Chapter 445: The Typhoon Is Coming

Ye Xiaoxiao was unaware of the conversation between Deputy Regimental Commander Li and his husband.

Tomorrow, Ye Changyuan was leaving, and Ye Xiaoxiao was packing his things.

She didn’t have much to send with him—just some of her own herbal pills and snacks for the journey.

"This ointment is really effective, especially for bruises and sprains."

    "Sure, I’ll take it then."

Ye Changyuan asked Xiao Xiao not to pack too much for him, as she and her husband had just arrived on the island and they were still settling in.

"It’s fine. When I can, I’ll ask my master to send more."

After packing for Ye Changyuan, Ye Xiaoxiao told him to get some rest early since he had to take the boat the next day.

Passenger ships didn’t come every day, so Ye Changyuan would leave as soon as one arrived tomorrow.

Back in their room, Ye Xiaoxiao collapsed into Lu Hanchuan’s arms.

    "What’s wrong?"

Lu Hanchuan pulled his delicate wife closer.

    "I miss home."

    Xiao Xiao murmured petulantly.

In the past, when she said she missed home, it might’ve been about her past life’s home.

But this time, Ye Xiaoxiao was certain—she was missing her family back in Baishi Village.

As long as she was with the Ye family, she felt like she didn’t have to worry about a thing. It might sound childish for an adult to say, but Xiao Xiao truly longed for those days.

Lu Hanchuan pulled her closer. "I hate seeing you unhappy on the island either. If you want, you can go back?"

He had no ulterior motives—he just wanted his wife to be happy. He leaned closer, comforting her.

"But then I’d miss you too much." Ye Xiaoxiao was just talking; leaving was out of the question.

It was just the brief reunion with her family that left her feeling a little lost.

Instead of teasing her for being greedy, Lu Hanchuan planted a kiss on her forehead.

"Then we’ll make sure to go home soon."

    "Okay."

The next morning, Ye Xiaoxiao didn’t make breakfast.

She and Ye Changyuan headed to the mess hall for breakfast.

After the meal, she accompanied him to the harbor to send him off.

"Go back now, don’t stand here in the sea breeze."

Ye Changyuan waved goodbye to Xiao Xiao before boarding the ship.

"Come visit again next time you're free!" Ye Xiaoxiao called out loudly.

    "Will do!"

After boarding the ship, Ye Changyuan bumped into someone he knew.

    "Teacher Xu?"

Though they'd only met once, Ye Changyuan remembered her.

"It's you." Xu Li naturally hadn't forgotten Ye Changyuan either.

    He was exceptionally good-looking.

And his complexion was fairer than most on the island.

Xu Li: "Are you leaving the island now?"

    Ye Changyuan nodded.

    "Yes, and you, Teacher Xu..."

Xu Li: "I'm going home. My father has been urging me recently."

During their conversation, they discovered Xu Li was returning to the same city as Ye Changyuan's destination.

This worked out well—they’d have company on the journey, especially since they'd need to take other transportation after disembarking.

A young girl like Xu Li shouldn’t travel alone—it wasn’t safe. Since Ye Changyuan knew her, traveling together was perfect.

    ...

Back on the island, after saying goodbye to Ye Changyuan, Ye Xiaoxiao packed her things and checked in at the medical clinic.

The clinic had three doctors and two nurses, all military medics.

As a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, the clinic head didn’t give her set responsibilities, only saying she could pitch in when things got busy.

Ye Xiaoxiao went along with it, spending her free time reading and working on her thesis.

Everyone at the clinic was married and seemed more mature, so there were fewer petty disputes.

Curious, Ye Xiaoxiao asked, "Do you have to be married to work here?"

A colleague, Sister Yang, chuckled. "What young woman would choose to come here? The island’s unfamiliar, and there’s no one to turn to if something goes wrong."

"The assignments are handled thoughtfully. They give priority to military spouses with relevant skills, so couples come to the island together."

Ye Xiaoxiao saw the logic in it.

The clinic job paid a salary and included benefits like vouchers.

They got 20 yuan worth of meal tickets each month, which covered all their meals.

Leftover tickets couldn’t be cashed out.

Ye Xiaoxiao wasn’t bothered. At least the job kept her busy, so she wouldn’t overthink things at home.

Most cases at the clinic were just colds, fevers, scrapes, and sprains.

Once Ye Xiaoxiao got to know everyone, she also understood their skill levels.

The clinic director, in his forties, specialized in surgery and actually performed surgeries.

Dr. Yang worked in internal medicine and typically worked the longest hours.

There was also a male doctor, Xiao Wang, who excelled in orthopedics.

The two nurses, one male and one female, were experts at IVs and wound care.

With Ye Xiaoxiao joining, some cases they couldn't handle before at the clinic could now be attempted.

Her acupuncture skills also showed that some minor ailments could indeed be alleviated with just a few needles.

Even the clinic director personally tried it and got relief for his long-standing rheumatism.

"Ugh... My legs have been hurting badly lately. Must mean a storm's coming. You all should prepare when you get home."

Ye Xiaoxiao put away her acupuncture supplies.

"Really? I should go home and listen to the weather broadcast."

Dr. Yang added, "It's true. I heard a typhoon might be approaching."

Having never experienced a typhoon on the island before, Ye Xiaoxiao said, "Then I should get extra groceries at home."

The clinic director shook his head. "You young people always focus on food. Go check if your doors and windows need reinforcing. Otherwise, you'll be stuck inside while rain pours in."

He had a point, so Ye Xiaoxiao inspected her doors and windows when she got home.

She then loaded up burlap sacks with dirt from the yard and placed them by the door to sandbag against flooding during heavy rain.

The chickens in the yard would also have to be rounded up into the woodshed to prevent them from flying around in the storm.

Ye Xiaoxiao was thorough—she even reinforced the doors and windows with a hammer and wooden planks.

When Lu Hanchuan returned home, he saw the sacks piled in the yard.

"Wife, what are all these sacks for?"

Ye Xiaoxiao was boarding up the windows. "I'm taking precautions."

    Her tone was quite serious.

Lu Hanchuan had also received a weather alert. "A typhoon is indeed approaching, though it could still veer off course."

"High winds scare me. I can handle rain, but not gales."

Lu Hanchuan took the hammer from her. "Let me see how well you've done... Or better yet, leave it to me."

"Hauling all this dirt in the heat—aren’t you exhausted?"

Ye Xiaoxiao: "Not at all. Just used dirt from the garden."

Lu Hanchuan looked and saw that she'd picked all the vegetables in the garden.

If the typhoon didn’t come after all, Xiao Xiao might be disappointed.

    He voiced his concern.

Ye Xiaoxiao: "I won’t be. Those vegetables were already ripe. I’ll replant after the storm."

Hearing this, Lu Hanchuan was reassured.
