Chapter 157 – Oh No, Tonight Spells Disaster
by AdminChapter 157 - Oh No, Tonight Spells Disaster
"Sigh, there's no other choice. Let's treat it as a last-ditch effort. I trust Octopus and Boss Shen," the leader of TVB clenched his fists in anxiety.
He knew what the news tape delivered by Secretary Shen represented – it was the most explosive and hard-hitting exclusive news across all of Hong Kong!
Gu Shaoqian's fame had been hyped up by the Hong Kong media just a few days ago, with the Governor even planning to confer him with a live broadcast of the Medal of Honour for Good Conduct.
But now, it turned out that all of it was fake!
If the citizens of Hong Kong, who admired and supported Gu Shaoqian for his admirable virtues of respecting the elderly and caring for the young, found out that they had been deceived, how furious would they be?
These wealthy individuals would go to any lengths to achieve their goals. Despite already possessing resources that 90% of the population could only dream of, they still resorted to exploiting the kindness of ordinary people for their own public image?
Young Master Gu from the elite family was truly despicable and shameless! The director of TVB couldn't help but seethe with anger just thinking about it.
Not only was the director of TVB enraged, but the citizens of Hong Kong, who had been deceived by Gu Shaoqian's charitable act, were also livid. Everyone switched their TV channels to TVB in a frenzy, eager to uncover the truth.
Upon seeing that the so-called nursing home was better than anyone else's accommodations, with each old man living in a separate villa and medical staff on standby at every villa, their anger intensified.
The villa was surrounded by mountains, water, and a pond, perfect for fishing, hunting, and hosting parties. The anger of the Hong Kong citizens instantly erupted.
They were still struggling to earn a meager salary of two or three thousand, fretting over providing for their families and securing a roof over their heads.
Yet, Young Master Du had deceived their kindness, claiming he was donating money to an elderly care home for destitute seniors, wishing for them to live out their twilight years in comfort. Instead, the funds were allocated to an ultra-luxurious retirement home, inhabited by the elite of society.
This deception and stark contrast in reality fueled the citizens' fury. How could they not be enraged?
As for assisting the elderly who had fainted, it turned out to be an utter fabrication. The old man had bodyguards and medical staff, belonging to a wealthy family; why would he need Gu Shaoqian's charity?
Gu Shaoqian had played the Hong Kong citizens for fools. The more they had initially supported him, the more they now despised him.
Some even rushed to the scene, pelting Gu Shaoqian and the second wife with "rotten eggs and decaying vegetables." The Governor, who was supposed to confer an honor on Gu Shaoqian, also suffered collateral damage.
"Damn your mother, Young Master Du, get out of Hong Kong!"
"You second wife, you're just a laundry board, giving birth to a useless Young Master Du."
Amidst the TV broadcast of the citizens' furious curses, Jian Yao casually covered Shen Qing's ears. Wanting to hear if the insults could get any worse, Shen Qing hesitated, unsure whether to pretend innocence or remove Brother Yao's hand to continue listening to the citizens lambaste Gu Shaoqian and his mother.
After a moment of silence, Shen Qing decided not to pretend anymore. "Brother Yao, let go of my ear. I enjoy listening to them cursing my enemies."
Jian Yao gazed down at her with a cold expression.
"I can join in and curse too," Shen Qing added.
Was there anything more satisfying in this world than seeing your enemy suffer, being despised and vilified by the entire world? If so, it would be even better to join in with everyone else to curse your enemy.
Don't blame Shen Qing for lacking morals; morals were reserved for the good. What morals should one have towards villains? Besides, this was all self-inflicted by Gu Shaoqian and his ilk – they had dug their own graves.
As Shen Qing cursed them as 'scumbags,' her eyes sparkled with delight and her face lit up with a smile. Jian Yao, feeling a mix of helplessness and indulgence, followed suit with a curse of his own.
"Woah." Shen Qing instantly threw herself into Jian Yao's arms. "Brother Yao, you're awesome."
The joy of having a friend you liked cursing your enemies on your behalf was unparalleled, a bliss that made her feel as if she could soar into the sky. Brother Dragon, equally thrilled, knew the moment Octopus Card exposed Gu Shaoqian that Shen Qing was behind the whole scheme.
"I'll tell you why I spoil her so much. It's because she always acts stealthily just when I'm about to get rid of someone," Brother Dragon listened to the Great Compassion Mantra, his fingers tracing the Buddhist beads, a smile reaching the corners of his lips, almost in alignment with the sun. "Shen Qing truly is my treasure."
"My darling," Brother Dragon rose from his cushion, imbued with a sense of purpose, addressing his subordinates. "Come on, let's go kick them while they're down."
Brother Dragon's plan to add insult to injury was ruthless. He arranged ten vehicles to surround Gu Shaoqian and the Second Madam from all directions.
Gu Shaoqian and the Second Madam, who had initially intended to hide in their car and rush back to their hilltop villa, were now trapped on a road in Central Hong Kong.
Though Hong Kong was economically prosperous, its island area was limited, resulting in most of its main streets being dual-lane roads.
During normal days in the 70s, traffic wouldn't have seemed congested. However, when someone deliberately blocked your path, it was a different story. Thus, Gu Shaoqian and the Second Madam's luxury cars were stuck in the middle of the two-lane road.
"Go smash those cars for me," the Second Madam fumed. "What kind of shabby vehicles do they think they are, daring to share the same road as my car?"
The bodyguards received their orders and went to wreck the cars. If ordinary Hong Kong citizens had been involved, they would have surely given way to avoid trouble, clearing a path for Gu Shaoqian and the Second Madam.
But the cars and people blocking the street were all part of Brother Dragon's meticulous plan. The rugged minivan occupants were seasoned fighters. When they clashed with Gu Shaoqian's bodyguards, neither side backed down. In this showdown, brute force and ruthlessness were the deciding factors.
In this regard, Brother Dragon, the former gang leader, emerged victorious once again.
Brother Dragon arrived, clutching a basket of raw eggs with which he began pelting the vehicle. Upon seeing this, those who had caught up also rushed forward to continue the barrage of 'stinking eggs' and 'rotten vegetables.'
In the span of over a decade as a scion of a wealthy family, Gu Shaoqian had never faced such humiliation and disgrace. Even when she was disheartened and fled to Country Chao, she still led a life above others, nothing like now where she has become a pariah, despised and shunned by all.
The pursuing journalists were equally frenzied. After all, the elite were usually unapproachable. Who had ever witnessed such an explosive scene of a high society figure being cornered on the street and pelted with rotten eggs?
When Brother Dragon saw the journalists arriving, he didn't try to hide anything; instead, he intensified his actions even more.
Upon seeing the live broadcast on television, Shen Qing couldn't help but widen her eyes as she witnessed Brother Dragon standing atop a luxurious car with a basket of raw eggs, brazenly throwing them at Gu Shaoqian and Madam Second in a fit of arrogance.
"I should have joined in and thrown rotten eggs myself if I had known."
Jian Yao didn't respond verbally, but his eyes, fixated on the television screen, betrayed a hint of curiosity.
The spectacle lasted until noon, leaving Shen Qing thoroughly satisfied.
So delighted was she that she even had an extra bowl of rice at lunch, energizing herself for the trip to the small fishing village. Jian Yao didn't accompany her; after seeing Shen Qing off, he changed into his motorcycle gear and rode off in a direction entirely different from hers.
Meanwhile, at the Gu household, Gu Shaoqian and Second Aunt entered the house, drenched in egg yolks and vegetable leaves.
The moment Gu Chengfu, under the protection of his bodyguards, safely returned to the hilltop villa, he caught sight of the two in their disheveled state. A hint of disdain and disgust flashed across his eyes.
He had initially intended to scold Gu Shaoqian and Second Grandpa for their incompetence. However, at the sight of their stench, he found it repulsive, losing all desire to even berate them.
"Brilliant! Today might just be the most eventful day Hong Kong has seen in a century," Brother Dragon applauded as he walked in from outside. Gazing at the pathetic figures of Gu Shaoqian and Second Grandpa, he burst into laughter. "Dad, seeing them in such an embarrassing state doesn't seem to please you?"
"Shut up!" Gu Chengfu's voice, laced with fury, echoed throughout the entire hilltop villa. "Look at what you've turned into today!"
Gu Chengfu smacked the newspaper lying on the coffee table. "Your antics have made headlines across all of Hong Kong."
With an air of nonchalance, Brother Dragon strolled over and snatched the newspaper from the table.
Hmm, Hong Kong paparazzi sure know how to come up with catchy headlines these days. #EggBoy's Assassination Attempt All Day Long, Illegitimate Son HiPi and His Mother Poison Jr.#
Brother Dragon raised an eyebrow. "These reporters captured me looking quite dashing, I must say."
He didn't mind being labeled as an illegitimate son at all – because that was the truth. Let the paparazzi spread the news; after all, he, as the illegitimate son, currently held the largest portion of the Gu family's assets.
Victory and defeat were the only things that mattered. Once he disposed of the old man, these Hong Kong paparazzi would undoubtedly grovel at his feet, Brother Dragon.
Behind his golden-rimmed glasses, Brother Dragon's narrow phoenix eyes revealed a bloodthirsty ferocity. "Dad, if you don't like this news, I'll have their newspaper smashed to pieces. How about changing the headline to '#Disgraced Second Young Master Gu, Parading His Wealthy Mistress Around'? What do you think?"
The title Brother Dragon had chosen was practically pushing Gu Chengfu towards his end. A wealthy mistress? Whose mistress? Didn't she still belong to Gu Chengfu?
Even Hong Kong paparazzi dared not include him in their headlines, yet his own son, Gu Long, had dragged his name into it.
Despite his reputation for being cunning and deep, even Gu Chengfu was left gasping for breath in anger.
"Dad, if you don't like this title, I can change it..." Brother Dragon rattled the newspaper in his hand. "How about '#Badge of Peace - Gu Shaoqian's Charitable Pretense Swindles Hong Kong for 84 Hours'?"
Slam! Gu Shaoqian slammed his fist on the table in fury. "Get out! Get out of here!"
Throwing the newspaper at his enraged father, Brother Dragon strolled out of the Gu family villa. Behind him echoed Gu Chengfu's anguished roar, "I shouldn't have brought him back! Disobedient child! Why didn't he just die outside?!"
Hmpf.
Brother Dragon snickered coldly. "Old fool, as long as you're still alive, I'll make sure to live well."
Brother Dragon wasn't the slightest bit afraid of Gu Chengfu because he knew that the elder had long held a murderous intent towards him, but didn't wish to bear the burden of killing his own son.
If not for the fact that the despicable fortune-teller Lin Liping was still locked up at the police station and thus unable to act against Brother Dragon, who knew how many assassination attempts would have been made on the man's life?
Gu Chengfu had always nurtured his sons with the goal of excellence, but now he realized that the sons by his side were either Brother Dragon, a rebellious figure always plotting against him, or Gu Shaoqian, seemingly outstanding on the surface yet constantly engaged in foolish endeavors.
The children from the third household were still too young to be groomed as rivals to Brother Dragon or Gu Shaoqian. If it were the son from the first household, Gu Chi... what would he have become?
Gu Chengfu couldn't help but recall his poised and intelligent first wife, Du Yanhong, who could handle any situation with grace and devise perfect solutions. A child raised by such a refined and clever woman would undoubtedly be a true scion of an elite family, blessed with both striking looks and exceptional intellect.
After all, Gu Chi had shown extraordinary intelligence and wit from a young age.
This was precisely what Gu Chengfu feared most – being surpassed by his son in his prime, or having his power seized at the peak of his authority. Whenever thoughts of Du Yanhong and her son crossed his mind, a deep sense of crisis gripped his heart.
As for Gu Shaoqian, freshly cleaned up and dressed in new clothes after returning to his room, and accompanied by the second wife, they were led before Gu Chengfu. There, they found a menacing and murderous look in the patriarch's eyes.
The second wife was so terrified that her legs gave way, causing her to collapse with a thud. This commotion startled the already anxious Gu Shaoqian and pulled Gu Chengfu out of his contemplation, his murderous intent momentarily fading.
Upon seeing the second wife kneeling at his feet, he frowned. "Why are you kneeling? What's the matter?"
"Sir, it was all because of Su Qilan's poor handling of today's events..." The second wife had initially been fond of Su Qilan's publicity plan since it had brought her benefits.
However, she had always held a disdainful view towards Su Qilan. When Su Qilan's ideas were useful, they were seen as adding luster to her son Gu Shaoqian. Now that things had gone awry, in the second wife's eyes, it was a sign of Su Qilan's incompetence in both thinking and execution. How could a grand ceremony have lacked adequate security measures? It allowed those paparazzi to disrupt her son's event.
In the second wife's perspective, Gu Shaoqian could never be at fault; it was always Su Qilan who didn't deserve to be his fiancée.
Gu Chengfu frowned, as he hadn't heard Su Qilan's name in a long time. Mentioned by the second wife, he recalled the not-so-attractive woman with cunning schemes and clever tricks.
"Shaoqian, what do you have to say?" Gu Chengfu gazed intently at his son.
Faced with his father's piercing gaze, Gu Shaoqian fell silent for a moment before responding, "Father, the mistake today lies with me..."
"Shaoqian, what nonsense are you spouting?" The second wife, kneeling at Gu Chengfu's feet, tried to prompt him not to take the blame upon himself.
But Gu Shaoqian remained resolute. "Father, Qi Lan's idea was good. It's my fault for not executing it flawlessly."
This was truly how Gu Shaoqian felt, for he could not in good conscience claim that Su Qilan was at fault. From afar in Country Chao, Su Qilan was devising strategies for him, concocting plans to help him reclaim the glory that rightfully belonged to the Second Young Master.
Moreover, Gu Shaoqian had indeed tasted the sweetness of this approach, and it was indeed an original idea that no one had employed before. The results had proven to be highly effective.
"Daddy, if I can genuinely contribute to a poverty-stricken elderly care home and assist those truly needy elders, I believe even if reporters try to dig up dirt on me, they won't find any scandalous information." Gu Shaoqian wasn't truly naive.
Wisdom comes from experience, and on his way back, he reflected thoroughly on his own mistakes. To simply attribute the fault to Su Qilan without reviewing the incident himself would not befit his status as the Second Young Master Gu, Gu Shaoqian.
Moreover, he was aware that Gu Chengfu loathed men who blindly followed women's whims and blamed them for all misfortunes.
Not that Gu Chengfu was a gentleman, respecting and cherishing women. On the contrary, this was a manifestation of his machismo, evidence of his disdain for women.
Gu Chengfu looked down on women, sharing the mindset of many men in modern society who considered women as mere appendages to men. Women could be supportive partners but should not overly interfere with men's affairs.
A man's career was his own kingdom, and allowing a woman to rule it would be a mockery, wouldn't it?
Gu Shaoqian acknowledged his mistake today, not because of Su Qilan, but due to a rare twinge of conscience and a genuine self-examination of the reasons behind his failure. As someone nurtured by Gu Chengfu since childhood, Gu Shaoqian was not truly foolish.
"Father, please give me another chance," Gu Shaoqian pleaded sincerely, looking directly at Gu Chengfu. "I will definitely restore the reputation of the Gu family."
Gu Chengfu fixated on Gu Shaoqian, who was bowing his head before him, without uttering a word. The atmosphere was tense; the second wife, protective of her son, attempted to intercede for Gu Shaoqian. However, as soon as she opened her mouth, she was met with a cold glare from Gu Chengfu. His piercing gaze, imbued with a murderous intent, silenced her completely.
"Shaoqian, you've reflected well this time," Gu Chengfu told his son. "A man should be dedicated to his career. You can listen to a woman's opinion, but you must also have your own judgment and capabilities. After all, women can only serve as distractions!"
"Father speaks wisely," Gu Shaoqian replied obediently.
"Well then, leave the cleanup of this matter to you," Gu Chengfu said, patting Gu Shaoqian's shoulder as he stood up. He spoke kindly, "Your mother has been through a scare. Let her rest in the hospital."
The second wife's face lit up with joy. Was this an indication that she wouldn't have to return to prison?
"Ah, right," Gu Chengfu paused after taking a few steps away.
"What else can I do for you, Father?" Gu Shaoqian, ever dutiful, stepped forward to stand before Gu Chengfu, attentively listening to his instructions.
"There's nothing much, just that Uncle Lin is still at the police station," Gu Chengfu appreciated Gu Shaoqian's submissive attitude, which reminded him of Brother Dragon's ambition but with a stronger sense of filial piety.
Gu Chengfu felt it necessary to give Brother Dragon a reminder, lest he thought he could act recklessly just because he had taken over a casino.
"You take a lawyer and go pick your Uncle Lin up later," Gu Chengfu instructed. "I've already spoken to Qin Shili about it."
Trading Lin Liping, the master strategist, for Qin Shili's support in the development of Tsim Sha Tsui was the outcome of nearly twenty hours of intense negotiation that day.
If Second Madam knew that when she and Lin Liping were both taken into custody, Gu Chengfu had chosen to save Lin Liping over his own bedmate, she would likely be furious enough to spit blood.
But Second Madam was unaware that she was disposable; instead, she blamed Gu Shaoqian, "You're not at fault, so why admit your mistake? Are you really so protective of Su Qilan?"
"Mother," Gu Shaoqian frowned, "Qi Lan's proposal this time was indeed flawless." It was he who underestimated the ordinary people, believing them too gullible to mount a significant counterattack.
Gu Shaoqian, usually high and mighty, had begun to reflect and now treated those at the bottom of society with greater respect.
Second Madam felt particularly upset that Gu Shaoqian refused to criticize Su Qilan. Her heart was set on her son, but now he was defending the daughter-in-law she despised, causing great dissatisfaction for Second Madam.
Perhaps the relationship between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law was always fraught with complexity and hidden conflicts!
Gu Shaoqian instructed the servants to send Second Madam to the hospital for rest, while he himself changed back into formal attire and headed to the police station with a lawyer to retrieve Lin Liping.
At this moment, Shen Qing also arrived at the small fishing village. Brother Biao parked the car by the entrance.
Aunt Beautiful and Uncle Zhong, who had been eagerly awaiting, promptly approached. "Mr. Shen, it's sunny out; you should shield yourself from the sun."
Aunt Beautiful beamed with joy as she held the umbrella over Shen Qing, but Shen Qing took the umbrella and shared it with her instead. After all, Aunt Beautiful was an elder, and even if Shen Qing was the boss, it wouldn't do to disregard respect in front of someone older, would it?
Aunt Beautiful, however, felt a bit flattered, and at the same time, she realized that Boss Shen truly knew how to win people over.
She casually discussed businesses worth tens of millions or even hundreds of millions without the slightest hint of arrogance or conceit. Owner Shen had a warm smile for everyone she spoke to, appearing both charming and endearing. How could Aunt Beautiful not take a liking to her?
Uncle Zhong walked cheerfully alongside the two, ever since he was entrusted by the Chief with the full responsibility of informing the staff about the relocation and obtaining their signatures after the bell tower land was sold to Shen Qing.
Whether it was the unemployed staff who had been living in the dormitory of the clock tower or those still employed, upon hearing that the company would be relocating and providing homes to its employees, they all rushed as fast as they could, fearing that they might miss their chance to sign the agreement and not receive their allotted homes.
These were luxurious houses spanning over eight or nine hundred square feet—houses that many had worked diligently their entire lives but still couldn't afford. Now, they were being offered for free.
Uncle Zhong even negotiated on their behalf, allowing any employee of the railway board to purchase an additional house at cost price. Who wouldn't hurry?
Such a fortunate windfall was an opportunity that one couldn't afford to miss, even for a second, lest they showed disrespect to the luxury that awaited them.
Now, everyone tacitly acknowledged Uncle Zhong as the acting chief of the railway board. Wherever he went, they addressed him as "Chief," "Chief this," "Chief that."
Of course, despite his newfound prestige, Uncle Zhong didn't forget that his former superior was still in office. Hence, he insisted everyone address him as Deputy Director, not Director.
Respect for the elder leader was crucial!
Uncle Zhong was skilled in interpersonal relationships and knew how to navigate the situation. Otherwise, it would have been impossible for him to be promoted to Deputy Director while so many others had lost their jobs.
As Shen Qing was warmly welcomed into the courtyard by Aunt Beautiful and Uncle Zhong, Brother Biao and Huoniu diligently guarded the entrance, preventing anyone from approaching and disturbing Boss Shen's business discussions.
Scanning the surroundings, Brother Biao noticed Fish Sheng sneakily peering from his own yard with his grandmother.
Fish Sheng's attempt at stealth was no match for Brother Biao's sharp gaze, which caught him in the act.
Startled, Fish Sheng hurriedly hid behind a fence, saying, "Grandma, stop watching. They're fierce fighters."
"Are you scared? If you can handle that Shen woman, you'll become the boss of those bodyguards," the old grandmother replied. "You're a man; women eventually marry. That Shen boss should marry you."
"Are you kidding me? You want me to marry her?" The mere thought frightened Fish Sheng. "She's the one who put me and Brother Hao in jail to eat royal food."
"Eating royal food" was a colloquial term similar to "serving time in prison." Fish Sheng truly dared not provoke Shen Qing again.
This young lady appears charming and graceful, with a smile as endearing as a kitten's. But Fish Sheng, who has had dealings with Shen Qing, knows just how terrifying and cunning she truly is.
The old grandmother never expected that there was such a grudge between Shen Qing and her grandson. She was particularly dissatisfied with Shen Qing; how could a woman lay hands on a man?
However, Grandma didn't attribute this to Shen Qing's prowess; instead, she believed that Fish Sheng had committed kidnapping, which was why the police officers had taken him into custody.
"Why are you afraid? You're getting married, why are you afraid?" The old lady egged Fish Sheng on. "Sir will lock you up for years, but you'll be out in half a year thanks to others."
"A Sheng, the person backing you is more powerful than her; they can even handle the police. Why are you afraid of a mainland girl?" The old lady took great pride in her Hong Kong native identity. "No matter how successful a mainland girl's business is in Hong Kong, she's still just a floating weed without roots. Be a bit more assertive and sleep with her – wouldn't she then have to listen to you?"
This old woman could hardly be called anything but vicious, aiding men in harming women despite being one herself.
If Shen Qing were aware of her malicious thoughts, she'd surely give her two resounding slaps!
Fish Sheng was somewhat swayed by the old woman's words, but the memory of how Shen Qing had landed him in jail filled him with fear.
Fish Sheng wanted to run, but Brother Biao's unwavering gaze kept him in place. He dared not escape and could only crawl on the ground, slowly making his way into the house.
The sight irked the old woman; how could a grown man be afraid of a woman? What sort of nonsense was this?
Seated in Aunt Beautiful's small courtyard, Shen Qing had just received the employee signatures from Uncle Zhong for the railway board of directors.
"Boss Shen," Uncle Zhong said with a smile, "all the signatures from our over a hundred employees for the relocation are here. You're looking at the original document. After you've finished, I'll take it back to the company for filing."
As he spoke, Uncle Zhong took out a copy from his briefcase. "This is for your own records."
"Thank you." Shen Qing freed her other hand to accept the copy from Uncle Zhong.
If not for the need for secrecy, she would have brought her secretary along. Now, many tasks required Shen Qing's direct involvement.
Though it was somewhat troublesome, the thought of having only nine days to finalize the fishing village acquisition made her see the benefit in handling things herself. At least this way, there would be no leaks or interference from others.
After carefully examining the demolition agreement, Shen Qing passed it to her lawyer, Eevee, for review. Only when both the original and copy were confirmed without issues did Shen Qing return the original to Uncle Zhong and put the copy away.
Aunt Beautiful, who had been waiting patiently on the side, saw that Shen Qing and Uncle Zhong had concluded their business and eagerly served Shen Qing more tea.
"Boss Shen, I recall you mentioned purchasing the clock tower land and were planning to acquire our village's plots?" Aunt Beautiful asked with a broad grin, "I wonder if that offer still stands?"
"Of course it does," Shen Qing replied with a warm smile. "I'm just curious, Aunt Beautiful, if you could sell me the entire village?"
Of course, Aunt Beautiful was eager to sell the entire village, but there was still the family of the local administrator, with whom she had a conflict.
Nevertheless, Aunt Beautiful was astute enough not to divulge the village's troubles to Shen Qing.
Instead, she inquired, "I wonder how Shen Boss plans to acquire the village? Our land here is even larger than the Bell Tower's."
Shen Qing was aware that Aunt Beautiful had her own selfish motives, hoping to secure more benefits for the villagers.
But in business, one had to be pragmatic. As the acquiring party, Shen Qing wouldn't act like the foolish son of a landlord, neglecting her own interests for the other side's.
Thus, she replied with a smile, "Aunt Beautiful, although the land in the village is extensive, a portion of it is sandy. It's not suitable for constructing buildings, and the beach areas near the coast aren't ideal either..."
Building on sandy land would entail costly foundation work. In the future, when the economy further developed and cross-strait travel became possible, seaside hotels and resorts might become feasible.
But building a resort now was impractical.
While Shen Qing had considered such long-term prospects, the land acquisition was a present matter. She would naturally base the purchase on current prices and conditions. After all, the concept of a future seaside resort was a product of her foresight and her own ability; she couldn't be expected to pay for her own vision, could she?
Besides, who wouldn't be selective when buying goods?
Shen Qing's generosity towards the Bell Tower was due to the fact that the land belonged to the Railway Board. Moreover, the Railway Board had indeed set a fair price and could handle the complicated relocation process within just a couple of days.
Initially, when Shen Qing visited the Bell Tower for inspection, she expected it to be a tough battle due to its notorious residents and troublemakers. Little did she know that the seemingly problematic Bell Tower was the easiest to resolve, while the seemingly tranquil fishing village held hidden tensions and two rival factions.
The village's executive councillor was Fish Sheng's father. Given her conflict with Fish Sheng, if he found out about her plans to purchase the fishing village, he would likely expose the matter immediately.
Whose security guard was Fish Sheng? He worked for both foreigners and Ge Yizhong.
The foreigners were Qin Shili's archrivals, consistently hindering his political career and the development of Tsim Sha Tsui. Ge Yizhong, on the other hand, was Shen Qing's nemesis, constantly causing her troubles. Together, these individuals formed a formidable force that could potentially backfire on Shen Qing if not handled with caution.
"And you've also seen that Fish Sheng's family and I don't exactly see eye to eye," Shen Qing revealed half the truth to Aunt Beautiful. "You're aware of Fish Sheng's imprisonment, right?"
Aunt Beautiful nodded. Fish Sheng was notoriously known as a troublemaker in the fishing village, and many villagers rejoiced when he was incarcerated. He often abused his power as the son of an executive councillor to bully others in the village. The feud between Fish Sheng's family and Aunt Beautiful's had been long-standing. Upon hearing about Fish Sheng's imprisonment, Aunt Beautiful had cheered and even cooked a celebratory meal.
However, Aunt Beautiful failed to grasp why Boss Shen brought up Fish Sheng's imprisonment. Could it be that Boss Shen was aware of the situation in the village?
Close behind came Shen Qing's continued explanation: "He was locked up because he kidnapped me."
Aunt Beautiful and Uncle Zhong's eyes widened in surprise; neither had expected such a history between Shen Qing and Fish Sheng.
This situation had become complicated.
In his mind, Uncle Zhong considered that with Shen Qing and Fish Sheng having this grudge, regardless of the price Shen Qing offered for the small fishing village's land, Fish Sheng's family would surely rally their supportive villagers to cause trouble.
Looking at Aunt Beautiful, who was deeply worried, Uncle Zhong also began strategizing in his heart, hoping that his elder sister could successfully negotiate this deal. His sister, as the village chief, had faced challenges as a woman; he, as her brother, had witnessed her struggles and fatigue. That was why he occasionally drove back to the village, wanting to support Aunt Beautiful. Otherwise, Fish Sheng's family, leveraging their position as councilors, would certainly make life difficult for his sister.
"A damn punk like Fish Sheng ruins everything," Aunt Beautiful grumbled softly. "Stupid bastard..."
No wonder Shen Qing wanted to buy the village land but didn't at the same time, due to this underlying issue.
If possible, Aunt Beautiful sincerely wished to bind Fish Sheng's entire family and throw them into the sea to feed the fish...
"Mrs. Beautiful, if I were to purchase the village land, dealing with Fish Sheng's family is a necessity," Shen Qing expressed sincerely, seeking her trust. "I'm also aware that Fish Sheng's father, being a councilor, has always been vying for your position as village chief."
Upon hearing this, Aunt Beautiful knew that Shen Qing had thoroughly understood the situation in the small fishing village.
Even Uncle Zhong looked at Shen Boss with newfound respect. How was it that this man's mind worked so astutely? At such a young age, he handled matters with such sophistication and could thoroughly investigate any potential risks.
No wonder the Director had been so willing to sell the Bell Tower land to her. This was a clever girl with great wisdom.
Both Uncle Zhong and Aunt Beautiful looked at Shen Qing with admiration and respect.
"Aunt Beautiful, since you've laid everything out, I won't hide anything from you," she said sincerely. "I can convince those who support me to sell you the land, but Fish Sheng and his gang will definitely give us trouble."
"Shen Boss has a grudge against Fish Sheng, and so do I. The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Aunt Beautiful smiled as she poured tea for Shen Qing. "So, does Shen Boss have any brilliant ideas on how to deal with Fish Sheng and his group?"
"My mind isn't as sharp as Shen Boss's. If you have any good plans, please share them with me," Aunt Beautiful acknowledged, knowing there was no point in hiding anything from a wise person. "I'll fully cooperate with whatever Shen Boss suggests."
"I'll cooperate too," Uncle Zhong pledged his loyalty. "We siblings will both work alongside Shen Boss."
Shen Boss was a man of honor and principle, and the benefits of partnering with him were unparalleled. At least in Uncle Zhong's decades-long tenure at the railway board, he had never encountered anyone quite like Shen Boss.
If one could ensure Shen Boss's conditions and interests were met, he would reciprocate with unexpected benefits without reservation.
Working with Mr. Shen is always a pleasure, and Uncle Zhong also hopes that his own elder sister can serve as the village chief smoothly and enjoy her blessings in peace.
"I won't hold back anymore since both Uncle Zhong and Aunt Beautiful are so cooperative." Shen Qing raised her teacup in a toast to them, then leaned closer to share her plan in a hushed voice.
Both Uncle Zhong and Aunt Beautiful leaned in attentively, and as they listened, their eyes gleamed with approval. "What a brilliant idea, Mr. Shen!"
The pair spoke in unison, praising her plan.
"It's not so much a brilliant idea," Shen Qing replied, not being modest but aware of the potential flaws in her plan. "I'm concerned that there might be issues when implementing it."
Yet, it was the best idea that came to mind thus far.
There was still a chance to successfully purchase the land of the small fishing village if they tried; otherwise, they would gain nothing. In business, one should be brave and avoid greed. Now was the time for Boss Shen to display courage!
When Shen Qing left the small fishing village, it had already grown dark.
As Brother Biao and Huoniu, along with the other bodyguard, respectfully escorted Boss Shen into the car and bid him farewell, Fish Sheng, who had been hiding in his house, finally dared to poke his head out and look.
Upon seeing Boss Shen depart the village in his luxurious car, Fish Sheng felt the invisible shackles that had bound him vanish instantaneously.
"Damn it, why are they only leaving now?"
Fish Sheng, stretching his muscles, stepped out and noticed Uncle Zhong and Aunt Beautiful still standing outside the large courtyard, watching Mr. Shen's car depart.
His eyes rolling, Fish Sheng sauntered over to Aunt Beautiful's convenience store in his flip-flops. He handed her a fifty-dollar Hong Kong bill. "Give me a pack of Mei Hua King."
Mei Hua King was a well-known cigarette brand in Hong Kong, costing 35 Hong Kong dollars per pack back in the 70s. A hooligan like Fish Sheng always spent money lavishly.
Aunt Beautiful wouldn't turn down business. As she passed him the cigarettes and change, Fish Sheng inquired about Mr. Shen. "What did Boss Ah Mei want with you two?"
"You have no right to ask about her business," Aunt Beautiful replied straightforwardly.
"Hey, what's your problem?" Fish Sheng couldn't maintain his composure and spoke angrily, "Ah Mei is with her and hasn't returned. I just want to ask about Ah Mei. Don't push your luck!"
"What does Ah Mei have to do with me?" Aunt Beautiful continued, "Didn't you kick her out long ago? You beat her up so badly that day, the police came after you. Yet, you dare to come back?"
"This fishing village belongs to me, even the police can't do anything." Fish Sheng lit his cigarette with an arrogant air, "I've got people protecting me at the police station too."
"Who's protecting you?" Aunt Beautiful probed back.
Fish Sheng was about to speak when he sneered, "Mind your own business, old widow. You're always hanging around with that Shen fellow; there's no telling what kind of trouble you're stirring up."
Aunt Beautiful couldn't bear to hear Fish Sheng insult Shen Qing and immediately chased after him with a feather duster. In her youth, she had learned Wing Chun, so this hooligan Fish Sheng stood no chance against her.
"Damn it, I don't fight with women," Fish Sheng declared, fleeing faster than a hare.
"Damn street rat, sooner or later someone will cut you down in the streets," Aunt Beautiful shouted at Fish Sheng's retreating back. The old grandmother couldn't stand by and listen to this, joining in the verbal spat with Aunt Beautiful.
If not for Aunt Beautiful's sturdy fists, that old lady would have rushed forward to attack. Instead, they engaged in a heated argument.
Back home, Shen Qing called Qin Shili to inform him that all the procedures for the Bell Tower property were complete.
Qin Shili was delighted upon hearing this and asked about the plan for the fishing village land.
"I've got an idea, but we'll see if it works out tomorrow," Shen Qing said, calculating how much more money she had left to build.
On the other end of the line, Qin Shili continued, "Miss Shen, Lin Liping has already been released by Gu Shaoqian."
Shen Qing wasn't surprised, knowing that Gu Chengfu held significant power in Hong Kong. It was only a matter of time before he secured Lin Liping's release.
The Gu family relied on Lin Liping's fortunetelling to navigate throughauspicious and inauspicious times. As Shen Qing spoke with Qin Shili, Lin Liping, freshly released from prison, was sitting in a car, divining his own fate.
In the next moment, Lin Liping's expression shifted, and he opened his eyes to tell Gu Shaoqian, who sat beside him, "Something terrible is going to happen tonight."
