"Meng Zhengming scoffed, "I'd be driven to madness by you all. If rumors were reliable, I could fly to the moon myself, why would I need a spaceship?"
The door to the Forensics Department office swung open.
Zhou Fengxu entered with a stern face, his gaze sweeping across the room. The atmosphere instantly chilled.
Colleagues exchanged uneasy glances.
"Officer Zhou," Meng Zhengming stepped down from his desk, also greeting awkwardly, "Officer Zhou."
Zhou Fengxu ignored him, his voice turning colder with each word, "Team D has never hired useless personnel. Inspector Liang had to bow his head to request a position. Yet, you shirk responsibility, complain about the workload, and blame unfinished tasks on your efficiency. That's an issue with your own productivity."
"In this situation, I believe you're not suited for work in the Forensics Department. You should seriously consider changing careers."
Of course Meng Zhengming was familiar with the notorious Detective Yan from Team D, known for his ruthless adherence to the law in handling cases. He also feared that the other party might actually report him, leading to the loss of his job.
Any resentment had to be swallowed, unexpressed.
Meng Zhengming chuckled awkwardly. "I was just bored, so I blurted it out."
"A casual remark?" Zhou Fengxu's handsome face grew even colder. "Do you understand that rumors can sometimes be deadly? Once you don the uniform of the Royal Hong Kong Police, you have a duty to be loyal and responsible."
Faced with the criticism, Meng Zhengming lacked the courage to retaliate and instead looked around nervously.
The female colleague glanced awkwardly between Meng Zhengming and Chu Yuening, realizing that she was the new recruit of Team D. Apologetically, she said, "Sorry, we didn't mean to discuss it in your presence."
Seeing that it was a girl, Chu Yuening's eyes softened as she smiled. "I'll let you off this time."
"Wow, you're so nice." Guo Yingying was instantly charmed and hurried over. She gazed at the sportswear and exclaimed, "Did you go for a workout early in the morning?"
"I wish I could exercise to lose weight too, but I just can't seem to get out of bed. Can you invite me next time?"
Chu Yuening replied with a gentle smile, "Sure, I can do that."
It was at this very moment.
In a hurry, Shi Boren called out from the stairway, "Brother Xu, there's been a murder case in the Jinfeng residential building at Central-Harbor City. A resident has reported it. MADM wants Team D to head over immediately."
Zhou Fengxu's expression turned serious as he exchanged a glance with Chu Yuening.
"Let's go!"
After everyone had left,
Meng Zhengming poked his head out the window again, just in time to see the members of Team D dash to their cars. His lips curled downward as he whispered, "If you're so cool, don't send evidence to the Forensic Department. Go find a master to help solve the case. Do they really think they can crack it that way? In the end, aren't we the ones who will have to step in?"
He was convinced that Chu Yuening was only there because of connections.
Why else would she join the police force if not for the high salary? He didn't believe in solving cases through fortune-telling.
Finished with his thoughts, he raised his head and said, "Come on, come on, let's make a guess. How long do you think it'll take for Team D, with their new recruit, to solve this case?"
Su Shun sighed and stood up, patting Meng Zhengming's shoulder. "Don't be so arrogant next time. Words can bring trouble."
Meng Zhengming shrugged, waved his hand, and pulled out a stack of Hong Kong dollars to call out to his colleagues, "Come on, come on, place your bets."
Sure enough, two of them came over to join in.
"One of you thinks how many days? I bet it'll be done within two days."
Meng Zhengming's guess of two days was reasonable.
D Squad's record for the fastest case solved was precisely two days, which was already considered very swift.
How much faster could it possibly be than that?
Chapter 142
At Zhonggang City, Building B of Jinfeng Residential Area.
When D Squad arrived, the crime scene had already been cordoned off. Beyond the police tape, the flower beds were surrounded by residents of Jinfeng, their voices buzzing with chatter.
A few ladies huddled together, looking towards the second floor, fear palpable as they patted their chests.
"In broad daylight, how could such a thing happen?"
"It's still Teacher Chen who passed away. Oh dear, good people truly don't live long."
"Just a quick glance, and the ground was covered in blood." The lady spoke with trembling hands, her face filled with horror. "It's so terrifying, truly terrifying."
Spotting Group D approaching, the lady hastily grabbed Zhou Fengxu's arm, her face flushed with fear. "Officer, you must solve this case quickly. With something like this happening in Jinfeng Estate, we won't be able to sleep as long as the culprit isn't caught."
"Everyone, please rest assured."
Zhou Fengxu surveyed the area, making a promise to the citizens. "We'll apprehend the criminal as soon as possible and restore peace to society."
After speaking,
Zhou Fengxu pulled out his ID from his coat and showed it to the uniformed officer guarding the area. He then lifted the police tape and entered the corridor, followed by Uncle Zhong, Shi Boren, and Gan Yizu.
In situations like these, Chu Yuening usually remained outside. Just as she was about to lift the tape, the uniformed officer promptly raised his hand to remind her.
"I'm sorry, Miss, unauthorized personnel are not allowed on the scene."
"Oh, I do have my credentials."
With that, Chu Yuening took out her ID from her pocket. The military officer, suspicious of her unfamiliar face, approached for a closer look. Upon verifying the authenticity of her ID, he apologized and lifted the caution tape to let her through.
Beyond the cordon, apart from curious onlookers, numerous media journalists had also rushed to the scene. Spotting a new face in Team D, they hastily raised their cameras.
A Hong Kong news reporter examined the snapshots, capturing the girl's profile. With her striking beauty, her mere side view could outshine many popular actresses in the film industry.
She commented with a smile, "She seems promising. She has more than enough looks to be a model, not just a police officer. It remains to be seen how capable she is at handling cases."
Another journalist leaned over for a look. The more he stared, the more the girl's face seemed familiar to him. He pondered aloud, "I feel like I've seen her somewhere. Where was it?"
A vague memory surfaced in his mind: the red carpet event of the Hong Kong beauty pageant, where a master had appeared alongside Miss Xu's eldest daughter.
As the memory became clearer, the journalist grew increasingly excited.
"Aha, I remember now! The one who just went in was Master Chu. Could it be that she's not here as a master but as a detective to solve the case?"
