by 陈年奶泡Yu Feiyang purchased a large box of chocolates and a big bouquet of roses. Nervously, he made his way to the lakeside, mustering all his courage.
"Dan Dan, I've kept you waiting."
He was exceptionally anxious.
Recalling Master Chu Da's words, Yu Feiyang felt a surge of nervousness, his palms damp with sweat from holding the chocolates. As time passed, his affection for Dan Dan deepened. Even if there were unforeseen circumstances after his confession, he was willing to take that risk.
The woman by the lake finally turned around. She was dressed in a pink cheongsam, holding an oiled paper umbrella. With the wind blowing, her white veil lifted gently.
"It's alright, I haven't been waiting long."
Her voice was serene, without any fluctuations.
It was as light and fleeting as a gentle breeze.
Chapter 50
The moonlight was cold and clear.
The wind by the lake was strong, and Yu Feiyang pulled Dan Dan's hand, which was as cold as something frozen in a fridge. He drew her away and put her hand into his jacket pocket.
His warm palm rubbed against her icy one repeatedly.
Yet, he could never quite transmit his warmth to her.
Feeling concerned, Yu Feiyang said, "It's chilly by the lake. How many times have I told you? Why do you always like to wait here?"
Dan Dan gazed at him quietly. Her clear eyes, accompanied by the ripples on the lake, seemed to be smiling at Yu Feiyang, yet her voice remained level.
"I'm afraid you won't find me if I change the spot."
"How could that be? You're always waiting in the bamboo grove, and it's not a big area. Even if I searched every single bamboo, I'd still locate you."
Dan Dan looked at the large bouquet of roses Yu Feiyang was holding. The bright red flowers stood out vividly in the dark night, with dewdrops sparkling on each plump petal.
She remarked, "They're beautiful."
As Yu Feiyang prepared to give her the roses, Dan Dan had already shifted her gaze, holding up her oil-paper umbrella and turning around. "I'll take you home. Follow me."
Home!
Yu Feiyang's excitement made his hairs stand on end. Did Dan Dan taking him home mean that she had already accepted him as a person?
Wouldn't the chances of his confession succeeding be close to a hundred percent now?
"Still not coming?" The woman, holding a paper umbrella and wearing a veil, gazed back at him calmly.
"At once," Yu Feiyang dismissed his thoughts and hurried to catch up.
Dan Dan's house wasn't far from the bamboo grove. Yu Feiyang only recalled passing through the dark bamboo forest before seeing a circle of light, then turning a corner to behold an enormous old mansion.
The bricks were a bluish-gray, and the roof was still covered with black tiles. Majestic stone lions stood guard on either side of the entrance to the old mansion.
"So old-fashioned?" Yu Feiyang was surprised.
It had been a long time since he had seen such an ancient and distinctive old mansion in Hong Kong. Most of them had been demolished and rebuilt in the past few decades.
Dan Dan, holding her paper umbrella, stepped up the stairs first. "Yes, it's my grandfather's house. It was built during the Qing dynasty."
"Your family takes great care of this place," Yu Feiyang commented as he followed her up the steps. Passing by the two stone lions, their glaring eyes seemed ominously intimidating.
Unnoticed by all, the lions' eyes, as big as copper bells, shifted slightly towards Yu Feiyang's direction.
Upon entering the main gate, a maid approached to take Dan Dan's oiled paper umbrella.
The maid's attire was peculiar; despite the weather not being particularly cold yet, she was already dressed in a grayish-black cotton robe, with her hair neatly braided and polished with wood shavings.
"Miss, Master and Madam are in the back garden," she informed, her face as pale as her words.
Lost in thoughts about his confession, Yu Feiyang hadn't found the right moment to present the flower. As the maid tried to take the umbrella from him, he hastily declined.
With both hands holding the umbrella horizontally, the maid gazed intently at Yu Feiyang. This made Yu Feiyang's spine tingle, prompting him to quickly call out, "Dan Dan, wait for me."
Speaking, he carried the roses and chocolates, following Dan Dan as they entered the main room and then exited through the back door, revealing a courtyard brimming with flowers.
Moonlight cascaded over the white magnolias, and the more Yu Feiyang gazed, the more familiar they seemed. He felt like he had seen these blossoms somewhere before.
After a moment of pondering, Yu Feiyang shook his head.
"It must be an illusion. It's not strange to find the magnolias familiar since they're common everywhere."
Just as this thought crossed his mind, he heard Dan Dan calling out. Yu Feiyang followed her.
Before them stood an enormous Han jade table intricately carved with elaborate patterns. Surprisingly, not only did the house exude an antique charm, but even the table was exceptionally distinctive.
Yu Feiyang couldn't help but take a few more glances.
"Feiyang, come meet my parents," Dan Dan invited.
Raising his head, Yu Feiyang looked towards the table.
Seated beside the Han jade table were two middle-aged individuals, both dressed in black attire.
Dan Dan continued, "Father, Mother, this is the Feiyang I've been telling you about."
The middle-aged man gazed intently at Yu Feiyang for a moment before forcing a smile, "Yes, yes."
"Handsome and promising, not bad at all."
The middle-aged woman had a side-swept fringe with a wave, and she wore a black velvet qipao with buttons fastened tightly to the collar, constricting her neck. Yet, she seemed unperturbed, her thick foundation and bright red lips accentuating her appearance.
She rose and extended her hand to take Yu Feiyang's slowly.
Yu Feiyang was surprised.
The woman's hand was as cold as Dan Dan's.
Could it be some kind of familial trait?
It seemed he would have to prepare more nourishing soups for Dan Dan in the future.
"Very well," the middle-aged woman assessed Yu Feiyang intently, her red lips curving gradually, "Handsome and promising, indeed."
Their words echoed each other identically.
"Th-Thank you very much for your high praise, Uncle and Aunt," Yu Feiyang said without finding it odd, though he felt slightly uneasy inside.
He secretly glanced at Dan Dan and noticed her standing quietly by, gazing at him. He couldn't help but silently breathe a sigh of relief.
Well, that's good too. At the very least, Dan Dan's parents don't seem to dislike him. Any feedback is better than none.
