Chapter 484: Teacher Kong's Baby is Here!

The Lu family parents had mentioned visiting the island, but their packed schedules kept delaying the trip until the end of the month.

By then, the island had gotten quite warm.

Since they hadn't given prior notice, Ye Xiaoxiao didn't know their exact arrival time and thus hadn't prepared anything ahead of time.

Coincidentally, on the day the Lu family parents arrived, their neighbor Kong Xuelan went into labor unexpectedly.

Kong Xuelan had always been physically frail, and on the day she went into labor, Deputy Regimental Commander Li wasn’t home—only her mother was around to help. Both were somewhat flustered.

It was Ye Xiaoxiao who heard the commotion and, along with Auntie Zhao, helped get her to the clinic.

Ye Xiaoxiao and Auntie Zhao waited outside the delivery room.

Auntie Zhao tried to send Xiao Xiao home first. "Xiao Xiao, why don’t you head back? You’re due in three months—you shouldn't be around for this."

Since it was Xiao Xiao’s first pregnancy, Auntie Zhao worried endlessly, fussing over her all day long.

Ye Xiaoxiao sat on a chair. "I’m not that timid. Besides, I’ve seen worse in surgery."

As a doctor who had performed surgeries, Ye Xiaoxiao was accustomed to such situations and didn’t feel nervous or afraid.

Auntie Zhao, being older and a bit superstitious, insisted, "Still, you should keep your distance. You shouldn't risk being exposed to this."

Luckily, Kong Xuelan’s mother wasn’t nearby—otherwise, such remarks might have upset her.

Ye Xiaoxiao said, "Auntie Zhao, could you go make some chicken soup for me? Teacher Kong can have some when she wakes up too."

Though Auntie Zhao might sound harsh, she had a soft heart. "Then come back with me."

Considering the medical clinic had plenty of doctors and Kong Xuelan’s delivery was going smoothly without complications, Ye Xiaoxiao stood up and left with Auntie Zhao.

Just as they reached the clinic entrance, they saw Lu Xingzhou and Yun Chengxiu coming their way.

"Mr. and Mrs. Lu are here!" Auntie Zhao recognized them first.

Not only Lu Xingzhou and Yun Chengxiu but also their security detail were present.

From a distance, it looked like a whole group. Yun Chengxiu hurried over when she saw Xiao Xiao.

"Our Xiao Xiao seems to have gotten thinner."

Parents always think their kids aren't eating enough.

Though Ye Xiaoxiao’s belly had grown noticeably, she could still get around just fine.

"Mom, I really haven’t lost weight. Auntie Zhao looks after me really well."

Ye Xiaoxiao added, "Maybe my face looks slimmer because my belly’s bigger now."

"You’ve been through a lot, Xiao Xiao. Your belly seems bigger than it was in May or June."

Seeing Xiao Xiao brought back Yun Chengxiu's own pregnancy memories—it was never easy.

Ye Xiaoxiao shook her head, not wanting the whole group to stay out here. "Mom, Dad, let’s get you home first."

Yun Chengxiu looked into the courtyard and asked, "This is the clinic. What brings you here?"

Ye Xiaoxiao replied, "My neighbor’s sister is in labor."

Yun Chengxiu widened her eyes. "What a coincidence—do you need any help?"

Yun Chengxiu had come to the island this time mainly to check out the living conditions. She hoped to take Xiao Xiao back to the capital if conditions allowed.

If there were any risks during childbirth on the island, it might be too late to find a hospital.

Ye Xiaoxiao said, "Everything’s under control. Aunt Zhao and I are heading back to make some chicken soup and bring it over later."

Yun Chengxiu still glanced worriedly into the courtyard before saying, "Let’s head home first, then."

"Does Lu Hanchuan know you're here?"

Yun Chengxiu waved it off. "It's fine. He’s irrelevant—we’re not even here for him."

That was definitely classic mom talk, but Xiao Xiao still felt she should inform Lu Hanchuan. Besides, Deputy Regimental Commander Li also needed to be notified—his wife was in labor.

Aunt Zhao said, "Sir, Ma’am, you go ahead back. I’ll swing by the guard post to inform them."

Since it was nearby, Aunt Zhao wouldn’t take long.

So Ye Xiaoxiao led her in-laws home first—it was their first time on the island.

When they saw the small courtyard at Xiao Xiao’s home, they admired the cozy setup.

    "You even raise chickens here?"

Ye Xiaoxiao nodded. "Yes, but they’ve stopped laying regularly. Might as well cook them now."

Yun Chengxiu laughed. "We can get new chicks next spring."

Talk about a short life for those chickens.

Ye Xiaoxiao invited everyone inside. The house was bright and clean, with an electric fan placed in the living room—though no need for it yet in this weather.

Lu Xingzhou thought the environment was decent. He’d toughed it out through worse in the army when he was young.

But Yun Chengxiu didn’t share the sentiment. "Won’t this place bake in a few days? Even if it does, you shouldn’t use the fan for too long—it’s not good for your health."

Facing her elders’ concerns, Ye Xiaoxiao replied obediently, "No worries, Mom. The island’s climate is quite mild. Even in July and August, it’s only hot for a short while at noon. Nights are breezy and cool."

Yun Chengxiu grew even more concerned. "Don’t you dare sleep with the windows open at night in your room."

Can’t have it all, so Ye Xiaoxiao quickly changed the subject. "Mom, Dad, and everyone else, please have a seat. Let me put on some tea."

Yun Chengxiu immediately said, "Xiao Xiao, I’ll tag along to the kitchen and see what you have at home."

Lu Xingzhou, however, said, "Let’s all sit for a while. No need—we’re fine."

Tea was non-negotiable hospitality, and Ye Xiaoxiao wouldn’t skip it.

Besides, it was blazing outside, and after the long walk, everyone surely needed some water.

The others stood up to help, but Ye Xiaoxiao insisted they stay seated while she and her mother-in-law went to the kitchen to prepare the tea.

Yun Chengxiu also took a look around the kitchen—it was spotless and fully stocked.

"Mom, you should stay for dinner at home later. My third brother, Ye Changning, brought over so much food that we can't finish it all, plus there are some things sent from home..."

Ye Changning not only brought over a ton of food but also brought a refrigerator, worried that the ingredients might spoil.

Although power outages sometimes occur, with the development of military-industrial projects on the island, the power grid here has become reliable. Even if there is an outage, it’s quickly restored.

Yun Chengxiu remarked, "We're pretty well set up here, but the medical conditions on the island worry me greatly. Xiao Xiao, why don’t you come back to Beijing with us this time? It would be easier for you to take care of yourself during pregnancy."

Hearing her mother-in-law say this, Ye Xiaoxiao felt touched, but island responsibilities weren't so easy to leave behind just yet.

Mainly, Ye Xiaoxiao knew her own body well and was confident she would have a safe delivery, so there was no need to leave.

Ye Xiaoxiao also explained her thoughts to Yun Chengxiu.

"Mom, I know you mean well, but there are still many things to handle on the island right now. Besides, my pregnancy is going perfectly normal—there’s definitely no problem. Please don’t worry too much."

With Ye Xiaoxiao insisting, Yun Chengxiu could only say, "Alright then. When it’s time for you to give birth, we’ll return to the island."

Ye Xiaoxiao was deeply moved that her elders respected her wishes.

Ye Xiaoxiao and Yun Chengxiu brewed tea together and brought it out. Within minutes, Auntie Zhao and Lu Hanchuan returned.

"Did Deputy Regimental Commander Li go to the clinic?"

Lu Hanchuan replied to Ye Xiaoxiao first, "He’s already there."

Then he greeted his parents and the others.

Kong Xuelan’s delivery was difficult, but fortunately, it all worked out okay in the end.

At one in the afternoon, she finally gave birth to the baby.
