    Chapter 471 The Lovable Grandfather

Yun Pohuai saw Lu Hanchuan and the two approaching, took a few steps forward, and gave Lu Hanchuan a hug.

It was clear that Lu Hanchuan was surprised, even a bit awkward about it.

    "Are you really Yun Pohuai?"

Lu Hanchuan and his cousin had always had a frenemy relationship—since when were they ever this chummy?

Meanwhile, Yun Pohuai had thought he might mellow out after marriage, but he was still just as insufferable as before.

But since they had come all this way, as the host, he really shouldn’t start bickering.

Yun Pohuai was overthinking it—he had never won an argument in his life, so it wasn’t even a proper quarrel, just him getting verbally wrecked.

When they were kids, he could at least rough him up, but as Lu Hanchuan grew older, he couldn’t even do that anymore.

Yun Pohuai was done with Lu Hanchuan—he shouldn’t have hugged him in the first place.

The weather outside was cold, so Yun Pohuai turned and invited Ye Xiaoxiao inside.

"Come in, Xiao Xiao. Make yourself at home."

Though Yun Pohuai had only met Xiao Xiao once—on the wedding day when she was all done up—he had been struck by her as a very beautiful bride.

Ye Xiaoxiao called him "brother" and entered the house with Lu Hanchuan.

The Yun family’s courtyard was enormous, a European-style villa with its own garden, situated in one of the most expensive areas of Jinhai.

Once inside, Lu Hanchuan also dropped the teasing act.

    "How’s Grandpa’s health?"

Yun Pohuai shook his head. "He’s old now—his mind comes and goes. Sometimes he’s sharp as a tack, other times foggy. These days, he wouldn't stop asking for you, so we called you."

Otherwise, Lu Hanchuan would still be on base, and the Yun family wouldn’t have asked him to make the trip so casually.

Lu Hanchuan knew that his grandfather was advanced in age and bound to face various issues, but it still hit him hard.

His grandfather had spoiled him rotten as a child—would the old man even know him this time?

Just last time they met, he'd been clear-headed, but now he was suddenly confused.

Ye Xiaoxiao and Lu Hanchuan entered the house first, and naturally, staff took care of their belongings.

Lu Hanchuan urged Xiao Xiao to take a breather while he went to see his grandfather.

    "Let me come with you."

Ye Xiaoxiao squeezed Lu Hanchuan’s hand. Though they had come by car, she felt fine.

More than resting, she wanted to go see his grandfather together.

Lu Hanchuan nodded. "Alright, let’s go together."

Lu Hanchuan’s grandfather was already in his seventies, but his white hair remained luxuriant.

The old man kept himself neat and didn’t appear sick at all.

When he saw Lu Hanchuan, his mind was still clear and he immediately recognized his grandson.

"Hanchuan's here, come let Grandpa see you."

Grandpa waved and even stood up on his own.

His attendant quickly rose as well, reaching out to support him.

But the old man waved them off. "Don't fuss over me, I can still walk just fine."

Lu Hanchuan hurried over to steady his grandfather. "Grandpa, sit down and let's talk."

After helping the old man get seated, Lu Hanchuan took Xiao Xiao's hand and introduced her. "Grandpa, this is Xiao Xiao, my bride."

Ye Xiaoxiao stepped forward and greeted, "Grandpa."

The old man shifted his gaze from Lu Hanchuan and finally noticed Xiao Xiao.

"This is my grandson's wife, I remember..." The old man was sharp as a tack at the moment, not a bit confused. "Xiao Xiao, come here to Grandpa, I have a red envelope for you."

Though the old man hadn't attended the wedding, he had sent Yun Pohuai with a generous gift, so he'd been plenty generous.

Now, as the old man insisted on giving another red envelope, Xiao Xiao thought he might be joking.

But the old man truly pulled a red envelope from his desk drawer and tucked it into Xiao Xiao's hands.

Standing nearby, Lu Hanchuan teased, "Grandpa, why don't you give me one?"

The old man gave Lu Hanchuan an adorable glare. "What do you want money for? It's all for the wife."

His words made everyone in the room laugh.

Holding the red envelope, Ye Xiaoxiao thanked him sweetly, "Thank you, Grandpa."

Having given the red envelope, the old man seemed to have accomplished something significant.

"Stay here with me, and you'll get a red envelope every day," the old man said proudly, chin raised.

Lu Hanchuan: "Grandpa is so generous, but with nothing coming my way, I won't stay."

The old man made like he was going to swat Lu Hanchuan, but when his hand landed, it was just a light pat.

Lu Hanchuan knew his grandfather would never really hit him—so he kept teasing.

Xiao Xiao had already suspected the old man might have early-stage Alzheimer's, but seeing his speech and demeanor now, she realized it was very mild and wasn't interfering with his life.

This disease would progressively worsen over time. While acupuncture and Chinese medicine could help manage it, the extent of improvement depended on the patient's physical condition.

Since they were already here, Xiao Xiao took the opportunity to give Grandpa a checkup.

Aside from the Alzheimer's, he was otherwise healthy. Of course, he couldn’t compare to younger people, but for his age, he was doing well.

Xiao Xiao also discussed the old man’s condition with Lu Hanchuan.

At his advanced age, harsh treatments wouldn’t do. Good food and company would be the best approach.

Lu Hanchuan: "It is what it is."

The two visited with Grandpa a while longer before Yun Pohuai came to tell them that their room was ready, so they went to settle in.

The old man was still reluctant. "Xiao Chuan came to see me."

Yun Pohuai could only coax him, "Yes, yes, Xiao Chuan came to see you, but let Xiao Chuan and Xiao Xiao rest first. We’ll all have dinner together later."

Yun Pohuai knew about Ye Xiaoxiao’s pregnancy. Since they came all this way, they had to be taken care of properly.

Lu Hanchuan and Ye Xiaoxiao went to the guest room.

Though it was called a guest room, it was practically Lu Hanchuan’s own space, as he always stayed there during visits. It even had many of his belongings inside.

Once in the room, Lu Hanchuan hugged Xiao Xiao. "Want to take a nap?"

Ye Xiaoxiao shook her head. "No, I’m not tired."

"I was really worried about Granddad, but seeing him in good spirits now is a relief. We’ll deal with the future when it comes."

Every elder faces this day eventually. What family can do is provide more companionship and care.

Ye Xiaoxiao hugged him back reassuringly.

After resting in the room, it was almost time for dinner.

Only Lu Hanchuan’s eldest uncle was missing; everyone else was there.

His aunt, his cousin’s wife, and their little nephew were all seated downstairs.

Lu Hanchuan’s aunt, who’d been out earlier, had just returned—a woman with a gentle air about her.

Ye Xiaoxiao followed Lu Hanchuan’s lead and called her "Auntie."

"No need to stand on ceremony—we’re family. Xiaoxiao, how many months along are you? Did the trip bother you at all?"

Being a woman herself, the aunt was more attentive and focused on Ye Xiaoxiao.

Ye Xiaoxiao, touched by her kindness, answered warmly.

His cousin’s wife then ushered everyone to the table.

"Let’s catch up over dinner. It’s been ages since Xiao Chuan’s last visit."
