Chapter 158: A Great Debt of Gratitude
by 兔丸子Chapter 158: A Great Debt of Gratitude
Though she had comforted her daughter that dreams were not to be taken seriously, Lady Jinghai immediately sent Aunt Wu to investigate the scene where the traffickers were initially captured after calming her down.
The residence, having been sealed off and taken over by the government after the incident, remained untouched, preserving its original layout.
Upon arrival, Aunt Wu made some inquiries and proceeded to inspect the premises. The more she observed, the more astonished she became.
The arrangement of the residence was an exact replica of what Miss had described in her dream, down to the color and inscriptions on the two lanterns hanging there!
If it weren't for her certainty that Miss had never visited this place, she would have suspected that Eldest Miss Xiao was deliberately deceiving her!
Aunt Wu increasingly felt that Xiao Feiyan's dream was far from ordinary, likely involving supernatural elements. She hurried back home to recount her findings to Lady Jinghai.
Lady Jinghai was equally stunned. How could such a coincidence exist in this world!
Even though she usually dismissed the existence of ghosts and deities, she couldn't help but waver now, wondering if her daughter had been possessed by malevolent spirits, leading to such a vivid dream.
However, after subtly probing her daughter about the details of that day, Lady Jinghai quickly changed her mind.
She couldn't shake the feeling that this Eldest Miss Su seemed to know that her daughter would be in danger that day.
Otherwise, why would she have specifically accompanied her daughter to the market, secretly arranged for their protection, and then deliberately taken her to witness the execution of those villains?
Was it possible that she had intentionally spared her daughter from the calamity that should have befallen her?
As these thoughts crossed her mind, Lady Jinghai took a deep breath, no longer viewing her daughter's experience as merely a dream, but rather akin to a journey through past and present lives.
If that were true, when Miss Su brought Feiyan to the execution grounds that day, it wasn't just to watch the execution; it was to show her her enemies!
That would make Miss Su a great benefactor to Feiyan!
Unable to sit still any longer, Lady Jinghai didn't inform her daughter but instead headed straight for the Su residence alone.
When Su Youyue learned that Lady Jinghai had arrived, she was slightly surprised but promptly instructed her servants to welcome her guest.
"Lady Jinghai," she greeted warmly.
Lady Jinghai scrutinized Su Youyue's face more intently than during their first meeting, causing Su Youyue to feel somewhat perplexed.
"Lady Jinghai?"
Lady Jinghai's behavior was indeed peculiar. She had left without a word on her previous visit and now came without speaking.
Snapping out of her reverie at Su Youyue's questioning tone, Lady Jinghai acknowledged her presence and spoke softly, "Moon, Feiyan has recovered significantly over the past few days, but I've come today to ask you something."
"Please, Lady Jinghai, ask away," Su Youyue replied, adopting a posture of attentive listening.
Lady Jinghai began recounting Xiao Feiyan's dream, observing Su Youyue's facial expressions as she spoke, seemingly trying to discern something.
To her surprise, during the days Xiao Feiyan was unconscious, she truly dreamed about events from her past life.
For a moment, Su Youyue fell silent.
As Chunya and Jin'er entered to serve tea, she waited until they placed the cups down before gesturing for them to leave.
Seeing this, Lady Jinghai also dismissed her own maidservant and maid.
"Lady Jinghai, to be honest, Feiyan's dream is one I've also experienced."
Su Youyue spoke slowly, pouring a cup of tea for Lady Jinghai herself.
Lady Jinghai, however, had no interest in the tea. Her eyes were fixed on Su Youyue with rapt attention upon hearing that she too had dreamt of the same dream.
"It was because of this dream that I couldn't help but worry about Feiyan's safety, unsure if it was real or not. As the plum blossom banquet approached, I decided to befriend Feiyan and help her avoid this misfortune."
With her suspicions confirmed, Lady Jinghai's breathing grew lighter, as if afraid to disturb Su Youyue.
But then, Su Youyue let out a bitter laugh. "However, my dream contained more details than Feiyan's. Seeing the viciousness of those traffickers, I didn't have Feiyan skip the plum blossom banquet. Instead, I planned to catch these traffickers while ensuring her safety."
"In hindsight, I admit my judgment wasn't thorough enough, nearly allowing Feiyan to suffer the same fate as in my dream and putting myself at risk as well."
In response to Lady Jinghai's inquiries, Su Youyue naturally wouldn't reveal anything about reincarnation, only using dreams as an explanation.
Given the inexplicable nature of Xiao Feiyan's dream, this explanation was easier for Lady Jinghai to accept.
Indeed, Lady Jinghai showed no signs of suspicion. After much contemplation, she sighed, "You were right. If Feiyan hadn't gone that day, these evildoers might not have been caught so soon, sparing countless innocent people from their cruelty."
"You had no prior relationship with Feiyan, yet you thought to help her. Our Hou Mansion is immensely grateful. Regardless, you saved Feiyan's life, making you our benefactor!"
Reflecting on the situation Eldest Miss Su faced, she realized that her actions were already a commendable approach.
Had she told her family about the dream, they might not have believed her, possibly avoiding the plum blossom banquet, but doing so would have prevented the traffickers from appearing.
Su Youyue echoed her sentiment with a sigh. "No one would bear to see Feiyan fall into the hands of such people. Even if they had dreamt of it, they would certainly strive to protect Feiyan's safety."
Hearing this, Lady Jinghai disagreed. "It's all thanks to your kind heart, Moon. Others might have deemed it none of their concern and avoided getting involved in trouble."
She took hold of Su Youyue's hand. "Moon, I don't know how to express my gratitude for your great kindness to Feiyan..."
Relieved that Lady Jinghai believed her explanation, Su Youyue had never sought any reward for saving Xiao Feiyan. She was simply grateful not to arouse suspicion.
"Lady Jinghai, you're too kind. I'm already delighted to have been able to assist Feiyan."
Fearing that Lady Jinghai would continue expressing her gratitude, which made Su Youyue uncomfortable, she quickly asked, "Lady Jinghai, but I do have a question. When you came to our residence the other day, was there another matter you needed to attend to?"
Lady Jinghai's train of thought was indeed redirected. "Speaking of which, I almost forgot to tell you. That day, the young lady from the Qin family came to the Hou Mansion and mentioned matters concerning your residence...I feared you might have encountered some scheme, so I came to check on you. Unexpectedly, I found you handling everything yourself upon my arrival, so I returned to take care of Feiyan."
Su Youyue was slightly taken aback, realizing that Lady Jinghai had actually intended to assist her on that day.
Thinking of Qin Yumei again, she sneered inwardly.
In her previous life, this sister-in-law of hers was just like Lu Cheng, a dog that could not change its habit of eating feces; indeed, she had the same demeanor from her days in the boudoir to her later life as a married woman, always overthinking, envious, constantly scheming with petty tricks, and fond of making complaints!
