Chapter 63 Here to Fulfill My Promise
by 山有茫庭Chapter 63: Keeping My Promise
After Cong Gaoxuan’s persuasive talk that night, Boss Zhao was instantly elevated to the status of a model devoted husband.
Upon hearing the news, Fu Cheng even called specifically to tease him.
“Are you jealous?” Zhao Louyue asked.
Fu Cheng hung up.
Jiang Shen, while replying to Song Lin’s messages, simply shook his head.
A day later, Zhao Louyue accompanied Jiang Shen to have his cast removed.
His recovery was progressing well. Aside from a slight twinge when putting weight on his left foot, walking short distances slowly was no problem.
“Make sure not to run or jump,” the doctor warned. “Let’s aim for a complete recovery in one go.”
Zhao Louyue nodded enthusiastically. “You’re absolutely right!”
After leaving the hospital and settling into the car, Jiang Shen said, “Once I’m a bit better, I need to take a trip to Qing City.”
“For the Lin'an Xu project inspection?”
“Yes,” Jiang Shen nodded. “For a chain real estate project, the initial three locations absolutely must not fail.”
Zhao Louyue was very supportive of Jiang Shen’s career and offered no further comment.
After his physical recovery, Jiang Shen first returned to the Jiang residence.
Tian Lu had initially looked worried, but upon seeing Jiang Shen’s healthy complexion, she quickly relaxed.
The mother and son chatted for a while, with Jiang Shen mostly listening.
Tian Lu’s temperament had visibly softened—her pursuit of “perfection” and “propriety” had faded significantly, and she even managed to say a few good words about Jiang Mao in front of Jiang Shen.
Jiang Mao happened to pass by and, feeling both flattered and nervous, glanced anxiously at Jiang Shen.
Jiang Shen found it amusing; he didn’t mind at all.
Later, Tian Lu left to meet her friends, while Jiang Mao paced back and forth several times in the living room.
Jiang Shen, leaning back on the sofa, finally stopped him as he passed by again. “What’s going on?”
Jiang Mao hesitantly pulled out a box from behind his back.
Jiang Shen figured it out. “For me?”
“Yes.”
Jiang Shen reached out, and Jiang Mao immediately handed it over.
Inside was a pair of cufflinks from a luxury brand’s latest release—Jiang Shen had glimpsed them on Zhao Louyue’s tablet a couple of days earlier. The ones Jiang Mao gifted were a deep blue, with a smooth finish, understated and refined.
“Thank you, I really like them,” Jiang Shen said.
Jiang Shen had learned to accept kindness from others, understanding that often the other person also needed this as a way to ease their own emotional burdens.
Truthfully, Jiang Shen had never felt that Jiang Mao had taken anything from him.
What happened back then was nobody's fault.
Jiang Shen had dinner with Tian Lu before leaving.
He had grown quite accustomed to having Zhao Louyue sleep beside him.
As deep autumn passed and harsh winter arrived, Jiang Shen switched to a heavier coat.
He had always been sensitive to the cold, having been sick often as a child. What he'd loved most was bundling up tightly and sitting by the fire.
Zhao Louyue made up for the unfulfilled expectation of that warmth.
How could one person be so inherently warm?
That Tuesday, Jiang Shen received an invitation to an upscale business banquet. One of the organizers was Fu Yuanrui’s father, who had personally written the invitation, with sincere apologies for not having found the right opportunity to visit earlier, promising a car would be sent to pick him up.
Jiang Shen didn’t refuse.
“I received an invitation too. You go ahead first,” Zhao Louyue said, tinkering with something. “Fu Heyu probably wants to speak with you alone.”
Fu Heyu was Fu Yuanrui’s father. It was said that he had recently replaced Duan Chaosheng’s father as vice president of the Lindu Chamber of Commerce.
“Mm,” Jiang Shen replied, moving closer only to realize Zhao Louyue was examining the cufflinks Jiang Mao had given him.
Ah, he’d forgotten to mention it.
Zhao Louyue looked up, clearly holding back his feelings. “Who gave these to you?”
“Jiang Mao.”
Zhao Louyue paused, then neatly closed the box and set it back on the table. “Oh, our little brother.”
Jiang Shen couldn’t help but laugh. “Zhao Louyue, you don’t need to be so… wary. I have basic loyalty in relationships, and I don’t have that many admirers.”
Zhao Louyue believed the first statement, but as for the second… well, it was better left unsaid.
On Wednesday afternoon, Fu Heyu’s car arrived at the company.
Jiang Shen spotted it immediately when he went downstairs.
Fu Heyu was personally waiting at the entrance. The banquet was set to start at 6 p.m., but he had prepared a room with tea and a table laden with gifts in advance—everything from fine wine and ginseng to antique collectibles, all carefully selected.
“Mr. Jiang, let’s not stand on ceremony. Thank you for saving Yuanrui! Whatever the Fu family does or gives is only right.”
Jiang Shen couldn't refuse.
The two chatted about everything from Fu Yuanrui to business matters. When the topic turned to the “Lin'an Xu” property project, Fu Heyu implied meaningfully, “Mr. Jiang, you’re sharp, and your track record in recent years speaks for itself. Just proceed with confidence. If you run into any difficulties, come to me.”
Jiang Shen accepted the offer. “Thank you, Vice President.”
Guests began arriving in succession. Standing on the third floor, they had a clear view through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The moment Jiang Shen spotted Qin Zhumiao, his pupils contracted.
Fu Heyu noticed it too, his tone turning sharp. “He actually dares to show up.”
Qin Zhumiao was the type who seemed to invite trouble. Knowing full well he had offended the Fu family, he still flaunted himself openly. Unless you dealt with him permanently, he’d keep popping up just to annoy you.
"The Qin family has deep roots and has been very cautious in their business dealings over the years. Even if their underhanded methods attract gossip, they never leave behind tangible evidence."
Jiang Shen nodded.
Qin Zhumiao was chatting with a few businessmen when, suddenly, he seemed to sense something and lifted his gaze.
When his eyes met Jiang Shen's, Qin Zhumiao raised his glass slightly.
Jiang Shen kept a straight face. Shortly after, Zhao Louyue and Fu Cheng entered through the main door.
Zhao Louyue was very conspicuous. Even without any bias, Jiang Shen felt the man’s aura was as overwhelming as a mountain crashing down.
Zhao Louyue had been speaking to Fu Cheng with one hand in his pocket when he suddenly paused. Following his gaze, Jiang Shen spotted Qin Zhumiao.
Jiang Shen recalled Zhao Louyue’s careless remark: "No matter the time or place, if I see Qin Zhumiao, I’ll go at him." But surely, one couldn’t be that impulsive...
Zhao Louyue began taking off his suit jacket.
Jiang Shen’s eye twitched wildly.
But it was already too late.
"Take this," Zhao Louyue handed his jacket to Fu Cheng.
Fu Cheng was not one to ignore the situation's gravity, but after only half a second of hesitation, he took the jacket and calmly replied, "Don't go too far."
Seeing Zhao Louyue march toward him, Qin Zhumiao thought, *How dare he?*
Yet Zhao Louyue’s face was detached, calm, yet arrogantly provocative. Step by step, he weaved through the long tables and chairs, even rolling his wrist midway.
In that instant, Qin Zhumiao knew with absolute certainty: Zhao Louyue was serious.
"Hey? President Qin?"
Qin Zhumiao set down his glass and swiftly turned to flee.
Zhao Louyue quickened his pace behind him.
They rushed toward the direction of the back garden. Unable to see them anymore, Jiang Shen dashed after them.
The guests at today’s event had undergone strict screening, and security wasn't allowed into the main area. Even if Qin Zhumiao called for help now, it would be too late. Worse still, he didn’t want to lose face in front of others, so he instinctively fled toward a less crowded area like the back garden.
However, Zhao Louyue caught up with him in the hallway.
A punch Qin Zhumiao threw backward was violently caught, and for a moment, he couldn’t break free!
Seizing the opportunity, Zhao Louyue pulled and twisted, slamming Qin Zhumiao against the wall. With a smirk that didn't reach his eyes, he said, "What a coincidence, President Qin. I’m here to fulfill my promise."
