Fu Yining stood in front of the counter.

"Hi, was there a long-haired calico cat here earlier?"

The staff member, having only met her once months ago, had forgotten her.

"You mean Mimi?"

"Yes."

"Mimi, well..."

"What's wrong with it?" Fu Yining held her breath nervously.

The staff member pointed toward a row of shelves and said, "Why don’t you check over there? I haven’t seen Mimi around; it might still be sleeping there."

"Huh?"

The staff member bent down and whispered, "It’s freezing outside. I snuck its little pad in without the boss noticing. Don’t tell anyone, okay?"

With that, she gave them a playful wink.

"No worries, we won’t."

Fu Yining smiled and nodded, then carefully guided Song Qingyu toward the shelves.

To avoid waking the kitten, she stayed quiet.

A small space under the toiletries shelf had been cleared, with a bright orange plush pad placed there.

Fu Yining crouched down to look but didn’t see the kitten.

"Doesn’t look like it’s here."

"Mom, I’ll check over there." Song Qingyu walked to the other side of the shelf to help search for the kitten.

"Mimi? Where are you?"

Fu Yining called softly, waving the buns in her hand to lure it out.

"Mimi, I’ve got something yummy for you. Come on out!"

"Meow?"

Just then, a soft meow came from above her.

She looked up to see a round, furry head peering at her curiously: "Meow?"

"Mimi, what are you doing up there!"

Fu Yining was thrilled and surprised, reaching out to scoop up the little creature.

"Mom, did you find her?"

"Yes, she’s here!"

The kitten sniffed Fu Yining and seemed to remember her as the kind soul who’d fed it before, nuzzling her calf.

"Meow, meow!"

"Are you hungry? Want some buns?"

"Meow!"

The kitten licked its mouth and sat down obediently.

It knew that if it waited patiently, delicious food would soon come its way.

Song Qingyu stood nearby, her eyes turning into heart shapes, her voice softening uncontrollably, "Mom, it's so cute and beautiful!"

"Absolutely!"

Fu Yining nodded vigorously.

She was about to take out the fragrant meat-filled buns when her gaze accidentally fell on the kitten's bulging belly.

"Mimi, have you already eaten breakfast?"

"Meow?"

"The buns are all yours, but let's save them for later, okay?"

"Meow!"

Seeing her re-tie the half-opened bag, the kitten anxiously extended its tiny paw to reach for the contents inside.

"Hey, Mimi, take it easy!"

Fu Yining couldn't help but wonder.

Has it really eaten? But its belly looks...

Suddenly, a startling thought crossed her mind: Could the kitten be... pregnant?

"Qingyu, come take a look!"

"What?"

Fu Yining took out the buns for the kitten to enjoy.

While the kitten was engrossed in the aroma of the food, she gestured near its belly, "Look, doesn't its belly seem a bit abnormally large?"

Song Qingyu bent down slightly, looked carefully, and replied, "It does seem a bit big."

Seeing the kitten eat so eagerly, it didn't seem like it was already full.

Fu Yining looked up and met her gaze. Song Qingyu then turned and walked towards the counter.

A short while later, she returned.

"Mom, I asked the staff member, and she said Mimi hasn't been adopted yet. She's just helping to take care of it."

Fu Yining nodded in agreement.

When the kitten finished eating and sat on the ground licking its paws and washing its face, she cleaned up the trash on the ground and then gently picked the kitten up.

The kitten knew she meant no harm and let her hold it in her arms without any struggle. It purred contentedly as it licked its paws.

She's so well-behaved!

Fu Yining remarked.

"Qingyu, ready to go?"

"Sure."

The staff member saw them carrying the kitten and seemed to have an idea.

"Are you thinking of adopting Mimi?"

"Yes, but does she look pregnant?"

"I was thinking the same thing."

"No worries, we'll take her to the vet soon."

Fu Yining double-checked with the staff member that the kitten was still a stray, then patted the kitten's head, promising, "We'll take great care of Mimi, with plenty of canned and freeze-dried food!"

The staff member also looked very happy: "That's wonderful! Mimi finally has a home! Someone else wanted to adopt Mimi before, but she didn't go with them. It seems she likes you more!"

"Look at her now, so calm, nothing like when a couple tried to take her two months ago."

Fu Yining gently squeezed her soft, cool paw pads and asked softly, "Little one, have you been waiting for me?"

"Meow?"

"If that's the case, I'll take it as a yes?"

Song Qingyu watched the tender exchange between the two, smiling warmly like the staff member.

"We'll take Mimi now, thanks for looking after her!"

The staff member shook her head and told the kitten, "Mimi, be good in your new home, and listen to your new owner!"

"Meow!"

The kitten called out, as if responding to her.

Fu Yining thanked the staff member once more and left with the kitten.

Song Qingyu walked alongside her and suggested, "Mom, Chen Yujia's boyfriend is a vet, why don't we take Mimi to him?"

"Sounds good."

"I know where it is, I'll take you there."

Ten minutes later, the two and the cat arrived at the pet hospital smoothly.

Fu Yining told Chen Yujia about this in the car, and Chen Yujia immediately went to greet her boyfriend.

Dr. Chen, who was quite handsome, gently felt the kitten's belly and said, "Hmm, it does seem like she's pregnant with kittens, but it's not the right season for that."

"Come in for a check-up first."

The kitten behaved very well, lying still for the examination, letting others flip her around without fuss.

After looking at the images on the screen, Dr. Chen confirmed, "She's pregnant, and the kittens are pretty big, so she should be due soon."

"How many are there?"

After counting, he said, "There are about five. The images are overlapping and unclear, but it looks like five."

"Let me check her over."

"Okay."

Fu Yining gently stroked the kitten's head, her heart aching.

She should've picked her up sooner!

"She's perfectly healthy, just a case of ear mites. I'll take care of that now."

"Thanks so much, Dr. Chen!"

"You're welcome!"

Since the kitten was so well-behaved, the generous Dr. Chen even threw in a free grooming kit.

Fu Yining and Song Qingyu waited outside, and a nurse approached with a form and asked what the kitten's name would be.

"We'll name her Fu Xiaomi."

"Fu Xiaomi?"

Song Qingyu glanced at her, and Fu Yining gave a firm nod.

"Yes, the daughter I found is taking my last name!"
