Chapter 336: Shen Que Knows When Wu Yue Saw Through His Disguise
by 不语忧Chapter 336: When Wu Yue Figured Out Shen Que’s Secret Identity
Wu Xiuli had just sent the message when she turned around to find Wu Yue missing.
Seeing Wu Yue walking toward the house on her own, Wu Xiuli, worried she might get into trouble from drinking too much, quickly followed.
She soon realized that a drunk Wu Yue was surprisingly well-behaved, mumbling to herself, "I'm going back to sleep," as she headed to her own room.
Wu Xiuli watched as Wu Yue opened the door and stepped inside, only to suddenly go on high alert, staring into the room.
Wu Xiuli smirked. "Shen Que, you’ve got a lot of nerve."
Wu Yue, confused, looked at the person who had suddenly appeared in her room and asked, "Who are you?"
Shen Que’s expression instantly darkened as he pulled Wu Yue into his arms, his gaze turned dangerous as he looked at Wu Xiuli. "What did you do to her?"
Wu Xiuli knew better than to push it—after all, as long as Shen Que dared to show up, he wasn’t getting out of a beating from the Jiang family.
She smiled. "I didn’t do anything. Wu Yue just drank a bit too much.
The housekeeper the Jiang family sent is an SS+-rank expert. Ten minutes is the best I can do for you."
Shen Que slammed the door shut without another word.
Wu Yue was still tilting her head back, asking, "Who are you? Get out of my room. I want to sleep."
Shen Que looked down at her. "You’ve been drinking? What did you drink?"
Wu Yue started listing them off on her fingers. "Beer, champagne, vodka, whiskey..."
Seeing her fumble, Shen Que leaned down and kissed her.
Wu Yue blinked dazedly as Shen Que pulled away with a smirk. "Remember who I am now?"
Wu Yue nodded. "Mm, you’re Shen Que."
This was the first time Shen Que had seen Wu Yue so obedient—unexpectedly cute like this, it made him want to keep her all to himself.
He lifted her up, holding her face-to-face, and locked eyes with her, dead serious.
"Wu Yue, I’ve never once thought about using you—never planned to use you for dungeon clears. Never.
Wu Xiuli was right. I would never risk exposing my identity to save someone. I’d never actively add a woman’s contact, let alone humor Jian Suiyu’s demands to carry teammates.
With Wu Chong around, there’s no chance I’d carry a girl to the med bay, or camp outside for hours. I’ve liked you for a long time.
You glow so damn bright—I couldn’t look away. I was too curious about you.
When I refused others’ attempts to recruit you, it wasn’t because I, as Blaze’s captain, thought I was above you. We’re equals. I have no right to decide your future.
If they wanted you on their team, they should’ve come to you properly."
Wu Yue nodded obediently. "Oh, so you didn’t stop them from approaching me?"
Shen Que froze. "...I did."
Wu Yue blinked. Shen Que buried his face in her neck, muttered bitterly. "I really am a despicable person."
Wu Yue reached up and played with his hair. "You’re a good person. And you’re seriously gorgeous."
Shen Que held Wu Yue tightly, filled with regret. He shouldn't have let her return to the Jiang family—he wanted to take her back to Blaze right now.
Wu Yue was completely dazed, and with Shen Que silent, the two of them remained that way in quiet stillness.
In the dimly lit room, the atmosphere was peaceful and intimate.
Suddenly, Shen Que understood what Jiang Cheng had meant—he had already resolved to be his wife’s lifelong soulmate.
Wu Yue, exhausted from the day, wrapped her arms around Shen Que’s neck and rested her head on his shoulder, murmuring sleepily, "I'm sleepy."
Sensing the elite fighters from the Jiang family closing in from all directions, Shen Que lifted Wu Yue onto the bed, kissing her forehead and cheeks.
"Sleep, baby."
After a lingering gaze at her, he tucked her in and made to leave.
Wu Yue suddenly reached out and grabbed him. "Where are you going?"
Shen Que replied, "Your father and brother are here. I have to answer to them."
Wu Yue protested, "You're not going anywhere. It's time to sleep."
Shen Que couldn't force himself to break free from her grip—he simply couldn't bear to. Turning back, he knelt beside her.
With utmost solemnity, he told her, "Just wait for me. Next time, I’ll come through the Jiang family’s front gate properly and take you away."
Wu Yue snapped, "I said, sleep."
Shen Que let out a heavy breath. If he actually climbed into this bed tonight, the Jiang family would never let him see Wu Yue again in this lifetime.
He had to say something to distract her.
Then, a question that had long gnawed at him came to mind:
"Yue Yue, when did you realize I was Noah Squire?"
The Jiang family members were getting closer, and Wu Xiuli’s raised voice in the hallway served as a warning.
The surroundings grew noisy, but he still clearly heard Wu Yue say:
"In Haimine Town. You were close, trying to kill me—that’s when I recognized you."
So it was... Haimine Town. No wonder Wu Yue had reacted so oddly there. She had even counted down for him when the masked assailants’ system was about to end.
She had known all along—letting him save face.
In her eyes, he must have seemed pathetic back then.
Unable to resist, Shen Que asked, "Why didn’t you tell me, even when I asked you several times?"
Wu Yue’s haze of alcohol was lifting, her mind clearing. The estate’s spotlights blazed to life outside, and when she looked at Shen Que, the earlier drowsiness of intoxication was gone.
Sitting up, she pulled him closer. Feeling her clarity return, Shen Que let himself be drawn in.
Shen Que murmured, "You’re already sober? I have to go—"
"Shen Que," Wu Yue interrupted, "because that was your darkest hour. Every time I think back, I remember the look in your eyes when I was leaving—aching with longing and deep despair."
I could never forgive myself for pretending to be oblivious to everything under those circumstances, letting you return to the imperial court alone.
If given another chance, if everything could start over,
I would have recognized you the moment we met in Haimin Town, unhesitatingly revealed who you were, and stood by your side to fight alongside you.
I’m so profoundly relieved that, in the end, I finally found you, that I didn’t lose you."
Even as the footsteps outside grew closer, Shen Que simply held Wu Yue's gaze.
A gaze,
in the realm of human spirit,
is a chaste meeting of souls.
