Chapter 79: The Start of School
by 一盞紅爐Chapter 79: The Start of School
Although Ye Xiaoxiao had no immediate plans to return to the family compound, her life was quite fulfilling. Lately, she had been studying medicine with Song Guangjing and even had the opportunity to practice at Rendetang.
The capital was bustling and beautiful, offering a lot more entertainment options compared to her time in Baishi Village.
What Ye Xiaoxiao appreciated the most was the presence of electric lights here.
Unlike Baishi Village, where once it got dark, you couldn’t do anything.
On the day she had to report to school, Lu Hanchuan arrived early in the morning.
He wasn’t wearing his uniform, but he still stood out.
Ye Xiaoxiao, on the other hand, wore the red dress her sister-in-law made for her.
Her fair skin made the red dress pop on her, the dress cinched at her slender waist, showing off her fair, shapely calves.
Her black, straight hair fell casually over her shoulders, and when she smiled, her eyes sparkled like stars in the sky, with a sparkle in them.
It was Lu Hanchuan’s first time seeing her in a dress, and his gaze lingered for a long time.
"You’re really going to take me?" Ye Xiaoxiao asked uncertainly.
Lu Hanchuan smiled, "I’m here, aren’t I? How could it be fake?"
"Alright, I’ll grab my stuff," Ye Xiaoxiao said.
"Let me help you," Lu Hanchuan offered.
Song Guangjing, who had planned to take Ye Xiaoxiao himself: "..."
"Remember to enroll in the Traditional Chinese Medicine department of the medical school, don’t let those studying Western medicine snatch you away," Song Guangjing warned her with concern.
"Don’t worry, Master, I won’t change my mind," Ye Xiaoxiao assured him.
Song Guangjing took out an envelope and handed it to Ye Xiaoxiao.
"The big red envelope I promised you for getting into Jinghua University, use it for spending money."
"Thank you, Master," Ye Xiaoxiao said, feeling how thick the envelope was. It didn’t seem like just pocket money.
Song Guangjing waved them off, telling them to hurry up.
He was starting to get a headache every time he saw that Lu guy.
At the entrance of Jinghua University, it was bustling today, with freshmen and upperclassmen welcoming them. Lu Hanchuan’s car couldn’t even get close and had to be parked on the side of the road.
Once inside, there were seniors holding signs to guide them, making it obvious where each college’s registration was.
Ye Xiaoxiao went to the medical department to inquire about the registration location for the Traditional Chinese Medicine major.
The upperclassman said apologetically, "The Traditional Chinese Medicine major has too few enrollments this year, so it’s grouped with the Clinical Medicine students. Fill out this form and then pick up your dorm key."
Ye Xiaoxiao was silent for a moment.
Okay, okay.
Song Guangjing had a point.
She couldn’t be the only girl in this major, could she?
A six-person dorm, but there weren’t even six girls in the Traditional Chinese Medicine major.
Ye Xiaoxiao picked up her dorm key and headed to the girls’ dorm with Lu Hanchuan.
They turned heads along the way, with many sneaking glances at the striking pair.
The glances were fleeting and discreet, with whispers starting only after they’d walked by.
Though Ye Xiaoxiao had been a college student in her past life, the 1980s campus had a charm all its own.
Students wore blue cotton outfits, green military jackets, floral dresses...
Every now and then, they’d see students biking across campus—it was all so picturesque.
Ye Xiaoxiao’s dorm was Room 206 in Building 6 of the girls’ dorms.
Since it was move-in day, boys were allowed in the girls’ dorms to help with luggage.
The school didn’t supply bedding, so students had to bring their own.
This made moving in a real hassle.
When they opened the door, no one else had arrived—Ye Xiaoxiao was the first.
The dorm was fairly clean, with four top bunks, two bottom bunks, and the rest of the space taken up by desks, chairs, and wardrobes.
Lu Hanchuan asked, "Top or bottom bunk?"
Most students went for the lower bunk, but Ye Xiaoxiao said, "I’ll take the top—I don’t want anyone sitting on my bed."
Lu Hanchuan set up the bedding on the top bunk for her.
Ye Xiaoxiao stood on her toes: "I’ve got this."
Lu Hanchuan glanced at her: "Easy to manage in a skirt?"
Ye Xiaoxiao paused, then said, "Thanks."
Once Lu Hanchuan was done, Ye Xiaoxiao unpacked her suitcase into the wardrobe and locked it.
She then tidied up her desk with her essentials.
While she was settling in, two more classmates showed up.
Li Meiru had short hair and glasses, while Tang Xiuxiu wore her hair in a high ponytail.
Both had come alone, and after a quick hello, they started unpacking.
They both went for the lower bunks.
Ye Xiaoxiao turned to Lu Hanchuan: "Let’s take a walk." It wasn’t right for him to stick around while the girls unpacked.
It felt awkward just standing around in the dorm room.
Lu Hanchuan nodded since Ye Xiaoxiao was all settled in.
“Let’s check what’s missing and grab it from the store by the entrance.”
Ye Xiaoxiao: “I didn’t bring a thermos or a basin.”
She had planned to pick up these little things after getting to school.
With Lu Hanchuan around, she had an extra pair of hands.
As they stepped out of the dorm, they heard voices behind them.
Li Meiru nudged Tang Xiuxiu’s shoulder, “Our roommate’s gorgeous. Do you think the guy with her is her boyfriend or her brother? He’s so handsome, like a movie star.”
Tang Xiuxiu, slightly thrown off balance, admitted she was stunned by the people in the dorm when she first walked in.
But in response to Li Meiru’s teasing, she only said, “Definitely her boyfriend. They look perfect together. Don’t get jealous.”
Li Meiru: “I was just wondering. How do you know he’s her boyfriend?”
Tang Xiuxiu smiled and said, “My brother doesn’t look at me like that.”
…
“Want to grab something to eat first?”
It was almost noon, and after leaving the dorm, Ye Xiaoxiao suggested.
Lu Hanchuan didn’t hesitate: “Let’s go.”
They ate at a little restaurant near the entrance of Jinghua University. As they ate, they kept catching people glancing their way.
Ye Xiaoxiao wasn’t shy, but she didn’t like being stared at.
After finishing up, they left.
Unnoticed by them, someone was watching from behind.
Lu Hanchuan and Ye Xiaoxiao hit up the store by the entrance and got everything they needed.
Ye Xiaoxiao also picked up some fabric to make into a bed curtain.
After they finished shopping, Lu Hanchuan walked her back to the dorm.
He dropped the stuff at the dorm entrance and got ready to head out.
“Today was kind of rushed. Next time, I’ll make time to properly take you out for a meal.”
Lu Hanchuan: “Go ahead in. Call me if you need anything—or even if you don’t.”
Ye Xiaoxiao waved and said, “Alright, I’m heading in.”
Lu Hanchuan gave a nod.
Ye Xiaoxiao turned and walked into the dorm.
Two more people were in the dorm, and Ye Xiaoxiao introduced herself.
These two are He Jing and Xia Li.
He Jing has long hair, her braid nearly reaching her waist.
Xia Li is small and has two cute dimples when she smiles.
He Jing is making her bed, across from Ye Xiaoxiao's.
Ye Xiaoxiao was just about to find something to do when the dorm door opened again.
A middle-aged couple came in with a girl.
"Oh no... there’s only one top bunk left. What are we gonna do?"
