Team A, having taken on Mu Xingwang's case, had been tirelessly sifting through documents. As expected, Mu Xingwang seemed to have made enemies every year from childhood to adulthood.
This further confirmed Zhao Jun's suspicion.
Chu Yuening must have been one of them.
She was the one who had meticulously planned to kill Zhao Jun.
Chu Yuening yawned again, leaning back in her chair, half-asleep. She had returned late last night, and after setting up her stall early today, she had barely done any business before being dragged to the police station.
She sighed helplessly.
Perhaps she really had a connection with the police?
"I want to reiterate that I had never met Mu Xingwang before our encounter during his fortune-telling session. Our life paths had no intersecting points."
"Moreover," Chu Yuening added promptly, casting a glance around at the plainclothes officers. Each of them watched her intently, as if they were afraid she would escape.
"If you suspect me, you've surely investigated my background as well since you took the time to look into Mu Xingwang's life, right? I'm not a native of Hong Kong, so how could I possibly have had the chance to bear a grudge against him?"
Chu Yuening turned her gaze back to Zhao Jun at the interrogation table. "Hmm?"
Fixing his eyes on the yawning girl, annoyance flickered across Zhao Jun's face. "Is this the police station? You can yawn whenever you please?"
"Relax," Zhao Jun picked up another file and scanned it from top to bottom. "Chu Yangjia, once humiliated by Mu Xingwang who used his face to polish shoes. What's your relationship with him?"
"Sharing the same surname necessarily means we're related?" Chu Yuening laughed in exasperation.
"Well, for all we know, Chu Yangjia might be your elder brother, still nursing the grudge from that shoe-polishing incident. He hired you from the mainland to help him avoid suspicion," Zhao Jun spun a tale.
"A fine storyteller you are, Detective Zhao," Chu Yuening smiled. "Are you planning to pin a crime on me even if I'm innocent?"
"I wouldn't dare," Zhao Jun suppressed his anger. "Coercion isn't my style. The convicts I interrogate always end up signing their confessions willingly. As royal police, we must uphold the law."
"Where were you on the night of November 24th? Any witnesses?"
"In Garden Estate."
"What were you doing in Garden Estate?"
"A ritual," Chu Yuening answered promptly.
"Ritual?" Zhao Jun scoffed. "Are you addicted to playing the role of a mystic master? You're taking this too far. Where's your witness?"
"Kang Nancy, Andy, and the elderly couple in Garden Estate can vouch for me," Chu Yuening added. "If you're interested, you'll find plenty of evidence."
The plainclothes officer shot Chu Yuening a cold glance. "We've already verified that you were together before nine. Mu Xingwang left the police station at exactly nine o'clock."
In other words,
Mu Xingwang was murdered after he left the police station at nine.
If she couldn't provide any witnesses for the time after nine,
Chu Yuening would still be under suspicion.
"Mr. Wei Yanlin from Tung Chai Street has been with me the whole time. He can vouch for me." Chu Yuening felt a headache coming on. Just as she had dealt with the chaos, she was now faced with endless questioning without a moment's respite.
Zhao Jun sneered, "You've actually reminded me. According to eyewitness accounts, Mr. Wei has been with you since before you started your fortune-telling stall. The police have grounds to suspect that you two are working together."
With that, Zhao Jun instructed his colleagues to take Wei Yanlin along with them.
"Miss Chu still has some truths left untold. Perhaps you should reconsider your answers more carefully."
After saying this, Zhao Jun rose and left the interrogation room.
Mu Kuan's secretary stepped forward and whispered, "Detective Zhao, Mr. Mu is waiting in his office. He wishes to meet Miss Chu."
"And, Mr. Mu hopes that the murderer of Young Master will be brought to justice soon. He would appreciate it if Detective Zhao could exert more effort."
Under a dim yellow light, a hand obscured the glow.
Only after Mu Kuan was seated did the secretary remove their hand.
"Miss Chu."
Chu Yuening frowned, not responding.
"Might you have heard about the misfortune that befell my son?" Mu Kuan spoke calmly, not in a rush. "It happened only a few hours after your reading – he was brutally attacked."
"Your son?" Chu Yuening shot back sarcastically. "I must commend you, Mr. Mu, for being so candid when discussing such a matter as one's spouse being unfaithful."
Mu Kuan's eyes gleamed with ferocity. Perhaps no one had dared to bring up the incident since it occurred, and even his wife had hastily left the Mu residence to avoid any repercussions, leaving her own child's death unchecked.
He was unexpectedly being publicly exposed for his shortcomings.
Especially by someone as young and inexperienced as her.
Mu Kuan concealed his radiance, "After all, the Mu family has nurtured Xingwang for many years, investing much effort in his upbringing. Although he is not my biological son, he is no less than one to me. Bloodline is but another form of connection; what binds me to him more deeply is familial affection."
When Mu Kuan heard of Mu Xingwang's demise, he was devastated, realizing that even though he wasn't his biological son, the years of nurturing made it hard to sever ties with the Mu family.
With numerous media outlets currently focusing on the Mu family, he knew that his past mistakes, if unearthed, could lead to the downfall of the family.
To prevent the matter from digging deeper.
An urgent need for a culprit to quell the uproar.
In every aspect, Chu Yuening was the most suitable choice.
"The child raised by the Mu family can't just die tragically without reason."
Chu Yuening asked, "What about the others who died tragically?"
She gave a cold laugh.
"What about the girl who jumped off the building? Was her death allowed to have a cause? There's always a head to every grievance, and a master to every debt. Not only does Mu Xingwang owe, but you all still owe debts that haven't been repaid."
Mu Kuan's grim expression struck fear. After a long while, he chuckled. "Miss Chu really has a great sense of humor. Xingwang has always been kind-hearted. What forceful suicide? Do you have any evidence?"
"You think you can defame Xingwang with fortune-telling and a journalist? How laughable."
