Chapter 236: Huo Mingying’s Guilt
by 叶微摇Chapter 236: Huo Mingying's Guilt
Huo Tingying sneered and nodded at the lawyer, gesturing for him to enter.
The lawyer nodded and immediately went into the ward.
Then, Huo Tingying gave a cold glance to the Huo family members, pulling Yun Mu toward the elevator.
Yun Mu followed behind him but suddenly stopped walking.
Huo Tingying noticed the pause in her steps and stopped as well, turning around. "What's wrong?"
Yun Mu lightly pursed her lips and asked, "You just said you wouldn't look for your biological father?"
He pressed his lips together and looked down. "Yes."
Yun Mu continued, "Actually, I have a lead. If you want it..."
"I don't," Huo Tingying's eyes flickered with a cold tone. "Why should I look for someone who never fulfilled their responsibilities as a father?"
Yun Mu looked at him quietly. "Alright, then we won't."
In Huo Tingying's dark and helpless childhood, when he needed a father the most, that man was never there. So indeed, there was no need for him to appear now.
Huo Tingying turned away. "Is there anything else you want to ask?"
Yun Mu thought for a moment and said, "There's something suspicious about the old master's illness."
Huo Tingying's expression darkened slightly.
Yun Mu continued, "When I checked the old master's pulse earlier, I noticed something unusual, but he cut me off before I could speak the truth."
He wanted to protect the person who had harmed him from behind.
Who else could it be besides Huo Mingying?
Huo Tingying let out a cold laugh.
"You've guessed it too; it's likely Huo Mingying. She has a deep obsession with your father... with Huo Jinzhou's father. She probably resents the old master for sending her abroad back then, thinking it separated them, so she harbors resentment..."
The more Yun Mu spoke, the colder Huo Tingying's face became, a shadow of gloom settling over his handsome brow.
His expression hardened, and he turned to head back.
Worried that he might do something rash, Yun Mu quickly grabbed his arm.
"Since the old master didn't allow me to speak the truth in the ward, he clearly wants to cover this up and protect Huo Mingying. But if you rush over now and expose her in front of all the Huo family members and the lawyer, aren't you afraid you'll anger the old master to death?"
Yun Mu's words were blunt but successfully calmed the enraged Huo Tingying.
Yun Mu wasn't stopping him out of softness.
She simply didn't want to hurt the old master's heart at this critical juncture. Moreover, everything was just speculation without concrete evidence.
If Huo Tingying rushed over now, Huo Mingying might even turn the tables on him!
Huo Tingying regained his composure, took a deep breath, and his expression turned icy, suppressing his anger.
"For now, we'll let her off. We'll deal with her later..."
Huo Tingying left the sentence unfinished, but Yun Mu understood.
After the old master passed away, he would have plenty of time to settle things with Huo Mingying.
On the way back, Huo Tingying received a text message from Feng Shuo.
"Young Master, someone broke into the president's office at the company and the study at the villa. They seemed to be looking for something and fled when my men discovered them. Should we investigate who sent them?"
Huo Tingying's brows furrowed tightly.
Did they need to investigate?
Even a toe could tell it was Yun Shuiyao trying to steal the jade pendant.
But what was so special about this jade pendant that Yun Shuiyao risked so much to obtain it?
Huo Tingying's eyes flickered, and he subconsciously glanced at Yun Mu, who was lost in thought by the window.
When would this little woman remember their first meeting?
Unfortunately, Yun Mu's mind was preoccupied with thoughts of the old master and didn't notice his probing gaze.
She still didn't know what poison Huo Mingying had used on the old master, but it was clear that he couldn't be saved, only sustained for a short while.
Yun Mu had initially thought the old master could last a few more days, but early the next morning, she received a call from Doctor Lu Nansen at the hospital.
The old master had passed away ten minutes ago.
Though she had anticipated it, Yun Mu still took a moment to compose herself.
She hurriedly changed her clothes and went downstairs, seeing Huo Tingying sitting on the sofa. Clearly, he hadn't slept since returning home yesterday.
He was still wearing the same clothes from the day before, his long lashes slightly lowered, hiding his emotions.
...
At the Huo family's ancestral residence,
the once imposing building now hung white silk in the faint morning light, exuding an air of desolation.
Yun Mu recalled the first time she visited the Huo family's old residence and met Old Master Huo, feeling somewhat sentimental.
She never expected that in less than a year, that stern and authoritative old man would be gone.
The servants at the Huo family's old residence secretly glanced at Huo Tingying, exchanging looks, not daring to obstruct him.
Clearly, everyone already knew that Huo Tingying was not a member of the Huo family.
Huo Tingying didn't care at all, holding Yun Mu's hand as he walked into the foyer.
In the hall, beside Old Master Huo's memorial tablet, white candles burned continuously.
Upon seeing the two, Li Yunlan immediately took on an air of authority, trying to drive them out, with the second uncle of the Huo family also chiming in.
The mourning hall erupted into chaos, and it was only with the intervention of the old butler and Lawyer Qin that they were stopped.
"Old Master Huo left a will stating that if anyone dared to exclude the eldest son from the family due to his origins, they would not inherit any of the Huo family's assets."
When Lawyer Qin said this, the Huo family members indeed fell silent.
Throughout the entire process, Huo Tingying remained silent, merely sneering coldly before striding in and taking his usual seat.
On both sides stood the Huo family's lawyers, several assistants who had worked for Old Master Huo, and the notary.
Huo Mingying was absent, claiming to be too grief-stricken and needing bed rest due to a relapse of an old illness.
Yun Mu's eyelashes flickered.
He must have done something guilty and dared not show up.
Yun Mu whispered a few words into Huo Tingying's ear, and he nodded.
Then, Yun Mu got up and left.
Huo Jinzhou noticed Yun Mu's movement and frowned.
With the lawyer about to read the will, he couldn't spare any attention and could only let Yun Mu go upstairs.
Yun Mu knew the Huo family's old residence well and easily found Huo Mingying's room.
Huo Mingying was sitting on the balcony, wrapped in a shawl, lost in thought. He turned around when he heard footsteps, frowning.
"I don't recall hearing a knock."
Yun Mu smiled, "Perhaps I didn't knock."
Huo Mingying sneered, "I am at least your elder. Don't you, a Yun family's daughter, know basic manners?"
Yun Mu retorted, "As a daughter of a prestigious family, didn't you also commit the heinous acts of harboring feelings for your brother and poisoning your adoptive father?"
"You're slandering me!"
Yun Mu calmly walked over and sat down opposite Huo Mingying.
"Heaven sees what we do, Huo Mingying. Are you afraid of retribution?"
Huo Mingying's grip on the shawl tightened.
