Chapter 116: The Apocalyptic Breeding System Officially Opens
by 不语忧Chapter 116: Doomsday Breeding System Officially Opens
Before entering a dungeon alone, team members must log their entry with the team.
When Wu Yue registered for the "Shadow Play" dungeon, Jian Suiyu looked at her and asked, "You're going alone?"
Wu Yue nodded. "Yeah, I picked up this mission myself in the city—helping someone call back a spirit."
Wu Chong leaned in nosily. "What? Summoning a spirit?! And you didn't even invite me along?!"
Wu Yue scratched her head. "The first clear’s already been claimed, and it's only a B-rank dungeon. Plus, the cinnabar and talismans they give as rewards aren’t useful to you anyway."
"Who cares?" Wu Chong shrugged. "I’m bored anyway. I’ll go with you!"
Jian Suiyu was happy to have Wu Chong off his hands and waved them off with a quick approval, assigning them a shuttlecraft.
"Hurry back. The next round of World Boss battle is about to start."
Boarding the shuttle, they picked up Lin Qike and his wife Yu Wan, and the four set off for the "Shadow Play" dungeon.
Wu Chong was excited. "World Boss battle—I love that!"
Once initiated, the World Boss battle triggers waves of new mutant beasts across the alliance's world map—including World City and Central City.
Each kill nets one point. The top five teams with the highest scores unlock access to the new world map to fight the final World Boss.
The team that lands the killing blow takes control of the new zone and all the Boss’s loot drops.
Unlike large dungeons monitored by enforcers, the World Boss battle draws not only major teams, noble families, and corporate squads but also outlaw gangs. Every final showdown turns into a slaughterfest.
It’s a no-holds-barred fight to the death—a brutal bloodbath.
Lin Qike flinched and whispered to Wu Yue, "Master Wu, who is this guy?"
Wu Yue replied casually, "He’s with me. Wu Chong of the Wu Clan."
Wu Chong turned and gave a creepy smirk. "Heh heh."
Lin Qike looked even more terrified.
Wu Yue just sighed. "...Eh, let him have his fun."
As they entered the Shadow Play dungeon, the sound of ancient folk songs echoed around them—plucked strings, flower drums, and the clack of wooden blocks.
In the dim room, behind a vast white screen, an old puppeteer with a face hidden in shadow manipulated delicate shadow puppets with just a few strings, bringing them vividly to life.
A red-robed bride puppet threw herself into her mother’s arms, weeping over their farewell—the sorrow of parting lingering between mother and daughter.
Moonset met sunrise. A new day had come—it was the wedding day.
With tears streaming down her face, the bride was guided into the palanquin amid a crowd of well-wishers. The wailing suonas rose, accompanied by gongs and drums, as the procession carried her away.
But as they walked, everything suddenly changed.
At high noon, the wedding party found itself plunged into a forest so dark it swallowed all light.
The suonas cut out abruptly, replaced by an uncanny crinkling noise.
They say that when something supernatural appears, plastic begins to crinkle.
As the shadow puppet hut plunged into darkness, Lin Qike's voice trembled uncontrollably:
"Master Wu, Yu Wan had her soul stolen right here."
As soon as he finished speaking, a shrill, fox-like laughter echoed from inside the house, "Hahahahaha!"
The laughter sounded like a fox’s. Yu Wan, who had been soulless and dazed, suddenly snapped back to awareness, her eyes glowing with eerie green light as she lunged at Lin Qike beside her.
"Ah!"
Her black nails grew rapidly, raking a bloody chunk of flesh from Lin Qike’s arm.
Even with half his arm covered in blood, Lin Qike held onto Yu Wan tightly, clearly used to this by now.
"Tsk... Masters, this is where she always loses it during the play."
Wu Chong explained, "This play is about a fox spirit’s wedding. She lost her soul because it was lured away by the fox spirit.
Now she’s gone mad because the fox spirit’s brood have possessed her as a warning—don’t you dare take their Fox Bride away."
Lin Qike gritted his teeth in anger, "Fox Bride? That’s my wife!!
If it weren’t for these goddamn fox spirits, my wife wouldn’t be in this state—not quite human nor spirit."
Wu Chong, unusually serious, said, "Yue Yue, let me try calling her soul back first."
Wu Yue nodded, "Alright."
Wu Chong began chanting an incantation to summon spirits, dark aura wreathed around him as a tide of lost souls came rushing forward, howling and fighting to possess Yu Wan’s body.
For a moment, the little fox spirits possessing Yu Wan fled in fear, but under the relentless tearing of the countless souls, Yu Wan let out blood-curdling screams.
Lin Qike could only frantically bat away the souls trying to steal her body, "What... what do we do now?!"
Wu Chong turned his head stiffly, "I didn’t expect this many wandering spirits in this instance.
Your wife’s soul has been missing for too long, and she’s been possessed by fox spirits multiple times. Now, any angry ghost could jump right in."
Wu Yue had keen eyesight—even amidst the twisting, tangled souls, she could clearly distinguish them.
Her gaze swept quickly over the spirits, and she gasped in surprise, "Yu Wan isn’t among them!"
She immediately realized, "These are decoy spirits the fox tossed out. Yu Wan’s soul is still trapped by him."
Wu Chong snorted angrily, "What the fuck’s wrong with this dungeon boss? Isn’t this cheating the dungeon mechanics?
If the plot and setting have already been solved, why won’t he let her go?"
Wu Yue was also puzzled.
Suddenly, the countless souls retreated, and Yu Wan in Lin Qike’s arms went limp.
Mechanically, she slowly turned her head to look at Lin Qike, her voice shrill, "My lord."
The uncanny voice locked Lin Qike in place. He stared at Yu Wan, now inches away, as her mouth split into an impossible grin and the corners of her eyes narrowed until she morphed fully into a fox’s visage.
"My lord, if I look like this now… will you still love me?"
The sinister voice oozed over his skin like icy fingers, raising gooseflesh across Lin Qike’s body.
Wu Chong and Wu Yue exchanged a glance. To them, Yu Wan still looked the same—everything was merely an illusion visible only to Lin Qike's eyes.
Taking a deep breath, Lin Qike told himself,
It's fake,
All of this is fake,
Only Yu Wan is real.
He nodded firmly. "Yu Wan, we've stood by each other since the apocalypse began, all these years. No matter how you change, I will always love you, never leaving or abandoning you."
With a "whoosh," all the shadow puppets disappeared.
The room became bright as daylight.
"Congratulations to Lin Qike and Yu Wan for achieving 'Hearts and Wings United as One.'"
"True love moves heaven and earth. The post-apocalypse reproduction system is now officially open. From this day forward, all post-apocalypse humans can now have children.
Moreover, regardless of the parents' physical condition, all children born will be perfectly healthy."
"Alliance Announcement: The first round of reproductive matching for all eligible young adults in the alliance begins now!"
"Alliance Announcement: The alliance will award honors and rewards to those who have completed the reproduction system's requirements!"
When this series of announcements appeared, Wu Yue's eye twitched violently.
She and Wu Chong exchanged another glance, instantly realizing,
They might have just done something so stupid that every war criminal in the alliance would want their heads for it.
