Chapter 343: What Is Your Purpose
by 叶微摇Chapter 343: What Is Your Purpose
Yunzhe sent Yunmu back to the Yun family's courtyard.
By the time Yunmu sneaked out again, evading the guards and making her way to Ruoshui Garden, it was already half past eleven at night. Aunt Zhang and the other servants had all gone to bed.
She tiptoed upstairs as quietly as possible. When she passed by the study, she noticed a sliver of light from under the door; the door was not fully closed.
Without making a sound, she approached and peeked through the gap. She saw Yijue leaning on the desk with one hand supporting his forehead, while the other held a cigarette between his slender fingers. He was frowning as he smoked, staring at the documents on his computer.
The desk lamp cast a dim glow, and the swirling smoke further obscured his face in a hazy veil. She could vaguely see his furrowed brows and the chilling aura that surrounded him.
Yunmu glanced at the ashtray on the table, which was already full of cigarette butts.
What was wrong with him?
This man only smoked excessively when he was in a bad mood.
Was it because of her?
Yunmu recalled their previous argument. If it weren't for Yunzhe's appearance, she had intended to tell him that they were not just acquaintances but had been husband and wife, lovers.
But with Yunzhe's presence and Liu Ling there, she hesitated.
After returning, she thought about it and believed that Yijue hadn't completely forgotten her.
Now that he had remembered her, she should tell him everything about their past. Otherwise, if he really married Liu Ling, it would be too late.
Taking a deep breath, Yunmu went downstairs to brew a cup of soothing tea.
Then she went back up and gently knocked on the study door.
After a moment, Yijue's deep, magnetic voice came from inside, "Come in."
Yunmu pushed the door open with one hand and slowly entered.
She then quietly approached and placed the soothing tea on his desk.
As she did so, she pretended to bump into a nearby ornament. Yijue quickly grabbed her hand to help her place the cup down.
He glanced at the soothing tea, then looked up at her, "Why are you busy with this nonsense in the middle of the night?"
"This is a soothing tea I prepared specially for you. If you need to work late in the future, you can ask me to brew it for you. Smoke less; your body isn't suited for smoking," Yunmu said.
Yijue didn't extinguish the cigarette in his hand. He closed his laptop, leaned back lazily, and raised an eyebrow, "I asked what you're doing back here?"
"I am the family doctor you hired, so naturally, I should return."
A low chuckle escaped Yijue's throat, "Yunmu, this act is getting old. What do you really want? Or rather, why are you trying so hard to stay by my side?"
Yunmu felt a flicker of joy, but it vanished when she heard his next words.
What was he saying?
"You've already remembered who I am, yet you still ask why I'm staying by your side?"
"Yes, I underestimated you before and never investigated your identity, thinking you were just a blind girl. Ha, the head of the Yun family pretending to be blind in front of me for so many days must have been exhausting! Yunmu, do you know how much I despise that name! You and that little fool from the Yun family are equally repulsive!" he said coldly.
Yunmu's long lashes trembled as she understood.
He hadn't remembered who she was!
He thought she was a different Yunmu, the one he despised, and the current Yunmu, the scheming head of the Yun family.
She had returned full of hope to tell him everything and had kindly brewed a soothing tea for him, only to be humiliated.
"I know you're upset because I deceived you, but I won't hold it against you. You continue working; I'll leave." Yunmu took a step back and turned to go.
But Yijue suddenly reached out and threw the cup of soothing tea at Yunmu's feet.
Sizzle—
The hot tea splashed, and shards of the cup scattered.
Yunmu's delicate ankle immediately turned red and was cut by a piece of the broken cup, blood seeping out.
Yunmu looked down in disbelief at the man in front of her.
He had actually hurt her?
Yijue, of course, saw it too! A sharp pain pierced his heart.
He hadn't meant to, but his anger at her deception and her turning away without explanation had overwhelmed him.
At school tonight, he had chased after her but saw her willingly get into Yunzhe's car, disappearing together.
If she was already Yunzhe's fiancée, why did she come to tease him?
Seeing her ankle red and bleeding, he felt an unprecedented ache.
But his pride prevented him from rushing over to check her wound, so he continued to push, "Yunmu, do you still want to come and go freely in my Ruoshui Garden? Yunzhe, Ji Ming, you juggle different men every day and still manage to toy with me so effortlessly. Truly, you are the capable head of the Yun family!"
Hearing this, Yunmu's hurt instantly turned to anger.
She laughed coldly, "Since President Yijue sees me as such a woman, I'll leave. From now on, we'll have nothing to do with each other."
Panic surged in Yijue's heart.
Almost instinctively, he reached out, got up, and grabbed her slender wrist, pulling her forcefully into his embrace.
The moment he heard her say that they should keep to their own waters, a voice in his heart told him he couldn't just let her go.
Otherwise, he would truly lose her forever.
But when he realized what he had done, he was infinitely frustrated with himself for being so easily manipulated by this woman!
"What are you doing? Let me go!"
Yun Mu was pressed against his strong thigh by his forceful grip. Probably due to anger and pain, her fair earlobes turned red, and her eyes looked wet, making her appear like a stubborn yet pitiful little beast.
Yi Jue pinched her face in disgust, turning it away, not daring to look into her eyes. He said in a stern voice, "Stop pretending to be pitiful in front of me; I won't fall for your tricks!"
Yun Mu stubbornly turned her head back, staring straight at him, and asked, "Yi Jue, you keep accusing me of having ulterior motives, but have I ever done anything to wrong you? I don't know if someone has said something about me to you, but do you lack even basic judgment? In your heart, am I really that kind of fickle and scheming woman?"
A sharp pang pierced Yi Jue's heart.
Indeed, she had never hurt him.
He couldn't possibly lose his basic judgment just because of Liu Ling's few words.
Yet, he didn't know what came over him; every time he saw her interacting with another man, he felt an intense rage.
And he always wanted to confine her to his side, as if fearing she would leave again.
It seemed that deep down, he believed this woman had once abandoned and hurt him.
He lowered his gaze to the moisture in her eyes, feeling a chaotic mess in his heart, his head throbbing, and an overwhelming sense of pain.
This conflicting feeling drove him nearly mad.
His silence made Yun Mu believe he was admitting it.
She gave a cold laugh, mocking herself, "I must be crazy, expecting a scumbag to have a conscience!"
