by 陈年奶泡How could one end up in jail for lifetimes to come just like that?
With the farce over, Lu Min was taken away by the Organized Crime Unit, leaving the scene deserted.
Yuan Tianbo was filled with regret. He had intended to introduce business to Chu Yuening but had instead caused her such a huge inconvenience.
Chu Yuening waved her hand, indicating that she didn't mind at all.
"Master, if it weren't for your discovery, would I have fallen victim to a large scam as well?" Yuan Tianbo still felt a chill down his spine when he recalled the incident.
"No," Chu Yuening replied. "With your experience in starting multiple businesses, Lu Min's shell company wouldn't have deceived you. You would have noticed the loopholes before investing and withdrawn promptly, severing all ties with him."
Yuan Tianbo sighed in relief and smiled. "I guess I'm not as reckless as I thought."
Lin Jiahua helped stack up the wooden tables. "I'll go buy some drinks later, Ning Ning."
Chu Yuening tilted her head. "What's up?"
"What else do you and Yi Mei like to eat?" Lin Jiahua asked with a grin. "I'll grab some snacks to celebrate as well."
Shanpo chimed in, "I'll go buy some free-range chickens too, and make a nourishing soup for Ning Ning."
Chu Yuening smiled and said, "Anything is fine, I don't have any dietary preferences." She then turned her gaze aside, addressing Yuan Tianbo, "Boss Yuan, you're welcome to join us for a casual meal."
Yuan Tianbo hastily waved his hand. "I still have some matters at home to attend to, so I'll pass. Enjoy your meal, everyone."
The group cheerfully packed up their stalls before gathering to purchase ingredients, preparing to cook at the apartment.
In the meantime.
The O Unit brought the suspect to the police station. After Shi Pingzhi completed the handover, he hurriedly went to the D Unit office to spread some gossip. Pushing open the office door, his voice entered before he did.
"Guess, guys, do you have any idea who I just brought in?"
Upon entering, Shi Pingzhi found that no one was paying him any attention.
Shi Boren was sitting cross-legged on his desk, slurping instant noodles, grumbling, "Brother Xu, we just cracked a heinous murder case, and we didn't even get a full banquet, let alone a decent meal. But instant noodles... isn't that a bit too much?"
"You could always choose not to eat," Zhou Fengxu shot back coldly.
"Alright, even more outrageous, you're asking us to live on thin air." Shi Boren swallowed a mouthful of instant noodles, holding back tears.
Shi Pingzhi entered and patted Shi Boren on the shoulder. "Do you know who O Team just brought in?"
Shi Boren, annoyed by suspense, shrugged. "All I want now is to go out and have some fun to relax. The human skin case has been stressing me out for a while."
Gan Yizu, who was organizing files, chimed in with interest, peering out from behind his desk. "Detective Shi, who did you bring in?"
"You'll definitely find this interesting," Shi Pingzhi said with a hint of intrigue. "A financial fraudster."
"That's where you're wrong. We only care about ruthless murderers," Shi Boren countered promptly.
"But," Shi Pingzhi continued, "this one was predicted by a master fortune-teller."
"Sugar Water Sister?" Shi Boren stabbed his noodles, leaped off his desk, and urged eagerly, "Come on, come on, spill the beans. I'm all ears."
Shi Pingzhi narrated the story.
"Wow! This is quite something, hard to ignore," Shi Boren commented appreciatively.
Gan Yizu paused in his cleaning and asked, "How does Master Chu manage to be so accurate with her impromptu readings?"
Uncle Zhong, leaning against the window reading the newspaper, also looked up. "That swindler just happened to cross paths with her – he can consider himself unlucky."
The trio turned their attention to Zhou Fengxu, who was writing the final report on the murder case. Shi Boren approached and playfully took away his pen.
"Brother Xu, I recall there are still plenty of old, unsolved cases in the archives, right? Why not take them all to Temple Street?"
The image entertained Shi Boren.
"Just imagine, Sweet Soup Girl looking through the files while giving readings, and we'll handle the arrests. How relaxing would that be?"
Upon hearing Shi Boren's suggestion, Gan Yizu nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that way, the police station wouldn't have any unsolved cases anymore. The culprits would be caught, and the victims' injustices would be redressed. Sounds great!"
"Not so fast," Uncle Zhong put down his newspaper. "Master only does two readings a day. Do you think it's like tap water, always available? Overloading herself with work is harmful to her health!"
"Fortune-telling has its drawbacks and deficiencies; at best, it affects oneself, at worst, one's family. You're police officers with a royal mandate, yet you're contemplating relying on others for everything? Why not quit being cops and learn fortune-telling if you think it's so easy?"
Seeing that the conversation had reached a dead end, Shi Boren sighed. "I knew it was wishful thinking, just a hypothetical scenario."
Zhou Fengxu sat at his desk, inserted the completed report into a folder, and closed it.
"You could also speculate about losing your job and scavenging for trash back home."
With a playful grin, Shi Boren replied, "I said it's just a speculation."
Before leaving, Shi Pingzhi turned back to add, "By the way, I heard a gossip. Chu Ji's dessert shop gave a fortune to the second-in-command of the Fourteen Gang! They predicted he'll face a major calamity in three days!"
"Fourteen Gang? Isn't that the criminal syndicate you've been investigating lately? Something to do with money laundering?" Shi Boren vaguely recalled the case.
Shi Pingzhi nodded. "The leader of the Fourteen Gang is likely involved in a massive money laundering scheme, but we haven't found any solid evidence yet."
"We've arrested quite a few of their henchmen, all vicious criminals." Shi Boren glanced at Zhou Fengxu, who had lifted his head. "If they're talking about violence and calamities, won't that ghostly second-in-command take his anger out on the dessert girl after his prediction comes true?"
Zhou Fengxu passed the folder to Shi Boren. "Take this to Madam."
"Yes, sir!" Shi Boren saluted, his jovial expression instantly turning serious.
After delivering the folder, Shi Boren looked through the window at the parking lot. The SUV was gone. Turning back, he asked, "Brother Xu left so early? Where did he go?"
Gan Yizu shrugged, neatly stacking the documents from the filing cabinet. "I'm not sure."
