Chapter 100: The Business of Making Money
by 一盞紅爐Chapter 100: The Business of Making Money
The other girls in the dorm didn’t blame Li Meiru for the incident either. She’d been having a string of bad luck lately.
The others didn’t want to add more pressure on her and pretended like nothing had happened.
Once Ye Xiaoxiao finished packing up her stuff, she asked, “You guys heading to the cafeteria?”
Xia Li climbed down from the top bunk, “Yeah, yeah, I’m starving.”
She had originally planned to put her books back and then go eat, but who knew our dorm would get robbed.
Being mad and cleaning up at the same time was tiring, and her stomach had been growling for ages.
Tang Xiuxiu also put down what she was holding, “Let’s go together; we can clean up later.”
He Jing said, “I’ve already added up what we lost. You guys can check later if we missed anything.”
Wang Jiao walked over and glanced at it, “They got off cheap.”
He Jing smiled, “Once we add up all this stuff, they’ll have to pay quite a bit. It’ll teach them a lesson.”
Wang Jiao said discontentedly, “Jia Shengnan’s family is loaded, otherwise he wouldn’t be so cocky at school.”
She had initially thought he was a good person, but after seeing his true colors, she knew to stay away from him.
He Jing said, “But we can’t rip them off either. If word gets out, what’ll people think of our dorm?”
Wang Jiao pouted, reluctantly agreeing with He Jing’s point.
After a bit of chit-chat, they all headed to the cafeteria.
On the way, Xia Li suddenly said, “National Day’s coming up, so we’ll probably get a break. You guys wanna go to the square for the flag-raising?”
Wang Jiao wasn’t very interested, “We can go anytime, but it’s way too packed on National Day.”
Xia Li said, “We’re too busy during the week. Anyway, I’m going. Anyone want to join me?”
Ye Xiaoxiao shook her head, “I might have something else to do.”
She had to go study with Song Guangjing during the holiday.
Tang Xiuxiu also said, “I need to go home.”
He Jing said, “I can go with you.”
Xia Li clapped her hands, “Then it’s a plan. Meiru, you free then? Come with us.”
Li Meiru nodded and agreed.
After grabbing food at the cafeteria, He Jing returned to the dorm, took the loss list, and went to the neighboring dorm to demand compensation.
Tang Xiuxiu and Ye Xiaoxiao accompanied her.
Knocking on the door of Room 208, He Jing handed the bill to the dorm leader.
“Alright, hand over the money, and we’ll hand over the goods.”
It was the first time He Jing had been so upfront.
The dorm monitor of Room 208 turned pale and was flustered after reading the bill.
Even excluding Ye Xiaoxiao's watch, the compensation amount on the bill was over sixty yuan.
That was more than an ordinary worker's monthly salary.
"You're being unreasonable. Even if we bought everything in your dorm, it wouldn't cost this much."
Tang Xiuxiu: "Wang Jiao's dress alone costs seven or eight yuan. Do you still think this is too much? If you didn't want to pay, you shouldn't have gone too far in the first place."
Students passing by in the hallway kept looking back at the commotion.
Today's incident had caused quite a stir, and many students were gossiping about it.
The dorm monitor of Room 208 didn't dare to speak loudly and went back into the dorm, where some arguments could be heard.
Eventually, the dorm monitor came out with the money.
"Here, we're even."
The attitude was quite unpleasant.
Ye Xiaoxiao and the others didn't care about the attitude. After counting the money, they left.
After returning to the dorm, He Jing distributed the money to everyone based on their previous losses.
Not everyone in the dorm was well-off, so this money helped ease some people's financial burdens.
Additionally, the school's monthly welfare stipend for college students had also been issued.
Each person received a monthly subsidy of twenty-three yuan, and students with special needs or outstanding achievements could apply for additional grants and scholarships.
However, the latter could only be applied for after the mid-term exams.
At that time, scholarships would be awarded based on grades.
Students from financially struggling families could apply for financial aid.
Xia Li counted her money: "With this, I'm going to have a big meal outside."
He Jing didn't agree, "It's better to save the money. I'm fine with eating in the cafeteria."
Most people stopped asking for money from their families after receiving this, and some, like He Jing and Li Meiru, even sent some of it back home.
Ye Xiaoxiao realized she hadn't checked in on her family for a while, so she wrote a letter home and sent a hundred yuan.
She wondered how her third brother's business was doing and when he would return home in triumph.
After leaving Bai Shi Village, it was hard for Ye Xiaoxiao to keep up with the plot developments.
But money was still crucial, and it was too important.
When Ye Xiaoxiao went to class on Thursday, the school's notice about Room 208 had already been posted.
Even students from the Traditional Chinese Medicine class had caught wind of it.
Zhang Kaining asked Ye Xiaoxiao: "So it was a conflict with your dorm. Did you lose anything?"
Ye Xiaoxiao: "No, I didn’t get the short end of the stick."
Zhang Kaining breathed a sigh of relief and then brought up another topic, "Xiao Xiao, I’ve got a money-making idea. You in?"
Ye Xiaoxiao raised an eyebrow, "Money-making?"
Chu Yunxiao turned around to remind, "Don’t rope Ye Xiaoxiao into your shady scheme."
Zhang Kaining disagreed, "I’ve got good intentions. This money-making idea could help everyone. How is that dragging anyone into it?"
Ye Xiaoxiao tried to calm Zhang Kaining down, "First, tell me how to make money."
Zhang Kaining coughed, "Let’s set up a stall and sell some herbal patches."
Ye Xiaoxiao couldn't help but laugh.
Zhang Kaining: "Don’t knock my patches. They’re my family’s secret recipe—great for treating rheumatism and arthritis!
There are also ones that help wound healing and treat scar hyperplasia. Different formulas, all with the same amazing results."
Ye Xiaoxiao propped her chin on her hand, "I can make patches too. First, let me see your family’s herbal patches and see what’s so special about them."
Zhang Kaining took out a few black patches from his bag.
"Take them and give them a shot. They’ll work in just one use."
Ye Xiaoxiao sniffed the patches and recognized a few herbs, but couldn’t pick up on the rest.
"So, you want me to help you run a stall?"
Zhang Kaining shook his head, "Not exactly. The patches are great, but here’s the catch: the ingredients are pricey, so they’re not cheap.
Even if we set up a stall, we’d need some upfront cash."
Ye Xiaoxiao’s eyes darted around thoughtfully.
Chu Yunxiao had likely been pitched before, but he didn’t bite and was now warning Ye Xiaoxiao to be careful.
Zhang Kaining waved him off, "Get outta here, we’re all classmates. I’m not going anywhere, so why worry about me scamming anyone?"
Zhang Kaining didn’t tell everyone—he was targeting students from well-off families who could cough up the cash.
Like Ye Xiaoxiao, who always dressed well, clearly not short of money, otherwise he wouldn't have brought it up.
"How much are you charging for these patches, and what’s the cost?"
~Geez. I wonder why? 🤔
