portrait, unreal in its beauty, cold and distant.

    Lu Lin’s eyes were blazing.

His gaze lingered on Shen Qingci’s waist, on that faint outline, remembering the feel of it under his palm the night before, that soft waist trembling in his hands.

He felt his mouth go dry.

He licked his dry lips and spoke in a whining tone:

    "Brother... I’m a little thirsty."

Shen Qingci glanced up at him.

That look was indifferent, utterly emotionless.

He didn’t move, simply looking away, his thin lips parting slightly, his voice cold:

    "The water’s on the table."

    Lu Lin: "..."

He silently reached out to grab the cup on the bedside cabinet.

His fingers had just touched the rim of the cup when his hand slipped.

His whole body fell off the bed.

    A dull thud echoed.

Shen Qingci looked up and saw Lu Lin sprawled on the floor, tangled in the quilt, looking a complete mess.

He put down the magazine, grabbed his cane, and hurried over.

Seeing Lu Lin lying on the floor, he frowned and muttered, "What a klutz."

Then he bent down, helped Lu Lin up with clumsy movements, and covered him with the quilt again.

Shen Qingci’s gaze fell on the back of Lu Lin’s hand.

The IV needle had popped out during the fall.

On the back of his hand, a tiny bead of blood welled up, alarming to see.

    Shen Qingci’s frown deepened.

He was about to turn and call for the doctor when his hand was grabbed.

Lu Lin’s hand tightly gripped his wrist, while his other hand picked up the fallen needle and, without hesitation, jabbed it back into his own hand.

"Brother, I can do it myself."

Shen Qingci watched him—watched the needle slide precisely into the vein, watched the IV drip resume its steady rhythm.

His gaze lingered on Lu Lin’s face for a few seconds, then he looked away.

He picked up the water glass from the table and brought it to Lu Lin’s lips.

Lu Lin was taken aback for a moment.

Then he lowered his head and, using Shen Qingci’s hand as support, took small sips of water.

He looked utterly meek, like a puppy finally receiving its owner’s affection.

No one saw the quick, triumphant smirk flicker across his lowered eyes.

The smile came and went in a flash, so quickly it seemed like an illusion.

Worried that Lu Lin might fall off the bed again, Shen Qingci sat by the bed and didn’t leave.

He wanted to go to the office.

There were still a lot of paperwork to do and many things to organize there.

But... Lu Lin needed someone to look after him.

He looked at Lu Lin on the bed.

Lu Lin stared back at him, eyes bright, his gaze fixed on Shen Qingci’s chest.

Shen Qingci followed his gaze and looked down.

Through the silk shirt, he could just make out the marks left on his body from the previous night.

He raised his hand and gave Lu Lin a light swat on the head, then, under Lu Lin’s pouty gaze, he got up, leaning on his cane, and went to the dressing room.

He changed into a different shirt.

When he came out, Lu Lin was still watching him.

That gaze hadn’t left him even once, from start to finish.

Seeing that Lu Lin wasn’t planning on sleeping, Shen Qingci sat down by the bed again.

He looked at Lu Lin, his cold voice breaking the silence of the room:

"Yesterday, what did Lu Changgeng say to you?"

    Lu Lin froze.

The eyes that had been fixed on Shen Qingci slowly dropped.

His lashes fluttered slightly, casting tiny shadows beneath his eyes.

    A long time passed.

So long that the sunlight outside the window shifted angles, so long that Shen Qingci thought he wouldn’t say anything.

Finally, Lu Lin spoke quietly, his voice raspy:

    "He said..."

He paused, his Adam’s apple moving up and down.

"Big brother only has two years to live."
