Chapter 137 Heartbeat
byChapter 137 Heartbeat
"From the moment she was created,"
"She was destined for tragedy."
"When everyone told me her existence was merely to serve another's happy ending,"
"Only I heard her heartbeat."
"She is Lu Jingtang, the most deserving of love in this entire world."
"Lu Jingtang, if the pain is too much, love me a little less, but please don't forget me. If possible, meet me in your dreams sometimes."
"Warning!!! Target eliminated. The world is about to collapse."
Chris pursed his lips, his face still devoid of expression. He turned to Lu Jingtang and slowly said, "Do you regret it now? He was meant for a better life. You killed him. I've heard that love between humans is fleeting. Many of my previous targets had a beloved before my bound hosts appeared, but didn't they all eventually change their affections? Do you regret it? You should have given up sooner. It would have been better for everyone."
Lu Jingtang trembled uncontrollably from the pain, vomiting great mouthfuls of blood. Blood and tears mingled, a fiery inferno scorching her entire being.
Fu Nanyu, I'm in so much pain, I'm dying.
She lifted her head slightly, her gaze fixed on Chris. Her face was smeared with blood, utterly disheveled, yet her eyes remained resilient and unyielding. Her voice quivered lightly, but a resolute determination shone through, "Just as you said, I was born because of him. Otherwise, this world wouldn't even know the name Lu Jingtang..."
"I am a part of him. If he dies, my living is his living."
"He loves me. If I die, he would live for me, but I can't bear to leave him."
The system space shook violently, continuously emitting icy, robotic alerts of the world's imminent collapse!
Mission failed. Chris had absorbed no energy from the world, and he was about to be downgraded and regress. After two years spent with Lu Jingtang, day in and day out, he felt a flicker of reluctance. As if unsure what expression to adopt, his face appeared stiff and unnatural. His Adam's apple bobbed. "It's been two years. I hope next time we meet, we can coexist peacefully, like friends."
"Get lost! The sight of you sickens me." Lu Jingtang didn't even glance at him. With those words, she snatched a pair of chopsticks from the ground and plunged them violently into her throat. Blood splattered, and her head slowly drooped, utterly lifeless.
Her body gradually turned transparent as the space collapsed, finally dissolving into nothingness.
Chris stared blankly, a glimmer of human sorrow flickering in his deep blue eyes. A tear slowly slid down from the corner of his eye.
Lu Jingtang lived for twenty-three years, never knowing her origins or where she was headed.
The orphanage matron said everyone has a mother and father, but sometimes their parents might be facing temporary difficulties, preventing them from being reunited.
She asked the matron if everyone has an older brother. The matron said not necessarily—it depends on destiny.
Later, as Lu Jingtang grew older, she no longer spoke daily of wanting an older brother, but she would still faintly furrow her brow whenever someone mentioned the term "older brother."
In truth, she didn't deliberately try to remember Fu Nanyu. It was just on a perfectly ordinary day, while gazing at the moon, that she suddenly remembered everything.
It turned out there really was someone waiting for her to come home all along.
Lu Jingtang slept for a long time, though not very peacefully. She suddenly opened her eyes, her chest heaving with rapid breaths.
She looked around in confusion. This was her room in the Fu family. She lowered her tear-moistened lashes and glanced at her hand, which was being held tightly. As she stirred, Fu Nanyu woke up too.
He was still wearing the clothes from the banquet, looking somewhat exhausted, with stubble growing on his face. The moment his eyes met Lu Jingtang's, his eyes were bloodshot and puffy.
His Adam's apple bobbed as he looked at Lu Jingtang and said hoarsely, "Lu Jingtang, welcome home."
Lu Jingtang looked back at him with reddened eyes, her voice choked with tears, a mix of crying and laughing. "But I'm the villainous supporting character, brother. Aren't you afraid?"
Fu Nanyu drew her into his embrace, feeling each other's heartbeats, and said in a low voice, "No, you're my Lu Jingtang."
"Brother, do you still make wishes on your birthday?"
"I did. I wished that you and I would never be separated again."
Lu Jingtang buried her face in his chest, weeping uncontrollably, soaking the fabric of Fu Nanyu's shirt. Fu Nanyu didn't stop her, only patting her back gently again and again to soothe her. The first snow, across time and space after all these years, had finally found its way back to him at last.
