    Chapter Index

With his years of experience as a police officer, Shi Boren immediately connected the dark stains on the check to the possibility of dried blood from the victim splattered onto it.

"As for the dark marks on the check, they might be the victim's blood. We'll send it to the forensics department for analysis later."

Chu Yuening, after drawing so many runes, felt a slight mental exhaustion. A Paralyzing Charm required more virtue and energy than other protective charms. She removed the tissue from her face, her fingers still wrapped around it. "No problem, as long as it can be of assistance."

Shi Boren got up to tidy the workspace. Once he was off duty, he shed his police demeanor. Recalling the talismans flying out of the bank entrance, he found Ning Ning incredibly cool. He flashed a mischievous grin again.

"Hey, Ning Ning, can you teach me that move you did at the door?"

"What move?" Chu Yuening tilted her head, confused.

"That one." Shi Boren demonstrated with his hand in the air, slithering like a snake, his left eye squinting as he focused ahead. "Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh! It was so cool how they flew out of thin air, almost like a superpower."

    Chu Yuening chuckled.

Back at the bank, she had held back because of this very reason.

Controlling talismans was different from fortune-telling; it defied gravity, challenging people's conventional understanding of the world. It resembled a supernatural ability, and she genuinely worried about being perceived as strange by others.

Fortunately, no one had the audacity to attempt slicing her just yet.

    In that moment,

a voice echoed from the entrance of the office.

"Brother Ren, give it a rest."

Gan Yizu entered with a bag of takeout, grinning from ear to ear. He had sprinted across several streets to gather an assortment of food, all to ensure that the hero wouldn't go hungry.

"Yuening's techniques... It'd be tough for us to master them in our lifetimes," Gan Yizu commented, though his expression was filled with yearning. "Who wouldn't want to control runes with their aura? If I could learn it, I wouldn't need to carry a pistol – bullets in my pocket would suffice. I could even manipulate them like a machine gun, effortlessly taking down those former top marksmen from police academy."

Just as the two were lost in their fantasies,

Chu Yuening shook her head, bringing them back down to earth with a single statement.

"It won't work. You both lack the innate talent for mysticism."

Their spirits dampened instantly, and their shoulders slumped.

"Never mind, it doesn't really matter," Gan Yizu said as he placed the items he had bought on the table. After arranging them, he grinned and said, "Sis Ning, Li's milk tea, Yan's roasted meats, and Lin's congee—these are all the most famous shops in the vicinity. You must be hungry after using so much energy with the talismans just now, right?"

"I am indeed a bit hungry," Chu Yuening replied, taking the milk tea and roasted meat. Her slightly pale face, due to the depletion of her magical power, lit up with a smile.

"Someone bringing food just when I'm hungry—thank you, Yizu. Life is truly beautiful!"

She didn't bother being polite and opened the roasted meat, the luscious color of the char siu stimulating her appetite. The weariness from drawing the talismans vanished in an instant.

"You're welcome," Gan Yizu said, rubbing the back of his head bashfully. He chuckled and added, "Go ahead and eat, Sis Ning. If it's not enough, I'll get more."

"Woah." Shi Boren took out a bowl of congee, and as he lifted the lid, the rich aroma of seafood wafted toward him. Stirring it with a spoon, he commented, "I haven't seen you this attentive since you've been here. Calling her 'Sis Ning' all the time, yet you're only a month older than Ning Ning."

"Age doesn't count; it's about who's more capable. Whoever is stronger gets to be the big sister, that's how it works," Gan Yizu said, grinning and giving a thumbs-up.

    Come on.

Sis Ning had saved everyone in the bank, she was a hero at the Kowloon Bay Police Station.

How could one not treat him like a revered Buddha?

    Finally.

The office door was pushed open once more.

Upon seeing the arrival, Shi Boren and Gan Yizu ceased their jesting, adopting serious expressions.

"Brother Xu, are you alright physically?"

Shi Boren was the first to inquire.

Heaven only knew how terrified he had been at the brink of the explosion; his heart nearly stopped beating.

"No worries," Zhou Fengxu replied, holding the report in hand. His gaze swept around the office, and upon noticing that the person by the window was unharmed, he breathed a sigh of relief.

Upon returning to the police station, he immediately reported to Madam and attended to Yan Lei's matters, leaving no time for himself. His 3-to-7 parted hairstyle was now disheveled, with a strand of hair that was once held in place by hair gel now hanging down like a comma. The elbows of his leather jacket and the knees of his jeans were worn out and torn from the friction against the ground during his struggle with Yan Lei.

    In short,

The suave and composed Officer Zhou now appeared disheveled.

"Did you finish the statements from inside the bank?"

Zhou Fengxu placed the report on his desk, his gaze inadvertently drawn to the girl sitting by the window. Apparently hungry, she was focused on her meal, taking small bites that seemed aesthetically pleasing.

"We've got them all," Shi Boren picked up the thick stack of notebooks on the table, patting them in his palm. "Those from the bank had intermittent amnesia, so we missed quite a bit. Luckily, Ning Ning helped fill in the gaps. Brother Xu, how about Yan Lei's statement?"

"He's already confessed. Keep trying to contact Li Qi's family to identify the body," Zhou Fengxu sat down to start writing the final report. Suddenly, he noticed the paper towel wrapped around Chu Yuening's finger, his expression startled.

He capped the fountain pen he had just uncapped.

    He couldn't continue the report.

    Ten minutes later.

Zhou Fengxu approached the window carrying a first-aid kit.

With her bandaged fingers, Chu Yuening held chopsticks, in front of her an open bowl of congee and various roasted meats. Blinking, she asked, "Officer Zhou? Would you like to join me?"

"I'm not hungry." Zhou Fengxu fixed his gaze on the spot where the tissue was wrapped, suppressing the urge to pull her hand closer, maintaining his gentlemanly composure. "May I see your hand?"

"Hmm?" Chu Yuening put down her chopsticks and flexed her middle finger, the one adorned with the tissue. "Oh, it's nothing, just a tiny cut."
