Chapter 475 Yun Shumo Urges Marriage

Yun Mu and Yun Shumo had just returned to Maple Leaf Manor from the Shangguan family.

A black Rolls-Royce Phantom sped up behind them and screeched to a halt.

Yi Jue, clad in a sleek black suit, pushed the car door open and hurried towards Yun Mu, making sure she was okay before he finally relaxed.

Yun Mu was surprised, "What’s going on? I thought you were busy tonight?"

"You’re my top priority! I came running the moment I heard about the fire, but I couldn’t find you anywhere, and your phone was unreachable."

Yun Mu quickly took out her phone and saw it was dead.

"Sorry, my phone died. Yun Shumo and I just went to the Shangguan family," Yun Mu explained.

"The Shangguan family? What for?" Yi Jue asked.

"The nurse who escorted his sister back to the South Ming Continent went to the Shangguan family to work as a servant, but unfortunately, she was dismissed later for causing trouble, and the trail went cold again," Yun Mu shrugged.

Yi Jue narrowed his eyes and frowned, "Didn’t you uncover any other clues?"

Yun Shumo also shook his head wearily, "No, it’s been more than two decades. The Shangguan family didn’t keep any records of that woman, and her whereabouts are unknown."

But Yi Jue chuckled lightly, "Both of you come from prominent families, don’t you know that anyone working in a noble household has to pass rigorous background checks? Moreover, the Shangguan family has a long-standing reputation and strict standards. Even if it’s been over twenty years, they should still have records of servants from fifty years ago!"

Yun Mu was stunned, "Are you suggesting Grandpa Shangguan deceived us? That’s impossible."

Yun Shumo also remained skeptical, "This is my first encounter with Grandpa Shangguan; he shouldn’t have any reason to hide anything from me."

Yi Jue glanced at Yun Mu and took out a document, "This is the guest list from the last Shangguan family banquet. The woman you’re talking about isn’t listed, which means the woman who appeared at that banquet could only be a relative of the Shangguan family. Yun Mu, are you sure you know Shangguan Yu and the Shangguan family?"

Yun Mu looked at the list, and her expression gradually became uncertain.

"I was occupied with training during my younger years and didn’t meet Grandpa Shangguan often, but every time we met, he was very kind and understanding towards me. He’s also one of the rare individuals my father placed great trust in, who could freely enter and leave the Yun family. I’m not very familiar with the Shangguan family, but I’m fairly certain Grandpa Shangguan’s wife passed away early, he has no children, and there are no female relatives in his family."

But if that’s the case, who is that mysterious woman?

Yi Jue said gravely, "I’ll have Cheng Li continue investigating Shangguan Yu. He’s not trustworthy."

First, there was the mysterious woman at the banquet, and then it was connected to the missing baby girl from the capital over twenty years ago. It seems Shangguan Yu isn’t as innocent as he seems.

But Yun Mu shook her head, "That’s impossible. That woman might simply be a guest’s plus-one, and this servant might just be a coincidence. Grandpa Shangguan is alone, without a wife or children, and couldn’t be involved in so many things. He wouldn’t hurt me—what’s in it for him?"

"I’m not accusing him of wanting to harm you, but it’s wise to stay cautious."

"Enough," Yun Shumo interjected, "I’m hurt—can I go in, grab some water, and rest? Why do we have to talk at the doorstep?"

Yun Mu and Yi Jue exchanged glances, and the three of them entered the house together.

    On the living room sofa.

Yun Shumo took a sip of the tea served by Zhang Ma and turned his gaze to Yi Jue across from him.

"I say, Yi Jue, are you really going to let Yun Mu live with you without any commitment? Her belly is getting bigger every day!" Yun Shumo held back but couldn’t help reminding, "I’m warning you, don’t think you can take her lightly just because Yun Mu doesn’t have any elders here in the South Ming Continent. You still need to do things the right way!"

Yi Jue looked up coolly at this cheap brother-in-law, "What are you trying to say?"

"When are you two getting remarried?"

    Yun Mu, "..."

Yi Jue glanced at Yun Mu, "You’ll have to ask her about that."

"What are you talking about?" Yun Shumo frowned.

Yi Jue smiled faintly, "When I proposed, she said yes right away, but later when I asked her to go to the civil affairs bureau with me, she kept putting it off! I also want to ask, what does she mean?"

Yun Shumo looked at Yun Mu in confusion, "You don't want to get married? Why? Are you just trying to get a kid without commitment?!"

"!!!" Yun Mu gritted her teeth, "Just shut it!"

"Tell me, why don't you want to get married? Otherwise, your family will think I'm irresponsible, and I won't take the blame for that," Yi Jue pressed on.

Yun Mu, "It’s not that complicated. There are so many things that haven't been dealt with yet, and so many things happen every day. Now’s just not the time to talk about marriage."

Yi Jue's deep gaze quietly looked at her, and he spoke, "Yun Mu, is it really not the right time, or are you just scared?"

    Yun Mu's fingertips trembled slightly.

Yun Shumo also fell silent and looked at Yun Mu.

    She was scared.

She didn’t want Yi Jue to marry her, knowing she might die.

Yun Shumo suddenly felt a pang of heartache for Yun Mu, and in that moment, he realized that he truly saw her as his sister.

He cleared his throat to break the tension in the room, "With everything going on, it’s really not the time to talk about marriage. Let's talk about the important matters! Karen was almost burned alive—was that Yi Hou’s doing?"

Yi Jue retracted his gaze and nodded, "It's him."

"He's worried that after Karen joins me, we might really find the antidote? In that case, he has exposed himself—the poison isn't truly incurable!" Yun Mu said.

Yi Jue felt the same, "Since he has made his move, our plan should be advanced."

"What plan? Count me in; I also want to meet this Yi Hou." Yun Shumo said coldly.

Daring to lay a hand on someone under his protection, they must be tired of living!

"Did you tell him everything?" Yi Jue asked Yun Mu, who nodded.

Yun Mu was concerned that Yun Shumo's appearance might draw attention from the Yun family and the Yi family to the Imperial City Yun family, so he immediately refused, "This is a feud between our two families; don't get involved."

"Trying to cut ties with me?" Yun Shumo raised an eyebrow.

"No, you still need to find your sister, focus on your own business."

Yun Shumo leaned back on the sofa, speaking sarcastically, "Oh, could it be that you're tired of me having no influence in the Southern Ming Continent, dragging you down?"

"Not at all! When did you learn to be so sharp-tongued?"

Yun Shumo was taken aback, realizing that he had indeed picked up this sharpness after meeting Karen.

He coughed awkwardly, "Anyway, whatever you do, you have to include me. You're like my half-sister; I can't just watch you die!"

Yi Jue, "He's a new face, which makes him more convenient for a certain task—going to Tongzhou to bring that child back to South City."

Ji Ming is being watched by Yi Hou's people; indeed, a less conspicuous and trustworthy person is needed to bring the child back to South City.

    And...

Knowing Yun Shumo, if he really wanted in, he’d probably sneak his way in even if she said no.

Yun Mu thought for a moment and nodded, "Alright."

"That’s better," Yun Shumo stood up, "I’ll head to the hospital to see how that guy’s doing. Contact me when it’s time to act."

Yun Mu turned her gaze to Yi Jue, "Don’t you think Yun Shumo’s a little too worried about Karen?"

"Really? He’s the one who set it up and got her burned. Isn’t it normal to be concerned?"

Yun Mu frowned. Was she just being too judgmental?
