Chapter 130: Broken Glass Bead (6)

Fu Nanyu exited the club, where a car was already waiting. Qin Xianzhao stepped out of the driver's seat, handing him the keys. "President Fu, I'll be leaving now."

Fu Nanyu gave a slight nod, walked around to the driver's side, opened the door, and settled into the car.

In the back seat, Lu Jingtang sat with her arms crossed high over her chest, her hair tied in a bun. A few wisps clung to her fair cheek, and oversized sunglasses obscured half her face, constantly slipping down to rest on her plump cheeks. Her soft, pink lips curved into a sly, adorable smirk.

A flicker of amusement danced in Fu Nanyu's dark eyes. "No fortune-telling, thank you."

Lu Jingtang puffed her cheeks to push the sunglasses up, then leaned in to whisper, "I only tell fortunes for those destined to meet."

Fu Nanyu turned, his finger sliding her sunglasses down to reveal her round, almond-shaped eyes. His smile met her gaze as he leaned in, brushing his lips against hers—a fleeting touch that nonetheless sent a thrill through her. "Does this make us destined?" he murmured.

Her lips still tingling, Lu Jingtang blushed, mumbling, "It makes us... lovers."

Fu Nanyu chuckled softly, the sound like summer cicadas stirring warmth in his heart. By his side, it was still Lu Jingtang.

Ten minutes later, the car restarted. Lu Jingtang moved to the passenger seat, sipping iced milk tea. The cool sensation brought some relief to her slightly numb tongue.

The instigator, however, showed no remorse. Fu Nanyu glanced at the half-finished milk tea. "Don’t drink too much. Save some room for dinner."

Lu Jingtang mumbled an agreement, then rebelliously took a big gulp.

    Fu Nanyu: "..."

Following Lu Jingtang’s navigation, Fu Nanyu drove all the way to the outskirts. He glanced at the scenery outside the window and asked calmly, "What are we doing here?"

Lu Jingtang mysteriously adjusted her sunglasses. "We’re all adults now. It’s time for something exciting. I’ve been thinking about this for a long time."

Fu Nanyu’s grip on the steering wheel faltered, sending the car swerving in an S-curve. His neck flushed red, his Adam’s apple bobbing nervously. His expression was a bizarre mix of conflict and unnameable excitement.

Lu Jingtang looked at him, puzzled. "What’s wrong?"

"Are you... sure about this?" Fu Nanyu’s gaze darted away and back, his ears bright red.

Lu Jingtang, now uncertain herself, answered vaguely, "What’s there to be sure about eating chi—ken???" As she spoke, her lips parted from the straw, and an extra sound slipped out unintentionally. Because of that sound, the meaning of her sentence took on an entirely different connotation in the listener’s ears.

Fu Nanyu’s dark eyes narrowed sharply. His throat tightened, leaving him speechless. His soul felt as if it were teetering on the edge of a cliff. He clenched and unclenched his back teeth, remaining tense for several minutes.

Lu Jingtang began to feel unsure. Why was he so conflicted about eating Qingyuan chicken? Her round eyes filled with confusion as she turned to him. "What’s wrong? Don’t you... like it?"

"No... it’s not that. Do you really... want to?" Fu Nanyu stared intently at her, his mind in turmoil. Part of him thought about how he had raised Lu Jingtang since she was three, teaching her every value and manner. He should be educating her to be wary of all men, including himself. How could he...? But then again, adult men have physical needs, and so do women—it’s nothing shameful. As her boyfriend, satisfying her was his duty.

Was this the retribution for pseudo-sibling romance?

If she really wanted it, then... he had no choice...

Yes, Lu Jingtang nodded. She had been craving Qingyuan chicken for days, constantly seeing videos about it. But there was no Cantonese chef at home now, so she specifically booked this farmhouse restaurant.

After half a minute of internal struggle, Fu Nanyu sighed as if reluctantly accepting, though the twitching muscles in his face showed no sign of being forced.

Lu Jingtang truly couldn’t understand him.

Upon arriving at their destination, Fu Nanyu asked if they needed to buy anything. Lu Jingtang found him odd and scratched her cheek. "Buy what? I’ve already prepared everything."

It seemed she had been planning this for a while. Fu Nanyu gave her a deep look, realizing for the first time his failure as a boyfriend.

Lu Jingtang wasn't on the same wavelength. She pulled him to the reserved private room. As the door opened, a fragrant, steaming Qingyuan chicken sat prominently in the center of the dining table.

Sensing the person behind her come to a sudden stop, she turned to see Fu Nanyu frozen, his expression stiff. Two buttons of his shirt were undone, and the blush on his face faded gradually. He asked in disbelief, "You meant... this chicken?"

Lu Jingtang tilted her head, puzzled. "Yeah, what other chicken?"

Fu Nanyu let out a heavy sigh. Humans are so dirty.

Having been reassigned as Grandpa Fu’s assistant, Ji Yunyin realized her intentions had been seen through. The system advised her to make a strategic retreat, as previous hosts had used this method to successfully drive a wedge between the male lead and his lover.

So Ji Yunyin refused all help from the Fu family, moved out of Hezhuang, and took a job as a waitress at the club where Fu Nanyu often conducted business, making it convenient to run into him.

The system manipulated the minds of several wealthy young men, sending them to harass Ji Yunyin, coincidentally witnessed by Fu Nanyu.

As expected, the upright male lead wouldn't ignore someone in trouble. Fu Nanyu’s subordinates came to her rescue. Though it wasn’t Fu Nanyu himself, it must have been his order.

But her joy was short-lived. Fu Nanyu metaphorically slapped her awake by having his bodyguard offer her a job as a waitress elsewhere.

The bodyguard smiled faintly at her. "Miss Ji, you probably can’t continue working here. President Fu said you’re a benefactor of the Fu family and shouldn’t be treated poorly. My family’s restaurant is hiring waitstaff—it offers social security and housing fund. You can give it a try."

According to the usual trope, shouldn’t Fu Nanyu feel sympathy for her and make an exception to hire her as his assistant? Why wasn’t he following the script?

Repeated attempts yielded no results, instead turning the system’s hand-picked host into a joke. The system began to panic. This shouldn’t be happening.
