Chapter 490: Happiness Is Being Together as a Family
by 一盞紅爐Chapter 490 Happiness Is Being Together as a Family
Once the babies were born, they were first handed to the father before being handed to others.
It was Lu Hanchuan's first time holding such tiny infants, and his arms were stiff, nervous. As he cradled them, he couldn't help but ask, "How’s Xiao Xiao doing?"
"Everything’s fine. Dr. Ye and the babies are both doing well," replied the nurse from the sanatorium, who was very familiar with Xiao Xiao.
"We’ll bundle up the babies and take them to the room first. The mother will be wheeled out shortly and moved to her room."
Only after hearing that Xiao Xiao was safe did the others turn their attention to the babies.
Miao Cuifang, overjoyed and teary-eyed, wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes before reaching out to take one of the babies.
"Which one’s the big brother, and which is the little sister?"
"The boy’s the older one, the girl’s the younger," the nurse answered with a bright smile. It was her first time seeing newborn twins, and she was thrilled.
Since Xiao Xiao hadn't been brought out yet, everyone focused on the babies. At the nurse’s urging, the group split into two—some went to care for the infants while others remained by the operating room door to wait.
The operating room on the island had been specially prepared, and with no other expectant mothers present, there was no chance of mixing up the babies.
Moreover, this was a military compound—no place for kidnappers to even try.
Lu Hanchuan told the older folks to get some rest, saying he’d wait by himself.
Eventually, Miao Cuifang, Yun Chengxiu, and the others went to look after the babies, while Ye Changsheng and Su Tong stayed with Lu Hanchuan to wait for Xiao Xiao.
After entering the operating room, Ye Xiaoxiao was given anesthesia and didn’t wake up until half an hour later.
The first person she saw upon opening her eyes was Lu Hanchuan.
"Xiao Xiao, you've worked hard."
Lu Hanchuan held one of her hands, his eyes soft with worry.
Dazed from the meds, Xiao Xiao blinked slowly.
"It really was exhausting..."
She slurred this reply, then drifted back into sleep almost immediately.
When she woke again, it was the smell of food that roused her.
This time, as her eyes opened, she saw the pair of little bundles in the crib beside her bed.
To be honest, newborns just a day old were still a little wrinkled, not exactly showing off their parents’ looks yet.
"They’re a little funny-looking..."
The moment Ye Xiaoxiao said this, Miao Cuifang leaned in. "All newborns look like this. They'll be much prettier in a couple of days."
She then brought over a bowl of chicken soup that had been simmering for a while. "Try to eat a little, but Dr. Qiao said you can only have a small amount."
Lying there, Ye Xiaoxiao took a few sips.
Miao Cuifang was still talking to Xiao Xiao, "Your daughter and son have already had two meals."
Ye Xiaoxiao: "They're on formula?"
Miao Cuifang: "Yes, otherwise, you’d still be asleep."
Ye Xiaoxiao hadn’t planned to breastfeed anyway—formula was better—that way, the kids wouldn’t cling to her too much.
Raising kids was a marathon, and Xiao Xiao couldn’t stay home full-time with the kids. Formula was good for both the kids and the parents.
Ye Xiaoxiao had a little soup but didn’t finish it, turning her attention to the two babies.
Though they were still a little scrunched up, the sight of those two tiny bundles lying there softened her heart.
Ye Xiaoxiao stayed at the hospital for three days before moving back home on the fourth day.
Being home was way better than the makeshift hospital room.
After three days, Xiao Xiao noticed the two little ones getting cuter every day.
Both the brother and sister had thick eyebrows, big eyes, and long, curled lashes—their big, dark eyes—like little grapes—melted everyone’s hearts.
Ye Xiaoxiao and Lu Hanchuan named the children together.
The boy was named Lu Shijin, and the girl Lu Shiwei.
Right now, the two munchkins just ate and slept all day, and Ye Xiaoxiao started her long stretch of postpartum rest.
The island weather was perfect—not too hot, not too cold—just right for recovery.
Due to business matters, Ye Changning had left the day after the birth, and Qiao Yunhu also asked to head off the island after Ye Xiaoxiao returned home.
Yun Chengxiu stayed to care for Xiao Xiao for over ten days but couldn’t stay for her whole month of recovery due to work commitments.
Ye Xiaoxiao understood her mother-in-law’s situation and told her not to worry and go back to Beijing.
"We’ll definitely throw a full-month party for the kids, and then Grandma and Grandpa can come see them."
Ye Xiaoxiao had already discussed it with Lu Hanchuan, "The island’s a long way from Beijing, and the babies will still be too young for a full-month banquet, so we won’t hold one. Mom and Dad are busy with work—no need to go out of your way. We’ll reunite when we have time."
Hearing this, Yun Chengxiu agreed,
"That’s fine too. Xiao Xiao, just focus on resting up. Let Aunt Zhao and Xiao Chuan handle the kids. If you need more help, we can arrange for a nanny from Beijing to assist."
Ye Xiaoxiao quickly declined—we’ve got plenty of help already. "Mom, don’t worry, we’ll definitely take good care of the kids and ourselves."
Yun Chengxiu went over everything carefully before she left, also having a long talk with Miao Cuifang before her departure.
She felt bad about not staying longer to care for Xiao Xiao during her postpartum recovery.
Miao Cuifang thought it was perfectly normal—Lu Hanchuan’s parents had formal jobs, and it was really nice of them to stay as long as they did.
Though Yun Chengxiu left early, she had prepared gifts for both babies and Xiao Xiao, along with a fat red envelope for Xiao Xiao.
Ye Changsheng, who had summer vacation, left once the new semester began, along with Su Tong.
Before leaving, Su Tong gave each twin a pair of bracelets she had designed herself, set with a few gemstones.
Ye Xiaoxiao looked at them enviously, and Su Tong pulled out another pair from her bag, handing them to Xiao Xiao. "Relax, you think I’d forget you?"
Moved, Ye Xiaoxiao hugged Su Tong, saying, "Please visit me more often."
Su Tong replied, "I definitely will."
After Ye Changsheng and Su Tong left, Miao Cuifang only then realized, "I think your fourth brother and that girl seem pretty close."
Ye Xiaoxiao was eating her postpartum meal and feigned ignorance, asking, "Which girl?"
Miao Cuifang said, "Your good friend, Su Tong."
Though she said this, Miao Cuifang wasn't entirely sure—she just had a hunch.
Xiao Xiao didn’t reveal the truth to Miao Cuifang either, as such matters are better left to the people involved to share themselves.
"Then why didn’t you ask Fourth Brother?"
Miao Cuifang replied, "It's a bit awkward, and with so much going on these days, I haven’t really had time to think about it."
Ye Xiaoxiao said, "I think you could call Fourth Brother and ask. What if they are?"
Miao Cuifang nodded, "You’re right. I’ll ask him in a couple of days."
If it really was her son’s girlfriend, she’d be overjoyed.
After giving her reminder, Ye Xiaoxiao settled back into bed, mission accomplished.
Eating eight meals a day was pure bliss.
...
After the children were born, time flew by. By the time Ye Xiaoxiao finished her month-long recovery period, she had gained at least ten pounds.
Once her recovery period ended, she began juggling childcare, weight loss, and work.
The ten months of pregnancy had felt like the longest ten months, but after the babies were born, time went into fast-forward—each day passing quickly yet filled with new experiences.
By the time Xiao Xiao had fully recovered, Rende Hall also began transferring patients to the island again.
Some people specifically asked to see Ye Xiaoxiao, willing to wait months just to see her.
Even though no full-month celebration was held, Ye Xiaoxiao received continuous blessings and gifts from many people after giving birth.
She treasured all these heartfelt gestures, holding them as beautiful memories she would forever cherish.
