He wore a white T-shirt layered under a light-colored, loose denim jacket. Taking a few steps forward, he noticed that Ning Ning wasn't following and promptly retreated a step. His stern face softened as a smile began to form in his eyes.
"Come on, Ning Ning, I'll take you to Madam to get your identification."
"Coming." Chu Yuening caught up.
The two walked side by side down the long corridor.
After Zhou Fengxu finished his fried rice noodle roll, Chu Yuening noticed him looking around for something to wipe his hands on. She promptly offered him a tissue.
Zhou Fengxu accepted it without hesitation, wiping his hands clean. Gazing at the smiling Chu Yuening, whose expression was directed towards his right shoulder, he stuffed the used tissue into his pocket and cleared his throat.
He then reached up to rub the back of his neck.
"You don't have to come to the police station every day. When Team D encounters a case they can't solve, I'll call you."
"I know." Chu Yuening's face lit up. "Superintendent Leung already discussed this with me last night. I still have my feng shui shop, so I can't dedicate all my time here. It's better if I just hold a position for easier coordination later on."
She relied on good karma for her cultivation and to offset karma. Most cases dealt with by the Major Case Squad were murder investigations. By helping to solve them, she would gain more opportunities to accumulate good karma.
This was also the reason why she agreed to take up her post at the police station.
"Good to know," Zhou Fengxu hurriedly averted his gaze, feeling flustered.
He couldn't explain why he usually found it exhausting to crack a smile, but today, he couldn't stop the corners of his lips from curling up when he saw Ning Ning.
As they conversed, the two of them had already arrived outside the inspector's office.
Zhou Fengxu knocked on the door.
After a short while,
Shi Yubing's voice echoed from inside the office.
"Come in."
When Shi Yubing looked up from the stack of files, she saw the tall Police Officer Zhou standing side by side with the girl at the door - one handsome and charismatic, the other youthful and charming.
Shi Yubing wedged her pen between her fingers, a smile blossoming on her efficient face.
Indeed, a beautiful lady is a delight to the eyes.
Team D really can't consist solely of a bunch of unpleasant men; it's disheartening to see them every day.
"Documents, right?"
Zhou Fengxu entered, "Are you ready?"
"As soon as Inspector Liang sent the notice, we immediately arranged for it. Of course, I'm ready."
Shi Yubing pulled open a drawer, took out a form, and personally handed it to Chu Yuening, smiling gracefully, "Welcome to the big family of Team D."
Chu Yuening took the document with both hands. On it was written "Hong Kong Royal Police Appointment Certificate" in large letters, followed by her name and rank, with an empty space beside it.
She blinked in confusion.
"It's for your ID photo," Madam explained.
Upon hearing this, Chu Yuening looked up, "There's still a need for an ID photo?"
Shi Yubing nodded. "The IDs were done urgently, so there wasn't time to wait for you to take a new photo. When you have free time, ask Inspector Zhou to bring you here again for a replacement. For now, let Inspector Zhou show you around."
Chu Yuening acknowledged with an "oh" and left with her ID in hand.
Half a day later.
Zhou Fengxu had already taken Chu Yuening on a tour of several areas – the interrogation rooms, morgue, autopsy room, and the forensic department.
It was Chu Yuening's first time thoroughly exploring a police station, and she looked around with curiosity.
Walking ahead, Zhou Fengxu noticed that she wasn't following and turned back to say, "This building up ahead is the Forensic Science Department. They usually work closely with the Major Crimes Unit."
"Their main responsibilities include fingerprint identification, forensic photography, and DNA analysis. They help us find solid and reliable evidence from crime scenes to present in court as professional and credible proof."
Chu Yuening found it fascinating.
In her view, everything could be calculated, and finding evidence through scientific means to support a case was a remarkable feat.
However, they had yet to enter the forensic department's office.
An awkward incident unfolded.
Voices filtered through the door in snippets.
"Hey, have you heard? Inspector Leung went out and invited some fortune-teller to join us!"
"Inspector Leung must be losing his marbles. What's a fortune-teller doing in CID? Can they really solve a murder case by divination?"
" CID should hire competent technicians, not this nonsense. They keep sending us piles of materials; we're swamped until late into the night."
The forensic team, clad in lab coats, had finished their pressing tasks and gathered around the office for gossip.
In the center, a man, roughly in his thirties, sat on a desk, rambling on.
"Exactly, why are you all afraid to say it? No matter which department, we in the lab are the ones who ultimately help solve cases, aren't we? Instead of wasting money on charlatans, they should give us more bonuses."
"Lower your voice," said a young man working on his computer, looking up. "Inspector Leung is quite particular about newcomers. This guy must have some real skills."
"I heard he didn't sleep all last night and showed up this morning with bags under his eyes. The first thing he did was call Division D to ask if that divine entity had arrived."
The young man was named Su Shun. His cousin, who also worked in the police inspector's office, had received some insider information and shared it with him as gossip.
After all, who didn't know that Inspector Liang was notoriously strict and fair?
Anyone worthy of his personal invitation must be extraordinary.
"Mighty one? I think he's more like a charlatan," Meng Zhengming scoffed. "Inspector Liang probably pulled some strings to get him in."
"I don't think so," a female colleague, who was examining her skin in a mirror, interjected upon hearing Meng Zhengming's increasingly harsh words. She put down the mirror to defend the newcomer. "I heard from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau that during the recent bank hostage situation, a master used mystic arts to save people. Could it be that Inspector Liang has invited this same person?"
Meng Zhengming found the idea preposterous. "Have you been watching too many sci-fi movies? Mystic arts saving people? How does that work? Can talismans fly up and beg the culprit not to detonate the bomb?"
